Volkswagen Safety in Review 2012 by CommonwealthCars

									                           Volkswagen Safety in Review 2012

Volkswagen engineers aim to develop cars with an eye towards design and safety. The
2012 Volkswagen line-up has achieved both goals this year. Featuring newly updated
model designs and a large number of innovative safety features, Volkswagen fans have a
lot to be happy about. In fact, thanks to the advanced safety technologies of Volkswagen,
nine different VW models were selected as IIHS “Top Safety Picks” for 2012. In the
automotive world, this is no small feat.

IIHS Safety Requirements
Vehicles that are designated as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute of Highway
Safety must earn good rankings in all four categories of vehicle safety testing including:

   - Frontal Impact Testing
   - Side Impact Testing
   - Rear Impact Testing
   - Roof Strength Ratings

Each vehicle must also feature safety technologies such as Electronic Stability Control
(ESC) and head protection airbags. Many of the Volkswagen models that were selected
for this year’s honor also feature a reinforced front end that is optimized to absorb a crash
impact more effectively, helping to earn it high marks in frontal impact testing. As a
required option, Electronic Stability Control helps correct the car when a driver suddenly
oversteers or understeers during an emergency, keeping the car smoothly on course. An
ABS braking system is also included on all Volkswagen models and provides controlled
braking in the event of an emergency. California Volkswagen drivers also benefit from
the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) that alerts you immediately when the air
pressure in a tire falls above or below the recommended levels.
