First of all I would like to thank "The Almighty".
I am glad to introduce myself – I am Sridevi Tharanidharan., M.Sc., M.Phil.,(Computer
Science) Lecturer, Department of Information Systems, Community College for Girls,
King Khalid University.
After completion of my under graduation, I started my career as a Lecturer from the
year 2000 onwards. I worked in many colleges at India. Also I worked in university at
Africa.
So far I used only traditional method of teaching. After my ten years of experience,
now only I started online teaching technology through Blackboard. For this online
teaching strategy I should be grateful to the E-learning Deanship and the Team as
well as E- Learning Specialists especially Ms. Salma Attaf. E-Learning Supervisor
Ms. Nouf Dhahwaan.
Also I should be thankful to the Moderators from those whom I attended the Online
training about Black board, online activities, Quality Matters etc.,
There are many advantages in an online learning compare to traditional environment.
E-learning = Electronic Learning. Also I can say "Effective Learning"
Learning process will get complete only after utilizing the modern Technology. E-
Learning is a healthy learning environment !.
Students are able to communicate locally as well as globally by using Electronic
Learning.
E-learning creates new chances for learning in cyberspace anywhere, anytime using
the latest technology. It overcomes the limitation of geographical boundaries. It mean
that I can communicate with my students from anywhere and at any time.
The e-learning system via Blackboard contributes to a flexible educational medium
using up-to-date teaching tasks and techniques online .
E-learning offers a multi-model environment for learning not easily available in
traditional modes of learning.
E-Learning provides – easy access of various information sources.
E-Learning brings good relationship or rapport between students and Teachers.
Developing students' personalities, and promoting their attitudes towards learning.
Enabling free expression of opinion.
E-learning has also helped in providing opportunities for students to become
responsible for their self learning.
E-learning effectively encourage self-learning, self-achievement and
ultimately Self Confidence.
Necessary assistance has been provided with the help of support team by the
E-Learning Deanship.
Students can refer the materials of the specified course by using YouTube,
downloading files from Internet.
Different types of material are now available in different forms: audio, video,
or even printed.
Students can utilize many sources not only the Teachers as in Traditional
method.
Time Saving - by conducting electronic tests, which helps in saving time due
to the auto correcting facility available in Black board. After started my
blended course, I had conducted 2 electronic tests.
Collaborative learning is possible in Discussions Boards.
Each student feels his individual responsibility for his own learning because e-
learning fosters greater student/instructor personal and collective contact by
using emails, forums and early-warning systems.
How can you help students succeed and meet course goals?
Naturally I motivate all the students to utilize Black board to learn and gain more
knowledge. I used to tell the students regarding online education through cyberspace.
If the students are fit to acquire knowledge about Black board, then they can do any
online course in cyberspace.
Before the students Log in to the Black board, teachers has to plan earlier and utilize
the options available in Blackboard properly. Also it should be much easier so that
students can navigate without anyone's aid and can meet their goals very easily.
Before beginning Online Activities through Black board, I used to teach the students
in traditional class room about Black Board.(For Example, How to open the course
materials, assignments and how to submit the assignments etc.,).
On getting the statistical report from the students, also by observing the students in
traditional classrooms, Students are much fascinated by online environment. They
feel online is more informative. Even the student who is dull in traditional
environment, performed excellent in online environment.
According to my online teaching, :
Working with Black board, I used to create an interactive course content so
that students can search the contents through Internet even before my
particular lecture.
I Post the course material as handouts for every chapter or unit wise after my
every lecture.
I feel enjoy when I use Announcement. Because whatever I want to convey
the students, I can do through Announcement. Even if I forget to inform
something in the traditional classroom.
I also used the Blackboard for assigning homework and receiving assignments
from students and correcting or evaluating these assignments through the
grades centre available on the Blackboard.
I created numerous quizzes and posted with due date. Also the students
practiced well and performed well in Electronic Exam. Previous year I had
conducted 2 E-Exam (E-Test ) for two different semesters.
I instruct the students to participate in online discussions and submit online
assignments, which was restricted with a deadline. I also recorded lectures and
provided websites for the students.
Using Tegrity, a Blackboard facility, helped in solving those problems. I was
able to record my lectures at home using programs such PowerPoint and
media player to present the material.
I recorded few Lectures on Tegrity classes which was so effective.
I would like to state that tegrity class is more beneficial to the students as I
got the statistical report from the students to whom I taught Eluminate Live.
Due to network problem sometimes, students feel inconvenience in Eluminate
Live. But in Tegrity Class, whenever the students need to listen the Lecture,
they can.
Also I enjoy Eluminate Live as there is an Interaction between the participants
and moderator. While giving Lecture, students can immediately ask any
doubts. Provided that the Moderator has to give privilege to the particular
participant. So many interesting tools available in Eluminate Live.
Both Tegrity and Eluminate Live contributed to solve problems faced by the
working people due Availability of lectures at any time anywhere. Instead of
attending to the traditional classrooms.
I used many other activities like pool, Adaptive Release, Early warning systems,
Glossary, Slide Shows,Youtube etc.,
Setting Early Warning makes the students more alert. Sometimes without early
warning, even the good student may miss the marks.
Early warning is very good activity for the students in order not to miss the marks.
I will try to implement what I learnt in my online training.
Finally, I would like to say that Online education is a boon to all, especially for
students. The students has to utilize this fascinating technology and they has to shine
well in future. E-learning has become a necessity in teaching. We cannot imagine a
university in the near future without e-learning..
Online teaching is not an easy deal. To get success in online teaching, everyone
should work efficiently with continuous effort.
Surely stated that every one's wealth is "Education". So everyone should utilize it
in an proper and efficient manner.
