Hi! My name is Mariah Jones and I am the 2011 T2D2
intern at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, located in Blue
Springs, Missouri. I did not know what to expect since I
was the first student to intern at this site but I had a great
time and learned a lot about teaching and wildlife
conservation. I recommend this internship to anyone who
is interested in pursuing a career in education and wildlife
conservation or biological sciences. In the beginning, my
daily tasks were simple as I figured out how things worked at Burr Oaks. As I learned more and
gained the trust of my managers, my job duties became more involved. My major job duties
included:
Observing and assisting with programs for students aged 3 to 18, including those with
special needs
Preparing lots of crafts for the programs
Interacting with the public
Working in a team
Going to various locations for events such as Blue Springs Marina and the State Fair in
Sedalia, MO.
Helping with planning programs
Working with animals and being outside for long periods of time
Again, being a team player is crucial to having a great experience at Burr Oaks. I felt like I was a
part of a big family and the staff and volunteers are very welcoming and work well together.
The staff and volunteers really care about teaching kids about the natural wonders around
them. Anyone who interns here will have a great summer!
