Directions: Read through The Children’s War packets then complete the following activity.



List all the ways children were involved in the Civil War.

      Powder Monkeys = brought                             Drummer boys
       ammunition to the soldiers                           Doctor assistants
      Fought in battles                                    Musicians


What were the experiences of Northern children during the war?

      Volunteered to fight with the Union
      Some of their parents or older brothers died during the war
      Saw a lot of dead bodies & amputated limbs
      They had to take care of their families if their fathers were off fighting

What were the experiences of Southern children during the war?

      Saw the fighting in their own towns
      Lost family members – to death or just for long periods of time while they were away
       fighting
      Fought in the war
      They may have ran out of food, water and other basic things you need to survive
      Saw a lot of dead bodies

What were the experiences of slave children during the war?

      Forced to fight in battles
      Many of their fathers fought
      A lot became orphans because their parents were killed

How did the Civil War change the lives of children?

      Their families were changed because of death
      Life was very serious all the time. There weren’t a lot of happy times for them.
      Their home life was affected – ran out of food and water a lot if they lived in the South

      Body language isn’t positive – may tell us that their life wasn’t good
