Comments

This small bioregion in the centre of the Northern Territory has not been well surveyed, but appears to share

its entire avifauna with other rangeland bioregions. It contains, however, the town of Tennant Creek, which

supports a major proportion of the population of the feral Barbary Dove, a species that has only become

established in the wild since the first Atlas period. Analyses of trends suggest substantial declines in almost

all guilds, but there is no obvious reason why this should have occurred.

Status: Semi-arid avifauna little different from other climatically similar regions.

Rare and

threatened: No major populations.

Increasers: Barbary Dove.

Indicators: Emu, Australian Bustard, Flock Bronzewing, Hooded Robin, Jacky Winter.

Trend: Major reporting rate declines.

Scenario: Probably little change beyond normal fluctuations.

Actions: Eradicate Barbary Dove.

Possibly restore a more patchy burning regime.
