Building a list is not rocket science but without a list you are dead in the water.
It does not matter if you are a one-man-band working out of your bedroom or if you are an
international conglomerate like McDonalds. Without customers they are both screwed. The only
difference is with an online business you can target your customers with pinpoint accuracy that
companies like McDonalds can't do. Their business relies on having fixed locations, expensive
advertising and passing trade.
With online marketing you can extend your reach across the globe and reach millions of people at
a tiny fraction of the cost in a fraction of the time, if you have a list. You don't need expensive
locations, stock, employees, passing trade etc.

One lady said, "Hmm, why would I want to build a massive list?" The reason is simple. Without a
list of customers every business whether they operate online or offline have no business... Period!
Okay, let's get down to building an Opt-In box to build your list of customers.
Don't panic! You don't need to have a product to sell at this moment in time, you just need to take
action and follow this step by step process.
You don't even need a website! If you can send out emails, you can build a list and promote stuff
via email automatically through AWeber's 5 click process.
Step 1. Go to AWeber.com
Sign up for an account. Yes, it will cost you some money but you can try it out for $1.00 a trial
period. It is well worth the money.
AWeber has numerous tutorials and videos that explain how to use their website tools. It is really
simple. Jump in, it is all about learning through trial and error. If you won't do this then forget about
Internet marketing! The world won't stop turning if you make a mistake, just start again!
There are six tabs across the top of the AWeber website; Home, My Lists, Messages, Subscribers,
Web Forms, Reports.
Step 2. Click the Web Forms tab.
Step 3. Next, click the green "+ Create Web Form" button.
This will take you to the Web Form Generator page. Here there are numerous different templates
to build your Opt-In box. Choose whichever one you like, they are all editable so you can type in
whatever you want as a heading.
An Opt-In box is a small box that you (usually) place on your website. This is an important tool that
will build your list by getting visitors to your website to give you their "Name" and "Email Address".
Once you have these details you can build a list of customers and contact them whenever you
want to, or whenever you have an offer to promote or an item to sell.
Remember, the AWeber Opt-In boxes can be edited so you can add whatever wording you want
to encourage people to give you their details.
4. Click the "Go To Step 2" button.
The great thing about AWeber is they send the customer a confirmation email to the customer to
ensure that they personally requested your information before they can download or visit the
webpage etc., that you want them to visit.
By having a double opt-in confirmation you will ensure that you have fewer opt-outs or angry
customers. The customer MUST confirm that they WANT you to send them your information.
AWeber, have custom "Thank You" pages as a basic text email, an audio email, a video email or
you can make your own custom email. Either way, the customer will be in no doubt that they did
request more information from you.
5. Once you have saved your Opt-In box, click the "Go To Step 3" button
You should now be on the final page titled, "Who Will Publish This Form To Your Website?"
You have three options:
1. I will Install My Form.
2. My Web Designer Will Install My Form.
3. Have AWeber Host My Form.
Option 1. "I Will Install My Form" is the one I usually choose. Click the big black button and a line
of javascript code appears in a box. Simply copy that line of code and insert it on the webpage that
you want it to appear on.
Option 2. "My Web Designer Will Install My Form" allows you to send your web designer an email
from the current AWeber page. AWeber then automatically email their installation instructions to
your designer. You can add a message also and further instructions to them if you wish.
Option 3. "Have AWeber Host My Form" This option is ideal if you don't have a website. The
reason being that in AWeber, you can create "Follow Up Messages". These are email messages
(usually selling or promoting something). You can add as many messages as you want and
schedule them to be sent out automatically at a particular time each day, or on a particular day,
etc.
Because you have already created your "Follow Up Messages" your customer will hear from you
at regular intervals, even whilst you are away on holiday. Because this is automatic, you can get
on with your life and build a list of customers who are following a pre-ordained route that you have
laid out for them to follow from your first email message to them, where you are building a
relationship with them, to the point where they become loyal customers.
AWeber have thought of everything, if a customer no longer wishes to hear from you, they can
unsubscribe from your list at any time. People will do this from time to time, so don't take it
personally. They usually unsubscribe once they have found out what they want to know and they
head off chasing the next shiny object.
That is how you create an Opt-In box to build a list of customers.
You are now wondering where the customer's details are kept aren't you? Don't worry, AWeber do
