Gaoyao City (Chinese: 高要市; pinyin: Gāoyàoshì) is
a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhaoqing
prefecture-level city in Guangdong province, in southern
China. Population: 706,000.
Geography
Gaoyao is located on the southern bank of the Xijiang
River, just opposite to Zhaoqing City. Both are about
100 km away from Guangzhou, the provincial capital.

History
Gaoyao was established as a county as early as in the Han
Dynasty. It was named after Gaoyao Gorge (now renamed

Lingyang Gorge) on the Xijiang River, and became a city
at county level in 1993.
