Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team
Date: 08-July-2010
This is a Call-to-Action to recruit users from all industries and from everywhere in the world to bring their
expertise, commitment, and contribution to this new work area.
The information herein gives a general description of the new work area and the Project Team that is
being formed to accomplish the work. For information on how to join this work area, please refer below.
1. Objective/Scope of the Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team
Member Organisations and User Companies have identified strategic AIDC Development and
Deployment issues that need to be addressed by GS1. These issues typically impact tens to
hundreds of millions in industry investment therefore management direction based on business
case development is required prior to consideration of changes in GS1 standards. The initiative
will offer a deliberate plan to address strategic AIDC technology gaps and manage migration from
legacy to newer technologies. Without these strategies, divergences will continue to grow and
future GS1 System growth may be hampered.
This Project Team will provide strategic recommendations to the GS1 Management Board and
General Assembly on where business case, education, standards, or policy enhancements are
needed in order to support a 2020 plan for AIDC. It is the role of GS1 Management to make
decisions on the recommendations coming from this team. This Project Team cannot set official
GS1 Strategy; but will create recommendations that may become the official strategy only after
they have been approved by the Board Committee for Standards (BCS) and then presented to
the Management Board (MB) / General Assembly (GA) for final approval.
If strategic recommendations are accepted which have standards implications, GSMP Work
Requests based on the approved strategies will be submitted and will require Mission Specific
Working Groups within GSMP to resolve the standards level development. This team is not a
GSMP Standards Group, but a GS1 Strategy Team and cannot directly change/create GS1
Standards.
As needed, during the development of the deliverables for the project, there will be outreach to
other teams within GS1 such as: Industry Engagement Team, standing GSMP Standards
Groups, GS1 Healthcare User Group, GS1 Architecture Group, etc.
The specific issues have been prioritized by Focus Groups consisting of Member Organizations,
and leading End Users. In order to create a focused effort, we will organize into three focus
areas / sub-teams to address related topics:
1. AIDC 2020 Planning
a. Strategy: POS Technology Gap (Research): Need for more AIDC data at POS
not met today for all product categories based on printing and scanning / reading
technology
b. Strategy: AIDC 2020 Planning (Research): Need a common understanding
among MOs and industry to what AIDC data and data carriers are used for all
product categories and major applications. The effort will begin by describing the
current state of the standards in 2010 and how it will evolve based on agreed
GS1 strategies and standards by 2014. The effort will conclude by providing
strategic recommendations for 2020 that may or may not result in standards
action.

2. GTIN-14 Business Cases
a. Business Case: GTIN-14 at POS (Sector Divergence): Need to resolve
community disagreement over whether or not the business case for GTIN-14 at
POS exists and if so, when to implement
b. Business Case: GTIN-14 Significance (Sector Divergence): GTIN-14
assignment practices may lead to inconsistent system approaches where
companies play in multiple sectors
3. AIDC Data Carrier Deployment
a. Strategy: GS1 DataBar (Deployment): Inconsistent global implementations
occurring with some MOs/countries implementing and others are not
implementing at all
b. Strategy: GS1 DataMatrix (Deployment): Some countries are not even
informed of the move to GS1 DataMatrix while others are already regulating it on
products scanned at retail pharmacy
2. Scope Constraints of the Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team
The scope of the Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team does include:
Action Plans
Business Cases
Market and Technology Research
Recommendations / Assessments on current / future state of AIDC Technology
Work Requests for GS1 Standards and Policies
The scope of the Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team does not include:
Creating / changing GS1 Standards
Creating / changing GS1 Policy
3. Expertise Required
This is a call for business information and business information technology experts for the
Strategic AIDC Initiatives Project Team. Specifically, industry representatives who have
responsibility within their company for deciding on which type(s) of AIDC related systems are
required to meet their needs. Specific expertise is needed in each sub-team related specifically
to the topics being discussed. Where possible, the experts should represent trading partners from
both sides of the trading relationship, third parties, and solution providers to have proper
representation on the Project Team. The intent is to have balanced membership from the AIDC
user community; therefore, stakeholders from all parts of the supply chain in all sectors are
welcomed to participate.
