Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study aims to determine if the hermit crabs’ population can be used as an indicator of the presence

of marine pollutants particularly of bleach. This will be done by correlating the mortality rate of the Hermit Crabs
to the different concentrations of the marine pollutant bleach. The study will be the conducted in an aquarium in

order to prevent the Hermit Crabs to migrate to other seashores and to control other extraneous variables. Initial

conditions of the aquarium will be closely monitored and maintained to ensure that death of the crabs can be

associated to the presence of bleach only. The Hermit crabs’ specie, weight, and age will be considered as

extraneous variables for this research. Also, the brand of the bleach is considered as extraneous variables. The

researchers will not study other effects of the bleach on the behavior, growth rate, sexual activity and fertility of

Hermit crabs which they will possibly exhibit after exposure to varying concentrations of bleach.

The study of the Hermit Crabs as marine pollutant indicator to bleach will start off with the gathering of the 30
Hermit Crabs and placing of Hermit Crabs in their respective aquariums. Next is the preparation of the aquariums
of the different groups each group having six hermit crabs. Group A with 0% bleach concentration. The same
procedure follows on Groups B, C, D, and E with 2%, 5%, 10% and 50% bleach concentrations, respectively. The
researchers would take five months to observe and gather data about the Hermit crabs’ mortality rate and
population while they are in the aquariums by indicating the number of survivors per aquarium. Data gathering
and analysis will then follow and lastly, will be the conclusion.

researchers… example how will you transport the crabs? What are the dimensions of the aquarium? How will you
prepare the bleach? How will you feed the crabs? How will you clean the aquarium? How many times are you
