Etching Journeyman Requirements and Privileges
The next skill level above Apprentice is that of Journeyman status. To achieve Journeyman status
students must etch a PCB to be used as a functional MAGE system Headband V2.5. Students may also
opt to etch a PCB of similar complexity to that of the Headband. If students choose to etch a board
different than the Headband they must get their design approved by the TA before etching. The
Ultiboard and Multisim file for this board can be found in the Milling training documents located on
Sharepoint.
Journeyman requirements:
1. Etch a PCB for Headband V2.5
a. The board must contain zero broken traces.
b. Traces and pads must have smooth edges.
c. Traces and pads must maintain their specified dimensions. Over etched boards will not
be acceptable.
d. Front and back of PCB must be properly aligned.
e. Board may not contain “copper islands,” spots of unused copper that were not
completely dissolved during the etching process.
f. Boards must be thoroughly cleaned once completed.
Journeyman privileges:
1. Key to etching closet.
2. Ability to etch without the need for a TA to be present.
Like all skill levels, students with Journeyman status are expected to maintain a professional work
environment. This means actively maintaining/promoting a safe work environment, cleaning up the
etching closet once done, and informing TAs of any problems with equipment or supplies (Low chemical
levels, low quantity of gloves, broken equipment, etc.).
