					 THE FREDERICK DOUGLASS MEMORIAL SPEECH ARTS COMPETITION

RE:            The Frederick Douglass Memorial Speech Arts Oratorical Competition

The Oratorical Competition is designed to promote the growth and development of
oratorical skills in young school age students. We encourage all elementary, middle and
high school students to enter the local competition that requires each participant to
deliver one of Frederick Douglass’s speeches.

The local competition, open to students from Rochester and the surrounding
communities, will be held November 12, and 13, 2011. To insure available scholarship
aid to seniors, high school seniors must submit evidence of an application to a school of
higher learning, vocational training or technical school prior to the competition.

Enclosed are materials and instructions for the Oratorical Competition. Please forward
the enclosed COACH PACKET to a staff member who will act as your school
coach/facilitator. A member of the Oratorical Competition committee will contact you
during the week of October 3, 2011 to get the names of your coach/facilitator.

Location:      Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 549 Clarissa St., Rochester, NY 14608
Dates:         Grades K-5 Saturday, November 12, 2011
               Grades 6-12 Sunday, November 13, 2011
Time:          3:00 PM Sharp!

Please note: There will be NO on-site registration! The DEADLINE for submitting the
official registration forms with 2 copies of the speech is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2011.
One copy of the speech submitted by Grades 3-12 must be handwritten; copies submitted
by K-2 grade students do not have to be handwritten.

***An informational meeting is available for coaches. Please contact 732-3708 or
271-7010 prior to October 15, 2011 to set up a meeting.***

Thank you so much for accepting the position of COACH for your school. Enclosed in
this packet are materials and instructions regarding the Frederick Douglass Memorial
Speech Arts Competition. Please follow the guidelines that are outlined in this packet.
Please note: An informational meeting is available by contacting 732-3708 or 271-
7010 PRIOR to October 15, 2011.

Please encourage students in your school to participate in this exciting program. Please
give each student a copy of this packet and review the information and guidelines. Please
submit the OFFICIAL REGISTRATION FORMS by the DEADLINE DATE OF
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2011, along with 2 COPIES OF THEIR SPEECHES. One
copy of the speech submitted by 3-12 grade students must be handwritten; copies
submitted by K-2 grade students do not have to be handwritten. A member of the
Frederick Douglass Speech Arts Competition Committee will contact you during the
week of October 3, 2011, to get the number of students participating from your school.

The local competitions will be held on Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November
13 at the Memorial AME Zion Church, 549 Clarissa Street, Rochester, NY. To insure
available scholarship aid to seniors, high school seniors must submit evidence of an
application to a school of higher learning, vocational training or technical school prior to
the competition.

The Deadline for submitting the OFFICIAL REGISTRATION FORM with 2 copies

     Time:         3:00 PM Sharp!

2.   Registration Information

     Official Registration Form with 2 copies of speech must be submitted by
     DEADLINE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2011

3.   Categories for Entry
     -      Grades K-3
     -      Grades 4-5
     -      Grades 6-8

4.   Eligibility Requirements
     -       Greater Rochester Area Elementary, Middle and High School Students
             (Grades K-12)
     -       ORIGINAL SPEECH must be written by Frederick Douglass
     -       Participants required to have knowledge of Frederick Douglass (in the
             event of a tie)
     -       High School SENIORS must be in good standing to receive a scholarship
     -       High School SENIORS must also have made application to a school of
             higher learning or a vocational or technical school, prior to the

6.    Delivery of Presentation

      -      Grades K-3            1-3 minutes
      -      Grades 4-5            2-5 minutes
      -      Grades 6-8            5-8 minutes
      -      Grades 9-12           6-12 minutes

**Students MUST speak the minimum number of minutes required**

7.    Judging Criteria

      -   Delivery should be loud and clear, but not overly dramatized

      -   Speeches MUST be memorized, NO notes

      -   Begin each speech with: ―Mr./Mrs., Director, Honorable Judges, Ladies and
          Gentlemen: I have chosen for my subject (speech title)‖

      -   Standards for judging presentation:
          -Did the speaker establish an atmosphere?
          -Was the voice strong and projected?
          -Was tempo in harmony with desired effect?
          -Was material accurate and well organized?
          -Did speaker seem to understand the material?
          -Was there a good speaker-audience relationship?
          -Were gestures and body movement appropriate?
          -Did the speaker’s voice enhance the presentation?
          -Was the overall presentation effective?
