FIRE AND EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN

Building: H: Floor 1



Primary Emergency Coordinator (PEC): Public Safety, x6666

Secondary Emergency Coordinator (SEC): Public Safety, x6666



The Evacuation Role of the PEC

The PEC shall make a full sweep of the area depicted in the “Emergency Evacuation Map” (the Map) in

order to ensure that all of the occupants have evacuated the building and that all of the doors along the

corridors are closed. Then proceed to the prearranged Emergency Evacuation Area located outside as

shown on the Map.

Evacuation Role of the Secondary Emergency Coordinator (SEC)

The SEC will perform the duties of the PEC when the PEC is unavailable.

Otherwise, the SEC will assist the PEC during the evacuation process.

Evacuation Role of Public Safety Personnel

Public Safety Personnel shall sustain the duties of the Emergency Coordinators described in the Evacuation

Role of the PEC when the Emergency Coordinators are unavailable.

Evacuation Responsibilities of the Building Occupants

Immediately evacuate the building when the fire alarm sounds and safely proceed to the Emergency

Evacuation Site as described in the Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plans in Section B.1 & 2 below.

Failure to comply is a violation of the NJ Fire Law; F-704.5 Evacuations.

Always know at least 2 ways out from the area that you occupy at any given time.



I. The Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plan for Building H, Floor 1

A. Emergency Egress or Escape Routes

Refer to the Map provided with this plan.

B. Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plan

All Fire/Emergency Evacuations shall be COMPLETE unless notified otherwise by the

Incident Commander.

COMPLETE means that ALL occupants shall vacate the building immediately upon the

sounding of the fire alarm or via any other emergency communications that are approved

by Ramapo College.

1. Primary Evacuation Routes

a. All occupants shall evacuate the building utilizing the egress paths to the Exits

indicated on the “ Fire and Emergency Evacuation Map” (the Map).

b. After exiting the building, proceed down the respective walkway to the

designated Emergency Evacuation Site located as shown on the Map.

2. Secondary Evacuation Route

a. It is the responsibility of each individual to be aware of your surroundings and to

learn at least two ways out of each area that one may occupy at any given time.

Please refer to the "Emergency Evacuation Map for at least two Exit Ways from

this location.

b. If for some reason occupants can not exit through the front of the building,

occupants should exit through the rear of the building.

c. Once outside, then the Emergency Coordinator shall notify Public Safety that

occupants are unable to use the Primary Evacuation Route to reach the

designated Emergency Evacuation Site at. .





C. Procedures for Employees who shall remain to Operate Critical Equipment

1. All of the other non emergency responders and occupants are required to

evacuate the building upon the activation and sounding of the fire alarm.

D. Procedures for Accounting for Employees and Occupants (Occupants) after the

Evacuation has been completed

After it appears that all of the occupants have evacuated the building and are assembled

at the designated Emergency Evacuation Site, an accounting by the PEC, of the persons

at the designated Emergency Evacuation Site, will take place at that time. Public Safety

will immediately be notified of any persons identified as unaccounted for.

E. Identification and Assignment of Personnel Responsible for Rescue and

Emergency Medical Aid

1. The Ramapo College Department of Public Safety and the Township of

Mahwah Police and Fire Departments shall be the first responders to provide

rescue personnel for emergencies on Campus.

2. The Ramapo College EMS and the Township of Mahwah First Aid Squad

shall be the first responders to provide medical aid for emergencies on

Campus.

Please note that the Ramapo College EMS only operates during the regular academic

semester; usually consisting of the months from September of the current year and

through the end of May of the following year.

F. The Preferred and any Alternate Means of Notifying Occupants of a Fire or

Emergency

1. The preferred means of notifying occupants of a fire or emergency is the Fire

Alarm Control Panel (F.A.C.P.) and the ancillary notification devices

including audio and visual horn strobes, bells, alarms and fire detection

devices with sounder bases

2. The alternate means of notifying occupants of fire or emergency are but

shall not limited to:

a. Emergency Coordinators

b. Public Safety Personnel

c. Alert Me Now – A text message and phone notification system

d. The internal and external College websites

G. The Preferred and any Alternate Means of Reporting Fires and other Emergencies

to the Fire Department or Designated Emergency Response Organization

1. The preferred method of notifying the fire department of a fire or other

emergency is via a dedicated telephone line (the Red Phone) to the

Township of Mahwah Police Dispatch Desk. This Red Phone is location in

the College’s Public Safety Headquarters. Fire Alarms, pre-alarms and

trouble alarms are transmitted via dedicated phone/communication lines to

Ramapo College’s Proprietary Fire Alarm Monitoring Station located in the

College’s Public Safety Headquarters.

2. The alternate means of reporting fires or other emergencies to the fire

department or designated emergency response organization are via phone

to Campus Public Safety at 6666 or 201.684.6666, by telephone to 9 911, or

direct dial to the Township of Mahwah Police Dispatch at 201.529.1000.

Note: Gina Mayer-Costa, the College’s Director of Environmental Health & Safety and

Dennis Harrington, the Fire Marshall for the College each have direct contact with the

Township of Mahwah Fire Department, Emergency Medical and Emergency Management

via hand held radios.

H. Identification and assignment of personnel who can be contacted for further

information or explanation of duties under the plan

Accordingly, the following personnel are designated:

1. Department of Public Safety Personnel at 6666 or 201.684.6666

2. Gina Mayer-Costa, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at 7531 or

201.684.7531 or Cell 551.804.2244

3. Dennis Harrington, Ramapo College Fire Marshal at 6252 or 201.684.6252

or Cell 551.804.2265

I. A Description of the Emergency Voice/Alarm Communication System Alert Tone

and Preprogram-med Voice Messages, for H, Floor 1

The Fire Alarm System does not have any of these capabilities.

J. The Emergency Evacuation Plan for People with Disabilities

1. People with disabilities should proceed to the nearest available Exit as

indicated on the “E Wing 1st Floor Fire and Emergency Evacuation Map”

(the Map)..

K. Communication to employees and Occupants in the H Building, Floor 1

The pro-active communications that take place prior to emergencies include:

1. Annual Training Classes for all Employees as prescribed by the new NJ Fire

Code effective 02/01/09.

2. The availability of this Emergency Evacuation Plan and the H Building, Floor

1, Fire and Emergency Evacuation Map.”

3. The PEC or Fire Marshal will update the current and inform any new Faculty

and Staff in the H Building, Floor 1 about any changes to the Fire and

Emergency Evacuation Plan as they occur.

The Evacuation Role of the PEC
