					ESXi 4.1 BASIC iSCSI Boot From SAN Installation Procedure
QLE4062 Advanced adapter settings for CHAP and Jumbo frames is not covered in this document.

Preliminary Steps:

Refer to QLogic BIOS Readme file for the Fast!UTIL configuration settings.

     A. Install the iSCSI HBA in the server.
     B. On the SAN Storage, create a single volume that will be designated as the ESXi boot volume.
        From the Vendor’s Storage GUI, Map this volume to the IP address of the Qlogic iSCSI HBA.
     C. From Fast Util, configure an IPv4 Initiator IP address and subnet mask for the HBA port. Ensure
        this IP address is on the same subnet as the IP address of the SAN storage the HBA will connect
        to.
     D. Connect the HBA to the iSCSI network

Configure the QLE406x iSCSI Adapter for Boot from SAN.


1.   Reboot Server and Enter FAST Util by hitting Control Q at the Qlogic splash screen: The following
     Fast! Util main menu will appear:

                                            Fast! UTIL Options

                                          Configuration Settings
                                          Scan iSCSI Devices
                                          iSCSI Disk Utility
                                          Ping Utility
                                          Loopback Test
                                          Reinit Adapter
                                          Exit Fast! UTIL

2. From the Main menu, Select:

iSCSI Disk Utility:

The following is a representation of what should be seen for a detected volume:

Press F1 to display complete iSCSI name


3. Hit escape to go back to the main menu.

4. From the main menu, Select: Configuration Settings:

5. Then select: iSCSI Boot Settings


The following screen will be presented:
                                           iSCSI Boot Settings

Boot Device           Lun   Target IP                    iSCSI Name

Primary:              0     172.1.1.1               iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8
Alternate:            0

Press F1 to display complete iSCSI name of boot device

6. Enter the IP address of the target if none is detected or Select the Primary device of the detected
   target example 172.1.1.1, and hit return. This will scan and provide a list of volumes that are
   detected: In the below example a single target/lun is present:

7. Hit enter to select the desired volume which will populate as the primary boot device:

9. Select: Adapter Boot Mode = Manual
10. Select: Primary Boot Device Settings to check that the correct volume is selected as the
    boot volume.

11. Hit escape and save changes.



Boot from SAN Installation of ESXi 4.1x

12. Put the ESXi Installation CD/DVD disk in the CD ROM of the server.

13. Reboot The server.


14. When the system begins to boot you will see a Qlogic Splash screen which will indicate
    ROM Bios is Enabled and it will show you the boot volume of the SAN storage device that
    was selected in the prior steps: See example below:

ROM Bios is ENABLED

15. The ESXi information from the ESXi Installation CD/DVD will be copied into RAM, and the
   ESXi installation will begin.

16. The system will prompt you to select the SAN boot disk to write the ESXi boot ISO to as the
   ESXi Installation progresses.

17. An on screen status of what ESXi files are installing will be displayed. The ESXi
   Installation CD/DVD will eject when the files are copied to the SAN and you will be
   prompted to Reboot the system .

18. Remove the CD/DVD and reboot the system.

19. ESXi will boot from the external SAN device.
