Weeksville Heritage Center, a 19th century African American historic site located in central Brooklyn, is
seeking two part-time, unpaid interns in the Collections department for the Spring 2011 semester.
Weeksville Heritage Center’s (WHC) mission to document, preserve and interpret the history of free
African American communities in Weeksville, Brooklyn and beyond and to create and inspire innovative,
contemporary uses of African American history through education, the arts, and civic engagement

Collections Intern will assist the Collections Manager in completing an inventory of objects held in trust
by WHC. This inventory will include objects on display in the historic Hunterfly Road houses and in
storage. WHC collections include archaeological and historical artifacts, historical photographs, books,
papers and oral histories, in addition to three historic houses with period furnishings interpreted for the
general public. In addition to inventory, the Collections Intern may perform other collections
management duties.

Archival Intern will use the PastPerfect collections database under the direction of the Collections
Manager to catalogue books in the WHC archives. These catalogue records will provide a valuable
record of WHCs resources. Other archival tasks may be undertaken.

A Collections Internship or Archival Internship at WHC is an ideal way to learn more about local history,
material culture, practical collections management and archive skills, African American studies, and
archival and collections research.

Prospective interns must be a B.A. or M.A. level student or recent graduate in Museum or Material
Culture Studies, Archive and Library Sciences, History, Anthropology, African American Studies or a
related field. Individuals should have a creative mind, strong attention to detail and the ability to work
independently. Applicants must be available weekdays, have excellent organizational, research, and
communication skills, and knowledge of MS Word (PC). Knowledge of PastPerfect is preferred, but not
required. This is a non-paying position.

To Apply: Submit resume, cover letter, and two (2) references to: collections@weeksvillesociety.org,
subject line INTERN. For more information on Weeksville, please visit: www.weeksvillesociety.org.
