Strategic Renewal for 2012
Brisbane Catholic Education have launched the new look Strategic Renewal Plan for 2012-2016.
As we get ready to review and reshape the goals for St. Martin’s it is important to reflect on these
overarching goals that apply to 132 Catholic schools in Brisbane. There are four major areas within
the context of a Catholic School. The detailed version will be sent home to parents later this term
for us all to have a common understanding. The four priorities are: Priority 1 – Mission and
Religious Education, Priority 2 – Learning and Teaching, Priority 3 – Professional Practice and
Collaborative Relationships, Priority 4 – Strategic Resourcing.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATION
The Woolworths and Coles School Voucher Programs have now come to an end and orders have
been processed for resources for the school. In total, our community compiled 16,946 Woolworths
Points and 60,835 Coles Points. These points have been ‘cashed in’ for resources. The Coles
Program will benefit our school by providing sporting resources and the Woolworths Program will
provide some much needed science resources.
Thank you to all the families who contributed by collecting and bringing in the shopping vouchers.
A special thank you must go to Peta McGory and Irena Ellis for the many hours both spent
counting and processing each individual voucher. It was a huge effort and one that is much
appreciated by us. Special thanks also goes to our Teacher Librarian, Madonna Johnston, and
HPE Teacher, Greg Cran, for selecting the resources that we will receive as part of the program.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Last Friday we celebrated World Teachers Day. We started the day with staff prayer and sharing
our stories of why we decided to be teachers – one staff member was inspired by her grandmother
who was a pupil teacher at 16 years of age, another did a short stint teaching religion to State
School children on a Saturday morning, another spoke to some students from his old school and
realized that he was ‘home’, that teaching is what he really wanted to do. It was affirming to all
present to hear so many positive stories from people who have dedicated their lives to the vocation
of teaching. Below is a quote from David Hutton which I think is very appropriate:
“Parker J Palmer, the widely read American educator and commentator has said that good
teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of
the teacher. When we teach, we share who we are in what we do. As I commented in my message
to staff earlier this week, as Christians working out what we value (who we are) starts with what we
believe. At the heart of being Christian is belief in the person and message of Jesus. But Jesus is
not merely an historical figure who did and said some good things in the past. We believe that he
revealed the face of God to us in human form, taught us how to live by his life and sent the Holy
Spirit to be his ongoing ‘connection’ with us in our everyday lives. In our schools we are guided by
the beliefs and values we espouse and our students’ lives are enriched accordingly.
It is a great privilege to teach and today we reflect on, celebrate, and give thanks for that
privilege. “

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
The Instrumental Music Group would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr
Paul Johnson for his generous donation of replacement suit bags for the St
Martin’s Senior band uniforms. This has provided much improved storage and
protection for the uniforms, and will certainly streamline operations backstage
before and after performances!
Instrument Hire 2012
Expressions of interest are currently being taken for those students wishing to hire an instrument
from the St Martin’s Instrumental Music Group for the Instrumental Music Program in 2012. Some
parents who attended the Parent Information evening in October have already indicated a number
of preferences for instrument hire. It would be appreciated if parents could confirm the
instrument required as soon as possible by contacting me on the number listed below.
Following are some details relevant to Instrument Hire, band uniforms and levies for sheet music &
folders.
INSTRUMENT HIRE
A range of instruments are available for hire through the school. Instrument hire is based on a
monthly fee, invoiced each term (total of 10 months for the school year), with an annual charge of
$50.00 at the end of the year for servicing of the instrument. Monthly hire rates vary between
$20.00 and $30.00, depending upon the instrument.
MUSIC/ FOLDER LEVY
A $10.00 music/folder levy is charged annually to all instrumental music students to help cover the
costs of providing sheet music and folders for the bands, and various excursions to music
performances and competitions. The sheet music and folders are returned at the end of each year.
For Junior Band members, this is the only levy payable for the year.
BAND UNIFORMS
Junior band members : no band uniform required, day uniform is worn for all performances.
Senior band members : uniform requirements are as follows:
- Long black pants
- Black socks and black shoes
- Long sleeved front buttoned white shirt with collar (available at Big
W. Lowes, Best & Less – cheaper to buy a ‘boy’ styled shirt)
- Band Vest
Band Pants : Students may wear their own black pants, or band pants are available for hire
through the music support group. For those hiring band pants for the first time, a deposit of $20.00
is paid, which is fully refundable when the student leaves the senior band or the school, providing
pants are returned in good condition. An annual hire fee of $5.00 is charged for each year that the
student has the pants. (ie.a total of $25.00 for the first year in Senior Band, and $5.00 for each
year thereafter). The pants may be exchanged at any time for larger sizes throughout the duration
of the hire.
Term 4 Instrument Hire 2011
Invoices for Term 4 Instrument Hire shall be issued next week, and it would be appreciated if all
payments for Term 4 and any outstanding payments could be finalised at the latest by Friday 12th
November. Please remember to indicate on the return form if you are continuing hire of the
instrument in 2012.
Music Levies 2011
It would be appreciated if all accounts for Music Levies could be finalised by Friday 12th
November. Please ensure that the payment slips at the bottom of all invoices are returned with
payment, in an envelope marked “Instrumental Music”, to the office.
Band Pants 2011
Those students who have hired Band Pants and who are leaving the band at the end of this year
should return the band pants, cleaned and in good condition, in a plastic bag with their name
attached, to Ms Mc Nelliey. Band Pant deposit refunds will then be able to be processed and
forwarded to parents.
If students are returning to the Instrumental program next year, please keep band pants until next
year, when a time shall be scheduled for band pant fittings. Students may exchange their band
pants at that time if required.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries.
