EMERGENCY PLANS
Advance planning for emergencies and disasters is essential to provide for the safety of students and staff.
The superintendent will develop and maintain plans that meet the requirements of state law for
preparedness in case of fire, civil emergencies, and natural disasters.
Building principals will meet all requirements for conducting emergency drills to give students practice in
moving with orderly dispatch to designated areas under emergency conditions, and the staff practice in
carrying out their assigned responsibilities for building evacuation and/or lockdown.
It will be the responsibility of the superintendent to see that appropriate staff members are kept informed
of current state and local emergency requirements and to work in partnership with fire, police and
emergency management personnel.
EVACUATION DRILLS
The Superintendent shall insure that the staff and students in each school are trained to evacuate the
premises rapidly and safely in case of emergency. Students in all schools shall be advised of the fire
evacuation drill procedures, which shall be held eight to ten times per school year with intervals not to
exceed eight weeks during the school year. Students shall take part in a fire drill within the three days
following the start of school.
EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN DRILLS
The Superintendent shall insure that the staff and students in each school are trained to lock down the
premises rapidly and safely in case of emergency. Drills shall be held a minimum of two (2) times per
year during the school year, once in the fall and once in the spring, according to City of Melrose Safety
Building Control procedures.
