Premature and small infants should not be placed in car
safety seats with shields, abdominal pads, or arm rests
that could directly contact an infant’s face or neck during
an impact and injure the child.
For optimal protection, pediatricians should counsel
parents of most children (those who weigh more than 12
lb at 4 months of age) to encourage use of a convertible
car safety seat that will accommodate them rear facing at
higher weights.
A convertible car safety seat is positioned semi-reclined
and rear facing for a child until at least 1 year of age and
at least 20 lbs. The seat is positioned upright and forward
facing for an older and heavier child who weighs up to 40
lbs. and may be used as long as the child fits well (eg, tops
of ears below the top of the car safety seat back and shoul-

ders below the seat strap slots).
A forward-facing seat, a combination seat, or a belt-
positioning booster seat should be used when the child
has outgrown a convertible safety seat but is too small to
use the adult vehicle’s safety belts. Adult vehicle safety
belts should not be used until the shoulder belt can be
positioned across the chest with the lap belt low and snug
across the thighs; the child should fit against the vehicle’s
seat back with his or her feet hanging down when the legs
are bent at the knees. A belt-positioning booster seat
should be used until the adult vehicle safety belt fits well.
Many new vehicles are equipped with integrated (built-in)
car safety seats that are designed for forward-facing riders
who are at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 lbs.

BOOK REVIEW
Paxton Cox- June 1
Peyton and I had took the opportunity to see the

rium. If you missed it, I can only say that I'm sorry
Herb Halladay– July 2 because it was absolutely fabulous! Afterward, I
Cindy Perez– July 4 bought the book and the soundtrack (Peyton can sing
every song!).
Austin Pederson-July 17
It is a sensational work by Gregory Maguire that not
Maggie Thomas– July 18 only lets us learn more about the Oz we know from
childhood, but also offers us new perspective on what
Leigh Anne Wachter– July 21
could have been in this classic tale.
Daulton Tuten– July23 We learn of the relationship between the two sisters:
Elphalba, who would grow to become the Wicked
Christina Domenguez– July 26 witch of the west, and Nessarose, her sister, who
would grow to become the Witch of the east.
We also learn of the relationship and friendship be-
tween Galinda, who later changes her name to Glinda
(the Good witch), and Elphalba. Their relationship and
friendship takes some very unusual turns filled with
adventure.
Wicked also paints a different picture of the wizard
than that of the Wizard of Oz in that in Wicked, he
was really a vicious controlling man who tried to run
everyone's lives in Oz. You also discover that in her
own way, the Wicked Witch, also known as Elphalba,
although she claimed not to have a soul, actually does
good deeds, and even falls in Love.
The book also tells of the different people from the
different parts of Oz, from The Munshkinlanders, to
the Quaddlings and the different parts of Oz from
which they come.
You also learn that after the Wizard of Oz there still
were adventures in Oz through a surprise in the last
part of the book.
It is a long book that took me weeks to finish, but it
was well worth every hour I spent.

Creating Your Home Inventory: Dot Jervis
We’ve all taken steps to ensure the safety of our homes – installing security systems, upgrading to deadbolt locks, making sure that
smoke and fire detectors are in good working order. The fact is, however, that each year thousands of homes are burglarized, while oth-
ers are damaged or destroyed by fire, storms, natural disasters and other hazards. Those who have experienced such an ordeal often face
the additional burden of trying to remember details about the possessions that are now gone. A home inventory can make coping with
the aftermath of unexpected loss somewhat easier. Although it’s true that “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone,” creating a
home inventory will help you:
Keep track of the possessions that make your home special…...Maintain an appropriate level of insurance protection…...Settle insurance
claims faster…...Verify losses on your income tax returns.
Home Inventory Basics
What should be included in your home inventory? Most experts suggest including the following:
Furniture and home accessories…... Appliances and home electronics (including MP3 and video game players)…... Artwork…...China
and glassware…... Tools and lawn care supplies (including lawn mowers, snow blowers and the like)…... Clothing and other personal
belongings.
In other words, all of your belongings need to be cataloged. While keeping track of everything you own may seem like a daunting task,
the simplest approach may be to use your video camera.
Your Video Inventory
Set aside an afternoon, grab your video camera and take a walk through your home, room by room, capturing images of your valuables.
Open cabinets and closets to make sure that you make a record of all your belongings (everyday tableware, DVDs, CDs, books, records,
etc.).
Tips:
Take advantage of the audio feature and describe the contents of each room (including where and when you bought each item, its make
and model and what it cost). It’s particularly important to note the value of such “big ticket” items as artwork, collectibles and antiques.
One good idea is to make a display of your jewelry, complete with cards listing such important information as each piece’s appraised
value or cost. Don’t forget the attic, garage and other storage areas! Include such items as sports equipment, bicycles, tools, lawn mowers,
snow blowers and the like. Step outside. Remember that your outdoor living areas (patio, porch and pool) are part of your home as well.
Make sure to make a video catalog of your outdoor furniture, grills, and other furnishings.
A Photo Opportunity
While you’re making your video record, have another member of the family take still photos of important individual items.
Be thorough. Pay attention to such details as furniture hardware (particularly important for antiques).
Use the back of each printed photo as a quick reference.
Note what the pictured item is, where you bought it, the replacement or appraisal value, and (in the case of electronics and appliances)
the make, model and serial number.
If you are using a digital camera, download your photo inventory onto your computer then burn a disk of all the images.
List It
While it would be sufficient to make a complete inventory by writing everything down in a notebook or by creating a list on your com-
puter (don’t forget to print a hard copy), we’re offering a free, downloadable “Home Inventory Checklist” – featuring a simple room-by-
room format designed to make creating your home inventory easier.
Keep It Safe
Once you’ve created your home inventory video and list, store them (along with such other valuable documents as insurance policies
and wills) in a safe deposit box or other separate, secure location.
Update It
Remember, whenever you make a significant purchase, add the information to your home inventory.

TIPS FOR SAVING WATER INDOORS:
Turn off water when you are shaving or brushing your
teeth.
Take short showers ( five minutes or less ).
Fix all leaks---This could save you lots of money also!
Defrost food in advance--use your microwave or set
food in refrigerator overnight.
Reuse water-- Do not waste water waiting for it to get
hot; capture this water for other uses, such as plant
watering. You can also place a bucket in the shower to
catch excess water and use it to water plants.
