A Creative Mind Turns to Watercolor
Sam Robins, a resident of The Shores, always had an artistic eye.
Throughout his career as a designer, he focused his creativity on
primarily fashion-oriented endeavors but also designed houses and
gardens. A former resident of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Mr. Robins
opened Outdoor Traders stores in Essex, Greenwich and Litchfield.
He describes Outdoor Traders as being similar to Orvis. “I really en-
joyed owning these stores,” he said. “I met so many people and had
lots of interesting experiences.”
The site of the future Peconic
Landing was across Long Island
Sound from Mr. Robin’s Old
Lyme home. He was also
familiar with the East End

When he turned 70, Mr. Robins began exploring a new means of artistic expression –
painting. His subject matter is usually water, boats and the sky. He alternates between
periods of painting and stretches of time when he is soaking in inspiration. “After a period of
relaxation, I find that my painting is always better than before,” he said. “When I’m inspired, Some of Mr. Robins’ cards are

Mr. Robins’ watercolors have been featured in gallery exhibits, and he’s sold several paintings.
His watercolor greeting cards are currently for sale at The Market in Peconic Landing’s new Town Square.
