					Fun with Sounds                                                               Part 1

                                     Card Game

Materials:   3 sets of cards (each with a different Rhyme Card and an Answer Card)
             a worksheet



              a sound file of the Rhyme

Procedure:


1.   Teacher divides learners in groups of 3-4.
2.   Teacher selects a learner from each group as the reader and the other learners as
     the listeners.
3.   Teacher gives each reader a Rhyme Card and each listener a worksheet.
4.   Teacher invites the readers to read out the rhyme* clearly and slowly to their
     groups.
5.   Each listener circles the words he/she has heard (e.g. fat, cat, rat) on his/her
     worksheet.
6.   Teacher gives the listeners the Answer Card to check the answers.
7.   The listener who can identify most words correctly is the winner.


* If readers have problems in reading out the rhyme, the teacher may ask learners to
listen to the tape or sound file of the rhyme.

  Set A - Rhyme Card

                I say, “Ice-cream makes you fat !”

                This is to my big, big cat.

                She likes running after my rat.

                “Your what?”

                “Right, you can say it’s a toy,

                But it looks like a bat !”

                  “Oh, what bad luck !”




  Set B – Answer Card

            cup / but / duck / cut / luck

Set C - long /i:/ and short /I/ as middle vowel sounds


  Set C - Rhyme Card

                   New shoes for Jean

                   Sit down, and close your lips.

                   Show your feet

                   And you’ll have these for your need.

                   For just a bit

                   They’re not good for you, Jean,

                   Mum will have them in the bin !




  Set C – Answer Card
