speeding ticket
last night I got a speeding ticket. my second in a little over a year.
what happened was that a cop in a speed trap got me for not
slowing down immediately when going from a 35 to 25 mile zone.
you're supposed to hit the brakes the second you see the sign
and I didn't. now I'm afraid I might get too many points and lose
my license. let me tell you a little about my driving history.
I didn't drive between the ages twenty and thirty seven when I
married a lady with a car. I drove hers first and after I got
divorced, my own. it opened my life tremendously, really freed
me up. I found out that there were plenty of places worth seeing,
neighborhoods I should have gone to long before. I wished I'd
gotten the car earlier. I wouldn't have missed out on so much.
I didn't get any tickets for years, amazingly. I'm not a dangerous
driver, but I'm a pretty confused one. I'm also hyper, so I tend to
find myself driving a little over the speed limit. it seemed like no
big deal at first but I guess my luck ran out a while ago. I got
three tickets in as many years--all from getting caught in speed
traps.
the thing is, everyone drives over the limit from time to time--you
can't help it. and if a cop happens to see you, you get a ticket.
all you have to do is let your mind wander for a second and
you're in trouble. I mean, I'm no saint when it comes to driving
but I don't think the road is mine to rule, either.
so anyway, what it all boils down to is, now I have four points. if
I get more, my insurance payments will go up, which would put
me in a tough spot financially. if I get twelve, God forbid, they'll
take away my license and I won't be allowed to drive anymore.
I'll have to walk everywhere and take buses. the thing is, by now
the public transportation system stinks. and I don't want to have
to catch buses to go to work at 6:30 in the morning.
I guess I'd better concentrate on driving like I never have, make
sure I don't break any traffic rules. because if I get careless for just
a second... I'm gonna have to make a conscious effort to stay
below the speed limit at all times. I gotta admit, though, I'm
pretty scared right now.
