Wal-Mart has been a staple of America since July 2, 1962, when Sam Walton opened the first

Wal-Mart Discount City store. Within a few years, Wal-Mart Discount City stores began to spread across

the country. In 1968, it opened its first stores outside Arkansas, in Sikeston, Missouri and Claremore,

Oklahoma. Sam Walton found success in offering consumers options and variety. Since that first store

opened, Wal-Mart has now entered the grocery business and now the company controls about 20% of the

retail grocery and consumables business.

This says a lot about a man who began his retail career after working just 18 months at J.C Penny. Sam

Walton found success early on with offering variety, and options when no one else was.

Consumers want more for their dollar and Wal-Mart has centered their focus on this idea, and has not

apologized for that fact. In fact, Wal-Mart’s sole existence relies on the consumers search for the lowest

priced goods.

Wal-Mart has transferred itself from a simple variety store into Wal-Mart Supercenter and has

other chains which include Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market and Sam’s Club. Wal-Mart Inc. has found a

way to offer options to the consumer not classically offered in grocery. By offering options such as an

optical center, one-hour photo processing lab, Tire & Lube Express, and even in some cases hair and nail

salons, pet shops, and pharmacies, Wal-Mart has taken steps to break the mold and offer consumers

options that other stores cannot and has done a good job at that. With these types of options you could be

in a Wal-Mart Superstore for hours and complete all of your afternoon shopping.

This idea isn’t lost on Wal-Mart Inc., now offering the ability to get a money order from the ATM shows

also why Wal-Mart is important. The middle class and below is where Wal-Mart is targeting its

demographic, and with the gap between rich and poor spreading, that good is sure to grow.

America’s communities surrounding the Wal-Mart Superstore often benefit directly and non-directly

manners for (might want to take that out...) Wal-Mart being in the area. With Wal-Mart being in many
                                                                                  Everyday Low Prices

communities, it gives businesses the opportunity to appeal to shoppers either going to Wal-Mart or

leaving the store. Consumers benefit by just having the store in the area; with Wal-Mart entering the area

many other stores are sure to follow. Many businesses feel stability by seeing Wal-Mart enter the area.

Businesses such as gas stations benefit because people need gas either before leaving and hoping on the

highway or after when returning. Starbucks coffee chain comes to the area offering consumers a

refreshing break after shopping or if they need a boost before shopping. Restaurants also come to the area

having the appeal for mid-size families and making their food accessible being in an environment where

so much is going on, that many might forget to eat until their young one says they’re hungry. That fact

isn’t lose ? on Wal-Mart and many Wal-Mart’s offer either local dining or McDonalds inside the store;

therefore, consumers don’t have to leave the store and continue to shop. KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken),

Burger-King, and Taco Bell are a few of the restaurants that benefit by offering options and other

choices. These types of communities are often copied in many different locations. These kinds of

communities benefit consumers in the small town area because it offers services that many local “mom

and pop” cannot do. Many items that local stores have, need to be ordered and the consumer must wait

for it; Wal-Mart either has it on hand or can get it from another Wal-Mart store within the hour. This

readily accessible availability, demonstrates why having such a store in the neighborhood is a good idea.

Options and availability is what Wal-Mart brings to a community and its surrounding areas.

With the building of Wal-Mart stores and thousands of new employees entering the area, these

employees need somewhere to live and somewhere for their own children to go to school.

This benefits not only the consumers but the entire area long after many of these business have closed

down. Building schools and preschool and daycare centers would be ideal in a situation where a new

Wal-Mart has opened up. Bringing these kinds of things to the area would also strengthen the area and

bring other family friendly stores. Overall the growth and benefits would spread not only to benefit

consumer, but employees as well. Most employees working at Wal-Mart are likely to shop at Wal-Mart,
                                                                                  Everyday Low Prices

so they benefit from preschool in the area. These kinds of things are different and help Wal-Mart separate

itself from the pack. With products to also include a full-service supermarket including: meat and

poultry, baked goods, delicatessen, frozen foods, dairy products, garden produce, and fresh seafood.

Some stores even offer car insurance and even full service banks, Wal-Mart is always improving to stay

one up on the competition and still have the same savings. The savings also comes from Wal -Marts

Private label brands, about 40% of their products are sold at Wal-Mart. Private label brands gives

consumers the option of paying a lower price for the same product, without the nice labels and name.

Wal-Mart offers options to small towns that don’t have a large pharmacy and variety with label

brand pharmacy, so they don’t have to pay the full price for many of the expensive drugs

currently offered. And offering the same options to at warehouse stores such as Sam's Club and

even offering Sam's Club stores are "membership" stores and most customers buy annual

memberships. However, non-members can make purchases either by buying a one-day

membership or paying a surcharge based on the price of the purchase. Some locations also sell

Wal-Mart subsidiary have came along away and Sam’s Club is one sign of that change. Sam’s

Club has offered many small businesses options for local stores who don’t have time for delivers,

but can go locally and buy it for them self’s. Applying for Memberships and even renewing

memberships has become easier. Members can renew their memberships via the internet or in the

store at the Membership Services desk. Large volume sales also included many of the same

things Wal-Mart includes such as Produce, meat, seafood, fresh baked goods, flowers, clothing,

books. Sam’s Club in some situations offers 10% surcharge is added to the prices for non-

members, except for optical, pharmacy, cafe, or alcohol items where available. In a way to gather
                                                                             Everyday Low Prices

new members and that 10% surcharge can be membership. With Sam’s Club ranking second to

Cost-Co many more type such as this one are sure to come.

Sam’s Clubs has acquired PACE membership Warehouse from Kmart and turned those

stores into Sam’s Clubs locations. Sam’s Club has made exclusive with companies DELL and

Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Giving 47 million customer a chance to save on car rentals and giving

Enterprise a branch of all new customer and customer who normally wouldn’t rent with

Enterprise. These type of exclusive deals make Sam’s Club unique and give it something

different to offer. These deal’s have also stretched out to the travel situation of Sam’s Club

Travel, Sam’s Club Travel is now powered with expedia.com.

The impact of the Sam’s Club of the other services has been shown with the price of oil

being one-hundred dollars a barrel. Sam’s Club gasoline services prices gasoline cheaper then

local competitors.

Wal-Mart also has donated more than $1.5 million national BackPack Program, The

Nation’s Food Bank Network will deliver backpacks filled with nutritious, protein-rich food to

school children in need. With the money raised thousands of backpacks filled with much needed

food for school children to take home. It has helped to rasie funds and build awarness it the

problem of hunger, with a “Be A Part Of The Solution To End Hunger” campaign.

Wal-Mart Inc has done a great job at bringing together what is local to the area and what isn’t

and bringing to many small towns. So when a Wal-Mart stands up, it isn’t just Wal-Mart Inc who

benefit, but the community.
