Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter 2008-2009
• District Initiative: Develop a Five Year (Game) Plan for Academic Success. Twelfth Quarter Achievement
Game Plan 2008-2009 (Plan, Do, Study, Act) The following eleven plays of the NB Playbook represent the plan
for the 12 Q of Year Three game plan for NBS!
1. Monitor changes in the 08-09 Master Schedule to allow for additional PLC time with Team Leaders, writing
first (3-5) and PM reading workshop. Continue planning the 2009-2010 NBS Master Schedule and Special
      Education Schedules.
2. Continue to analyze grade three-five NJ ASK results, Q11 grade distributions, SRI/DRA/Benchmark results.
Understand the needs of cohorts from grade three to grade five and correlate with DRA, SRI, and Benchmark
results. Work with district rubrics and procedures to establish general education support programs (Reading Lab
      and M&LSP).
3. Continue to work in PLC’s to determine STARS plans for grade levels, individual classes and watch/concern
students. Continue to reinforce QSAC classroom/lesson plan protocols through staff development, observation
and review of weekly lesson plans.
4. Debrief teachers and students on their impressions of the NJ ASK 3-5 Test.
5. Monitor progress of the targeted students (Ten More Students) for increasing the NB Advanced Proficient
Grade Level Indices for grades three and four.
6. Articulate students into the 2009-2010 classes using STARS data.
7. Develop a game plan to analyze essential skills embedded in the Q11 Benchmark Assessments. Ensure
consistent preparation and administration of the Q12 Benchmark while looking ahead to the to the 2009-2010
      school year.
8. Continue the Six Pillars of Character Curriculum and the “Go Green” theme activities. Plan the 2009-2010
      school theme (Go Green Two).
9. Monitor the expansion of the Daily Five/Cafe classroom management plan. Continue staff development for all
grades (k-5) throughout the second semester. Plan for the establishment of D-5 in 3-5 for 2009-2010.
10. Conduct parent/community development on the Twelfth Quarter game plan by May 2009.
11. April through June 2009: On grade lexiles, test preparation lessons, Buckle Down lessons and small group
instruction. Teachers chose content reading materials (novels) for enrichment reading. Lexile time was
increased and one teacher was added to grades three and four.

                                                                                                              3
NB Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter 2008-2009
Reflections on Overall Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter

1. Monitor changes in the 08-09 Master Schedule to allow for additional PLC time with
Team Leaders, writing first (3-5) and PM reading workshop. Continue planning the
2009-2010 NBS Master Schedule and Special Education Schedules. The NB
Achievement Team analyzed the 08-09 Master Schedule and determined it successfully
met the Pequannock District goal of efficiently using instructional time. The World
Language instruction by special teachers allowed us to conduct over forty PLC, grade
level, and general staff meetings dedicated to the NB Five Year Game Plan for success.
Eighteen Team Leader meetings were held with the principal in preparation for these
PLC meetings. The NB Achievement Team will conduct professional development
training for staff in 09-10 on how to maximize PLC meetings using the publication,
Common Language for PLC's (ASAD, NJ PSA, NJ DOE, NJEA, Kean University) as the main
resource. The schedule met the NB Building Goals of “Writing First”? for grades 3-5
and the “D-5 Literacy Block” for grades k-2.
Mrs. Schmitt and Mrs. Vuolo worked with Mr. Cammarata and Ms. McCallister on the
2009-2010 master schedule. They determined the best solution for on-grade level lexile
groups, in order to maximize all possible staff. It appears that staff will be maximized
if lexiles are staggered. The 09-10 Master Schedule will be completed in August.
2. Continue to analyze grade three-five NJ ASK results, Q11 grade distributions,
SRI/DRA/Benchmark results. Understand the needs of cohorts from grade three to
grade five and correlate with DRA, SRI, and Benchmark results. Work with district
rubrics and procedures to establish general education support programs (Reading Lab
and M&LSP). All grade 3-4-5 Language Arts and Math 60/90 Benchmark reports were
updated and distributed to staff for 09-10. The results were distributed on updated
STARS sheets for grades K-5. These sheets were a valuable resource to the learning
community when determining watch and concern lists and action plans. The STARS
sheets correlated the core data for every sub-group of students. The new STARS sheets
for grades K-2 utilized DRA data from our 2008-2009 APPLES project. 4
NB Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter 2008-2009
3. Continue to work in PLC’s to determine STARS plans for grade levels, individual classes and watch/concern
students. Continue to reinforce QSAC classroom/lesson plan protocols through staff development, observation and
      review of weekly lesson plans.
• STARS Plans continued throughout the 12Q with an eye on the 09-10 school year. All teachers are looking
forward to implementing the new Language Arts Curriculum, and receiving the DRA kits for grades 3-5. STARS
results will determine students who can be tested using the DRA in grades 3-5. The 3-5 teachers were happy to
      receive their own Comprehension Toolkit.
• K-2 teachers now have STARS binders. All grade K-5 teachers have received their completed STARS sheets for
08-09, as well as their 09-10 STARS sheets. New STARS binder covers and contents pages were distributed. Mrs.
Schmitt and Mrs. Vuolo were part of the scoring subcommittee for the new grade 2 end-of-year Benchmark test.
The test consisted of reading, writing and math components. They created spreadsheets to record all responses and
create 60/90 reports. Notes for suggestions were recorded by the subcommittee. The correlated data on the
STARS sheets will be a significant resource for K-2 teachers going forward.
4. Debrief teachers and students on their impressions of the NJ ASK 3-5 Test/ Benchmarks.
• All grade 3-5 teachers were given Bench Mark samples in their STARS binders, with answer keys and 60/90
      reports.
• Teachers submitted summaries of their game plans for NJASK.
• Students were surveyed after the NJ ASK (Do More-Do Less) to determine what they thought helped them most.
      The most frequent responses follow:
 Lessons using the writer’s checklist.
            Spicy word lists.
 Test taking tips. (Test Savvy TIPS and “How to Reduce Test Anxiety.”)
            Timed writing practice
 Reviewing scored writing responses from last year’s NJASK.
5. Articulate students into the 2009-2010 classes using STARS data. Articulation meetings were held for all grade
levels. Teachers shared data impressions of their 08-09 students with the 09-10 teachers

                                                                                                                     5
Overall NB Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter 2008-2009
                          Continued
6. Monitor progress of the targeted students (Ten More Students) for increasing the NB
Advanced Proficient Grade Level Indices for grades three and four.
• Much more work needs to be done with this play in the game plan. Teachers leveled
students by ability during Ketchup and Mustard Friday lessons and in their
classrooms during the week. What Three Things? Plans were encouraged for this group
of students but not required. The Team Leaders will help the teachers make a game
plan for these students in 09-10.
• NJASK Data will be added to STARS sheets when scores arrive in the summer of
2009. These scores will be used to adjust the Watch/Concern lists. Teachers already
know who has been flagged as Concerns during the articulation meetings.
7. Develop a game plan to analyze essential skills embedded in the Q11 Benchmark Assessments.
Ensure consistent preparation and administration of the Q12 Benchmark while looking ahead to the
       to the 2009-2010 school year.
• Each grade level team of teachers and the Team Leaders submitted their reflection on the grade
level game plans in Q11. This information was documented in the Q11 Report. This information
will be used as the basis for game planning in Q13 and beyond. (Look Back-Look Ahead).

                                                                                                          6
Overall NB Game Plan for the Twelfth Quarter 2008-2009 Continued
8. Continue the Six Pillars of Character Curriculum and the “Go Green” theme activities. Plan the
2009-2010 school theme (Go Green Two).
• The Character Education Committee continues to meet to make plans for a second year of NBS Goes
Green Theme. The “Dog Ears” reading program will extend through the summer for the Extended
    Year Program.
• The Character Education Committee enrolled NBS in the “ Schools Of Character” (Rutgers). The
community finished year off with donation of 25 lids for town recycling drums purchased from funds
raised by the “Read for Green” program. Mr. Cammarata dressed up like a tree for a day to reward
    the students’ efforts.
9. Monitor the expansion of the Daily Five/Cafe classroom management plan. Continue staff
development for all grades (K-5) throughout the second semester. Plan for the establishment of D-5 in
    3-5 for 2009-2010.
• “Here’s 5 ways to get a head start on implementing the D5 in your classroom next year!” were forwarded to
grade 3-5 teachers inviting them to participate in a “Binder Party” in August of 2009.
Professional Development plans are in place for September and October of 2009.
10. Conduct parent/community development on the Twelfth Quarter game plan by May 2009. Remarks
• NBS H.S.A. Meeting May 26, 2009 the following items were reviewed:
       Game Plan for Q11 and Q12:
       Game Plan Q11 updates.
       Results SRI & Benchmarks for Q11.
       Game Plan for Q12.
 Six Pillars of Character Curriculum.
       Win! Win! Lessons.
11. April through June, 2009: The following items were part of the Q12 game plan:
• On grade lexiles and test preparation lessons.
• Buckle Down lessons and small group instruction.
• Teachers chose content reading materials (novels) for enrichment reading.
• Lexile time was increased and one teacher was added to grades three and four.

                                                                                                                7
Reflections Team Leaders’ Q 12 Game Plan
1. On grade level lexiles incorporated test preparation, content area
reading that coincided with the NJCCCS, high interest topics, and
novels. Mrs. Schmitt was the fourth teacher at grade three. Mrs.
Vuolo was the fourth teacher at grade four. This allowed for
differentiating instruction. The approach was successful, as noted
by the highest lexile scores on record thus far.

2. Due to the NJASK testing requirements, it was decided that grade
2 would differentiate within their classrooms by using D5 and the
CAFÉ during the lexile block. They presented their APPLES
project at the last Board of Education meeting and determined
that this was a successful approach to primary literacy growth.

3. All teachers are looking forward to implementing the new
Language Arts Curriculum, and receiving the DRA kits for
grades 3-5. The 3-5 teachers were happy to receive their own
Comprehension Toolkit. K-2 teachers now have STARS binders.
All grade K-5 teachers have received their completed STARS
sheets for 08-09, as well as their 09-10 STARS sheets. New
STARS binder covers and contents pages were distributed. 8
Reflections Team Leaders’ Q 12 Game Plan

4. Mrs. Schmitt and Mrs. Vuolo were part of the scoring subcommittee
for the new grade 2 end-of-year Benchmark test. The test consisted
of reading, writing and math components. They created
spreadsheets to record all responses and create 60/90 reports. Notes
for suggestions were recorded by the subcommittee.

5. All grade 3-4-5 Language Arts and Math 60/90 Benchmark reports
were updated and distributed to staff for 09-10.

6. Mrs. Schmitt and Mrs. Vuolo worked with Mr. Cammarata and Mrs.
McCallister on the 09-10 Master Schedule. The NB Building Goals
for scheduling included “Writing First”? for grades 3-5 and the “D-5
Literacy Block” for grades k-2. The NBS Master Schedule will be
     completed in August 2009.

    • NJ ASK 3-4 Results Received in the Eighth Quarter: The NBS team reached its achievement goal for the
second year in a row. Grade four students showed significant growth in 2007-08 with a 77.7 aggregate score
in Language Arts and Mathematics(16.4 + 61.3 = grade level index). Grade three’s grade level index was 66.7
(19.4 + 52.5) and the NB school level index was 144.4 (77.7 + 66.7). The school level index exceeded the
target for 07-08 of 136.7 aggregate points by 7.7 points. Grade four science scores improved 25% from 51.5 in
2007 to 64.5 in 2008. A study of the cohorts of students in the Ninth Quarter helped determine the Tenth
         and Eleventh Quarter game plans.
    • The PSK-12 Rankings for the 2006-2007 School Year were released in the Sixth Quarter. North Boulevard's
2005-2006 aggregate language arts/mathematics ranking (school level index) was 417 in the state in the
baseline year of 2005-2006. Our state school level index ranking improved to the 268th place, a gain of 149
places! The NB county ranking in 05-06 was 47th and we improved 15 places to number 32 in 06-07! The
PSK 12 rankings for 2007-2008 showed NB’s growth to 10th place of 81 schools in Morris County. Again a
significant growth of 22 places. The North Boulevard team looks forward to more information on the growth
         in aggregate points in 2007-2008.
                                                                                                                         23
               Achievement Goals, continued
• The Twelfth Quarter achievement goals for NBS focused on the following areas: (1) Planning
the 2009-2010 master schedule with writing first for grades 3-5, a 1-2 literacy block, and a
common reading workshop for grades 1-5; (2) the articulation of students into the 2009-2010
classroom roster; (3) analyzing the Twelfth Quarter Benchmark and SRI tests; (4) and debriefing
the teachers and students on the NJ ASK 3-5.
• The results of the 2-5 Benchmarks, SRI, and DRA assessments were analyzed and shared with the
teachers. The results of the SRI assessment were encouraging. The percent of advanced
proficient students increased from 37% in the Eighth Quarter to 41 % in the Twelfth Quarter. The
106 advanced proficient students represent the highest level of AP achieved by NB students to
date. Improvements in proficiency with continuing decreases in the number of basic and below
basic scoring students continued in the 12Q. Over 91% of all NBS students are achieving at the
advanced or proficient levels of competency.
• Benchmark results continued to be studied in the 12Q. 12Q 3-5 Benchmark results were mixed
when compared to the 8Q results. Benchmark tests were administered with NJ ASK 3-5 protocols
in every classroom to help ensure consistent test conditions and reliable results. Overall Advanced
Proficient 3-5 language arts results in Q12 were flat when compared with Q8. There was a 3%
decline in overall 3-5 math advanced proficiency between Q8 and Q12. Feedback from the
teaching staff indicates the late administration of the Benchmark tests pushed the results lower.
Grade two administered the new benchmark assessment in the 12Q. The class average results for
each subtest follow: Math 88%; Writing (Maximum Score 8) 5.3; Reading 75 %; and Open
Ended (Maximum Score 12) 7. An item analysis (60/90) report was generated and given to all
grade two teachers to help them adjust instruction in 09-10 (Look back-look ahead).
• The kindergarten, grade one and two teachers participated in an APPLES project that
implemented the DRA strategy in all classes. The teachers administered the DRA reading
assessment for all students three times in 08-09. The average DRA scores in the grades follow:
kindergarten 6; grade one 18; and grade two 26. These scores were in the expect range of
performance for each grade level. DRA results from the 11th Quarter of all first and second grade
students were analyzed and used by 1-2 teachers in their APPLES projects and in the articulation
process for the 2009-2010 class lists.
                                                                                                          24
