The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -3-
Introduction
Can you make everyone like you, when it
comes to doing business with you?
Perhaps not, but you can take away every
reason for them disliking you.
Everyone has their detractors and everyone
has different opinions, likes and dislikes. I met
a life coach recently, who said it was their
mission in life "to be loved by everyone." I
thought how ironic, how selfish, how
disappointed they were going to be.
Wouldn't you think?
I could almost understand "to love everyone",
by accepting their faults etc, but the more I
thought of Mr. Life Coach, the more I thought,
"Blimey you've got it the wrong way round
mate".
POINT 1 - SELFISH MARKETING
In my book he was breaking the #1 principle of
marketing by committing "selfish marketing".
Quite often when people want more business
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -4-
or need more business, they can come across
as selfish, needy even desperate on occasion.
They end up focussing all their attention on
themselves (not the prospect), and crikey Mr.
Life Coach spoke for about 10 minutes not
asking a single question about me. Hey that's
fine, but crikey, as a 2 way communication
device he was stuck on transmit. He needed to
start taking an interest in others, instead of
focussing on himself.
With the “7 Spiritual truths of Marketing”, you
will discover it’s all about focussing on what
other people want – and what it is you already
have that you can offer them.
POINT 2 - IT'S ABOUT GIVING, NOT
RECEIVING
He said he wanted to be loved. He wanted the
attention, he wanted to "receive" it not give it.
He never actually said what he was giving in
exchange, or giving from the outset. He never
actually said what he was offering, giving or
doing in advance of receiving the praise, love
and admiration he wanted. "I am the best" he
Said. (OK that may sound good as some self
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -5-
talk as he stands naked in front of a full length
mirror, shaving body hair off parts of his body,
but hey, I'm not convinced…..yet). I still wasn't
71% convinced that he knew what problems,
pains, and frustrations he was fixing for clients.
In fact, in our total conversation he never
mentioned a single problem that he actually
fixes or helps clients with. It was very loose -
"achieve success".
With the “7 Spiritual truths of Marketing”, you
will discover it’s all about giving, not receiving
to help you create the abundance you long for.
POINT 3 - SELF RESPECT IS WORTH MORE
THAN POPULARITY
I could understand that if you are nice, polite
and considerate to others in your own dealings
with them, they might not like you, but it
would be impossible for them to "dislike" you. I
am also of the opinion, that the real pay back
in life comes from the end of the second mile,
not the first and it helps to focus your attention
on the other person, not yourself.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -6-
The value for yourself (and others) I think
comes from influencing others to be more
productive, more fulfilled, even more happier,
by rendering good service and delivering on
your promises. Self Respect means far more to
me than popularity.
Don't get me wrong, I liked him; I think I do,
but will "everyone"? - I'm not so sure. The
word "marmite" comes to mind, which I'm sure
can be said of a lot of people (myself included.)
but I think its those that do more and give
more, will receive more and not the other way
around. As you go about your business,
you will discover that the world is full of
cynical, pragmatic, mistrusting people who
don't suffer fools gladly, for many people will
mistrust your motives, until they are convinced
of your consistent and sustained positive
actions and your sincerity in your offers of
assistance in the service you provide.
With the “7 Spiritual truths of Marketing”, you
will discover a greater, deeper understanding
of the universal principles that will guarantee
your progress and future marketing success.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -7-
Many people won’t do business with you until
they know, like and trust you. And that’s my
first port of call on this journey of helping you
to take your marketing to a whole new level.
You need to start having both a deeper and
wider perspective of all things marketing, and
it starts with the term – “Know, Like & Trust”.
Reading the following is one thing, but if
it resonates with you, strikes a chord,
makes sense, or "feels" right, then
perhaps it really is time for you to start
experiencing some major marketing
breakthroughs of your own.
Know / Knowing
Are you busy trying all sorts of weird and
wonderful marketing tactics, strategies such
as networking, SEO, blogging, even attending
workshops or exhibitions in an attempt to get
"Known" for what you do and what you have
to offer. The problem for many is that when
there is a problem with their life, business or
marketing - they just don't know what it is
or why. No matter what they try, it just
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -8-
doesn't seem to work. Their sales pipeline is
non existent. They're not getting the traffic to
their website. People are not paying them the
amount they want for their daily rate. The list
goes on. Quite often they are having more
arguments with loved ones, and quite often
about money. (That elusive commodity many
use to wrongly decide whether they are in a
prosperity consciousness or a poverty
consciousness.)
Is something not working with your
marketing and do you KNOW what it is?
Quite often we are simply dealing with the
symptoms, or effects of bad, poor or selfish
marketing, instead of identifying the root
cause, and addressing the marketing issues,
challenges, and obstacles that hold us back
and are preventing us from achieving the
results we want. I had an accountant chap
who came to me for marketing advice, who
said he was unsure why his marketing wasn't
working. Now the funny thing about
accountants (and most service based
professionals) is that many of them think
selling or marketing is beneath them.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing -9-
They tend to treat marketing consultants or
sales executives with the contempt they think
they deserve. Their thoughts of an accountant
performing marketing or selling their wares
conjour up images of second hand car sales
men, direct insurance types or snake oil
salesmen.
Many service based professionals view
the art of selling or marketing as
something beneath them, or a waste of
their invaluable time and superior
intellect. Its more common than you think,
across many fields and disciplines - the actor
who wont go to auditions, the out of job chief
executive wont go to interviews, the athlete
who wont train or practice, and the business
professionals who won't sell, are all being
held back by one thing - their ego.
Their ego is controlling their life, their
decisions, and quite often prohibiting them
from seeing the wood for the trees. They
simply don't "KNOW" why things aren't
working, and that's why a simple marketing
audit is very powerful, for it allows the
individual to recognise the situation they are
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 10 -
really in, and allows them to take control of
their situation. David completed my FREE 3
minute marketing audit, and discovered 29
separate marketing issues, challenges and
obstacles that were holding him back and
preventing him from achieving the results he
wanted. What astounded him, was that he
was completely unaware of 24 of those
issues or factors - He simply didn't know
how much "resistance" he was facing or
why, but he did now.
When we identify the resistance in our life or
business, and are able to address or eliminate
the root causes, it permits an incredible new
flow of energy to be released. This new flow of
energy can manifest itself in a "eureka"
moment or an "aha" moment, or several of
them. You begin to trust your intuition or
gut instincts better, some amazing
revelations appear before you, and you
have a greater sense of "knowing" what
you should be doing and why. Identifying the
issues, challenges and obstacles that are
holding you back and preventing you from
manifesting the results you want, can often
result in much needed clarity, and some cases
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 11 -
this can also result in a real "aha" moment
when the individual begins to realise, they
haven't been on the right path, doing the right
things or doing what they want to do, they've
been doing certain things in certain ways just
to survive financially. With fire in your belly
and a new lease of life, you will want to fire up
your levels of desire and set new objectives.
All of a sudden, for many people, a marketing
audit can help them to realise they haven't
been in their "flow" for an extended period of
time, and that they have been focussing on all
the wrong things. For many they begin to
sense a bigger picture, or vision what it is they
really want to be, do or have. They begin to
experience a sense of knowing, a sense of
purpose and that they themselves must
change in order to change their circumstances
for the better. That sense of knowing can
often be interpreted that they feel they
have something much greater to offer, as
part of a bigger picture.
Alas, for many, stuck in the daily treadmill of
life, who don't take time to do a marketing
audit, they don't experience that new inspired,
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 12 -
fired up feeling of enthusiasm, belief and hope
for the future, or how they can contribute in
their small way to the much bigger picture or
recognise the phenomenal amounts of
opportunities that exist now, in real time
in their reality. (Opportunities that enable
them to shine, and excel at what they offer
the world.) They remain trapped by their ego,
oblivious to the real issues that are causing
them to remain trapped in their poverty
consciousness. They have no sense of
Knowing who they really are, what to do, or
why they're "here".
Like
Many professional service providers often have
worked for many years in corporate life,
they're often very technically minded, very
analytical, and often have a very strong
academic background. They are often from a
middle management background, used to
having their leads provided for them, a full
expense account, and many never having
been held accountable, being allowed to
"coast" throughout their career.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 13 -
They simply don't like to be challenged or
be held accountable, and dare I say it -
they like to have an easy life. Quite often
their values are completely different from that
of their customers and prospects, and quite
often they don't actually know what it is their
prospects and clients really like, or more
importantly - want.
Because many professional service
providers don't like "marketing", they
often have had no formal training or
education in sales or marketing. Many
don't know simple things like the Life Time
Value of a customer, Cost per sale, cost per
lead or which low cost or no cost offline and
online tactics they could use to generate
leads, enquiries, referrals and sales.
Many are simply ignorant of such matters,
because marketing is one of those things that
they haven't "liked" up until now and it gets
worse.
The feeling of not liking marketing can
often be reflected in the way they market
themselves on appointments at
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 14 -
networking events, and becomes
apparent via their lack of enthusiasm,
and passion for what they offer.
That lack of enthusiasm is not only picked up
and interpreted by potential prospects and
partners, it is magnified by the fact that they
actually need more business, and could be
now making them come across as "needy,
desperate or skint" and putting prospects
off. (And they wonder why it’s not working )
They need to like what it is they do, they need
to love what it is they offer, and they need to
ooze enthusiasm and passion for what it is
they have. If they don't, then no amount of
money is going to make them happy. They
need to like themselves, and be comfortable
and happy doing what they want to do. If
they're doing what they have to for financial
reasons, then perhaps it is time for them to
read the "7 spiritual truths of marketing"
or at the very least conduct their own
marketing audit or situation analysis.
Quite often, when we don't like something or
someone, it's down to perception or our own
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 15 -
set of values, for we have a bad habit of
comparing people, situations, and events on a
most frequent basis. In "truth No. 7" we talk
about how people tend to walk into our lives
and business regularly, and many of them
have a definite purpose or message for us.
However, for many potential prospects,
partners or associates we come across in our
daily prospecting or marketing they can act as
a mirror and we have a tendency to mistrust
or simply not to like them.
The reason for this is like a mirror they reflect
the opposite of us, and what they are
subconsciously telling us is that we need to
change, for we can identify something in
them that we don't like, which is more often
than not, a weakness in our own skill set or
behaviour set that we know we lack. In other
words, people we can often come across in
business can unwittingly or unknowingly
amplify our failings and weaknesses without
them having to say a word, and we don't like
it.
Here are a few examples of what I mean
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 16 -
• An accountant hates public speakers
• A consultant hates marketing consultants
• An IFA hates graphic designers
• A life coach hates sales people
• A salesman who hates accountants
I'm sure you get the idea. When we don't like
someone, it's perhaps the universe telling us
that there's actually something in ourselves
we don't like, and that something may be the
key to unlocking some major breakthroughs in
our life or business, as we may be lacking a
particular skill or behaviour. A quick way to fix
this is training, and the acquisition of new
skills and knowledge to fill those gaps.
Trust
Ah this is an interesting one. Prospects are
often mistrusting towards potential suppliers
for they may never have heard of them
before, or simply lack confidence in some way.
Stop and think. Maybe, just maybe trust isn't
there because there's something they don't
like about the supplier. Maybe just maybe, the
supplier does something that reminds the
buyer of something they don't do or perhaps
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 17 -
need. Perhaps the buyer is reminded of a
weakness they have by the supplier, and they
don't like it - and that's the real reason why
they are being "mistrusting".
We can often be mistrusting towards
others when we don't understand why
certain people behave in a certain way
and we question their motives or
"intention". Once we understand the
intention behind someone's actions everything
becomes a lot clearer, but quite often we
simply don't give people the opportunity or we
don't take enough time to try and understand
them, what they offer or what they're trying to
achieve. More importantly, how can we
help them to achieve what they want, and
help ourselves at the same time?
Sometimes it's not about taking someone's
word or about trusting them, perhaps its all
about you, finding the real you, and what it is
you really want and can give to others.
Perhaps its about knowing and trusting
yourself to do what you want to do, and
recognise what you need to do, or
perhaps you need to have more faith and
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 18 -
belief in your own knowledge, skills and
solutions you have in order for people to
trust you. Maybe the problem is inside of
you - not them. We don't like looking in the
ugly mirror, and sometimes potential suppliers
can scare us or un-nerve us, for we know that
they speak the "truth" when they tell us how
big a problem is or how much it will cost to fix
it. We sometimes, don't like hearing the truth.
Sometimes we need to hear the truth from
someone who has a fresh perspective on a
problem or situation. Sometimes we need to
listen to the person that can look in
objectively with clarity and explain the true
reality of that situation. Again, it's perhaps the
universe trying to tell us that it's time for a
change. Sometimes we need to trust our
intuition, and simply just "know" that it's time
to make a decision to work with others, and
prepare for the breakthroughs we need in
order to take our game to the next level.
Confidence is associated with trust. If you are
lacking confidence or have a low self esteem
because business has been slow this past
while, your credit cards are at their limits, and
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 19 -
your life partner appears to be picking fights
about money, then perhaps you need to
start trusting the universe, and recognise
the lessons it's throwing at you. Perhaps,
just maybe, you haven't taken a step back to
objectively reflect on the journey you've been
on, and where you are on that journey, but
more importantly, where you want to get to,
Perhaps, you’re ready to start knowing, liking,
and trusting your self and your instincts.
AND REMEMBER, IT'S NOT ABOUT TAKING MY
WORD FOR IT - OR TRUSTING ME...IT'S ABOUT
FINDING THE REAL YOU, AND WHAT YOU REALLY
WANT......IT'S ABOUT KNOWING AND TRUSTING
YOURSELF & WHAT YOU HAVE TO GIVE
When it comes to marketing, people are always
obsessed about the "money".
If they need the sales or they want the sales,
then they need or want the "money". They
may even take the conscious step in creating a
plan, but then wonder how they will resource
the plan. They need or want the "money" to
resource the plan.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 20 -
Some would argue that there's never enough
money in the world to compensate for a lack of
fulfilment in what one does. Without a heart
filled with a joy for life, even spending that
which you make or earn becomes "joyless".
With a lack of sales, a lack of pipeline, a lack of
"cash" in your bank account comes a poverty
consciousness...
(...The mindset that people tend to adopt when
things don't go according to plan or simply
aren't going well. )
It's often borne out of a fear of lack and denial
of self worth. Many people remain in a poverty
consciousness by the belief that individuals
tend to be lazy and refuse to work unless they
are made to by the fear of being poor.
Many therefore stay in jobs they don't like; and
are unable to show their true creative talents;
for years. For those working for themselves or
in business by themselves, this can often come
across in their marketing; in their voice, their
handshake, their writing.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 21 -
They can often come across as needy,
desperate, and “skint” in the minds of
prospects, and thus prospects reading the
subconscious signals, consciously decide not to
do business with them.
Others continue to do jobs that they hate in
the belief that this is what they must do in
order to survive financially, but actually
continue to remain in a poverty consciousness,
both in their minds, and the minds of people
close to them. The truth is, the opposite is
true. For once we recognise what we
enjoy, and what we excel at and become
aligned with our life's purpose, we tend to
work all the hours of the day as an
outward expression of who we really are
and because our expectations are not
totally focussed on money or financial
matters, and when we detach ourselves from
the financial rewards, and money begins to
flow much easier.
Money is simply an exchange of energy. Yes, it
can be a piece of paper, a coin or an electronic
transfer with no actual value on itself.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 22 -
Paper based money would probably end up
worthless if we didn't all agree the value. Did
you know it only costs 3p to make a £5 note?
In a phone call to the Bank of England they
also confirmed it costs 3p to make a £20 note
and a £50 note, but we place a value of £50 on
that £50 note. We all know how the banks
have artificially increased their "value" by
billions of £££ in recent years too. When
money is transferred electronically it is a pure
energy transfer, there was no shipment of
physical cash in a GPS tracked Securicor Van
from one bank to another, no briefcase
containing precious gems or stones handcuffed
to the wrist of a well dressed gentleman
wearing Top Gun sunglasses.
No, you simply traded a certain amount of your
own energy (service to others) in exchange for
money (more energy) which ultimately, will be
exchanged for other goods and services (more
energy.)
Many people value themselves in what they
have, and how much money they have in the
bank. One way to look at it I suppose, but try
and value yourself by what you give to others.
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 23 -
Think of the energy exchange you give to
others in the service you provide. Many people
feel abundant, deserving even "flush" when
they have a lot of money, and they quite
rightly spend it, some even waste it or
squander it, but when they have no money,
many feel more inferior, weaker or
maintain a lower self esteem, and their
creative output is much lower.
We get pleasure (short term energy gains)
from the things we receive (one-upmanship,
sex, alcohol/drugs, fame etc), but we
get/create longer lasting happiness for
ourselves from the things we give, and that
includes service of that which we enjoy giving.
If you're feeling abundant on occasion, give to
charity. If you are in a position to give, then
that must mean you already have. If you
already have, then you are re-enforcing the
prosperity consciousness. The amounts can
vary yes, but the principle remains the same.
I remember watching a chap begging outside
Euston Station, everyone was walking past. All
the commuters trapped in jobs they hated,
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 24 -
were making the daily commute to maintain
their own poverty consciousness, yet they
looked down their nose at the chap who was
perhaps actually experiencing (even "trapped")
in the exact same mental state as them.
Me, I was a visitor to the city, I appeared to be
in the role of an observer as I watched the
hundreds of people on the tube – no one
speaking or smiling, faces stuck in books, all
glum unhappy people (probably having had to
get up at 06.00 for a 09.30 start). No-one
appeared happy, just half asleep - or maybe I
should say, half awake.
Treat money with respect and gratitude,
acknowledge the energy that went into
creating that which you receive, but more
importantly start respecting, and valuing what
you have to offer too.
If what you offer and provide is less than
the cost of the problem you can fix, then
think of the impact and the true value of
what it is you really have to offer. More
importantly, start adopting a prosperity
consciousness and start doing what you want
to do, not what you have to do, and watch the
The 7 Spiritual Truths of Marketing - 25 -
returns starting to become commensurate in
direct proportion to the level of energy you put
into giving selflessly.
My father once said, "You won't always find the
job that you want, but you'll always find the
job that you need.” I replied, "I don't want a
J.O.B. (to be just over broke), I want a life, I
want to do, what I want to do, and do it well,
not just be told what I must do.”
I love working with people, not for people.
I also have a funny feeling that if you’re
reading this book, then you probably think like
that too. I wish you well on your journey, for if
you read, and apply the "7 spiritual truths
of marketing" I promise, it will take you and
your business to a whole new “level”, literally.
