History of the NY Yankees
Syllabus – Sem 2 - 2010
KAbbey
Did you know?? This popular All-American baseball team was actually known as the Highlanders during
its humble beginnings, but apparently the nickname Highlanders couldn't really catch on fast with the
local sportswriters which is why they often used the monicker Yankees or Yanks (the nickname Yankees
were actually coined from the fact that the New York Yankees were an All-American team while
American locals are actually referred to as Yanks mostly by the British), since people obviously liked this
nickname more, they decided to change their name in to the New York Yankees and they haven't
changed it since. (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/al/nyyanks/yankees.html)
This course, as the title implies, is all about the NY Yankees. In addition, we will cover a general history
of baseball and how the Yankees come into play (pardon the pun!)
Materials Needed: Notebook or Loose Leaf Paper, Pocket Folder, Pen or Pencil EVERY DAY!!!!
Format: The format for this class will vary, but will generally include short lectures, class
discussions, small group work, appropriate videos or films, music, and/or guest speakers. This
class is all about exploring, discussing, debating, listening, analyzing; it’s not primarily a lecture
class so participation is EXPECTED.
Grading:
o Classwork (due at the end of class) + Homework (due at the start of class) 25%
o Participation in Discussion/Classroom Professionalism 15%
o Current Events (ON TIME)/Quizzes (Includes Progress Reports) 15%
o Projects (In and Out of the classroom) 25%
o Tests 20%
We will read two books in this course, both of which will be provided for you. The reading assignments
for the class will usually not be particularly long, but they will be steady, so don’t fall behind! They are:
“The New York Yankees – The Most Successful Team in Major League History” and “The Last Night of the
Yankee Dynasty.”
A Note Regarding Homework
- Your assignment must be turned in on time. On time means it will be collected at the
beginning of class – NOT during class.
- If you do not understand a question, please ask me. Westfield students, come to me during
advisement or after school to work on the question. Remote students, please feel free to eMail
me anytime. You will not be penalized for this. I need to know if you don’t understand
something, otherwise I can’t help you.
Absentee Policy:
- It is your responsibility to make-up work you miss while you are out. This includes notes,
1
projects, quizzes, tests, etc. See me for what you missed and as to when you can make it up.
- I expect your assignments to be in by the end of the week you are out. Assignments handed in
after this time period will be given a 2-point per day deduction for each day it is late.

Classroom Expectations:
- Come to class PREPARED. Have your materials with you.
- Attend to personal needs before coming to class. Please do not ask for a pass unless you have a
true emergency.
- Do not cheat. Students caught cheating will receive a zero and a phone call home. Both the
student who shares his work for an independent assignment AND the person who copies it will
suffer the same consequences. This means, if you allow someone to copy your homework, you
will receive a zero!
- Respect yourself, your classmates, and your instructor.
- Food and drink are allowed in this class. It is a privilege! If I find wrappers on the floor or it
becomes distracting, the entire group will lose the privilege of my awesome banana bread in
addition to your own snacks.
Classroom Participation:
- You are expected to actively participate in class. Just showing up and breathing is not
acceptable. Be active: do what we're doing in class, work for solutions to in class problems, ask
relevant questions, offer ideas, make comparisons, etc.
- The Distance Learning environment is unique and challenging at the same time. Please respect
the student who is speaking. Though we can all see and hear each other in “real time” from time
to time there are slight delays and the noise – even tapping on the table – can be very
distracting.
Cheating/Plagiarizing:
- Students cheating / plagiarizing will receive zero (0) points for that assignment, test, quiz,
etcetera. If the student repeats this offense, he / she will receive an INC for that grading period.
Allowing your paper to be copied or plagiarized by another student constitutes cheating and
will be dealt with in the same way. Be careful of this when you are researching an assignment
together with a partner!! You bear the burden of proof when it comes to plagiarism.
We have a lot to cover this semester. If you ever have any questions, not matter what they
are, PLEASE do not be afraid to ask me for the answers! If you are a Yankees fan or even if
you aren’t, this information is exciting and just plain COOL! As we undertake a variety of
projects, your gained knowledge of the insight of baseball and the NY Yankees will be a great
asset to have.
