History of the Karen National New Year
The Karen National New Year celebrations are held during the pleasant month of Pyathoe
(December/January of the Roman calendar). People mark the occasion bysounding the Karen horn
and drum, to maintain the tradition of the Karen New Year, until the end of time.
Officially, the Karen New Year began in 1938. Celebrations were first heldin 1939. It was on the first
of January 1938, (which that year correspondedwith the first of Pyathoe), that Karen national leaders
demands to theBritish administration for the Karen New Year were finally recognised, anddeclared
an official holiday. That date was also formally acknowledged asbeing the year 2677 on the Karen
calendar.
In fact, the movement for a distinct Karen national day was commenced by SayaSan Baw, in 1935. As
member of parliament for Tharyawati District, heargued that a Karen National Day should be
introduced. However, the Britishcolonial administration suggested that a Karen New Year day
would be a better alternative. In 1937, the Karen parliamentary representatives again presented
the case for a Karen National Day, again unsuccessfully.
The Karen National Association (KNA) realised that they instead had to worktowards the Karen
New Year day. On 2 August 1937, Saw Johnson Deepominn, member of parliament for Taungoo
District, presented the case to the lowerhouse. However the Karen representatives in the chamber
were split in theirsupport across the two sides of parliament- U Pu’s governing faction, andthe
opposition lead by Dr. Ba Maw. As the demands were coming from a memberof U Pu’s side (Johnson
Deepominn was an assistant minister), thosesupporting Ba Maw opposed the legislation. It failed
to be ratified.
Soon after, Dr. Ba Maw’s group formed a coalition, allowing it to seizepower. The proposal seemed
to be left with no chance of getting past thelower house. Members of the upper house, lead by
Saya San Baw, Sir San C.Po and Saya Mahn Shwe Ba, discussed the matter together. They lobbied
for,and gained the support of, some among the new Karen ministers. The demandwas retabled,
and passed.
Ba Maw’s cabinet ratified the proposal, and presented it to the Governor General for approval. In
late 1937, the Governor General signed the legislation. The first day of Pyathoe, 1938 (Karen Year
2677), was declared the first Karen New Year.
Initially, the Karen leaders had been divided over the best day for the New Year to fall on. Three
alternatives were put forward.
1. The same day as the Roman calendar.
2. The date when (the missionary) Dr. Judson first arrived in Burma.
3. The first day of Pyathoe.
The options were discussed and the matter resolved. The first alternative has global significance,
and it was felt that a distinctive date for the Karen New Year would be more appropriate. As for the
second alternative,Dr. Judson was a Christian missionary, so this date would be suitable for Christians,
but not Karens of other religions. The first day of Pyathoe was best.

Karen National Flag
Our Flag represents dignity for all Karen people. Red is for bravery; White is for purity; and blue is
for loyalty. In the corner there is a “Klo,” a sacred Karen drum. We use this drum on special occasions
like weddings, New Year’s Day and funerals. The Klo is made of metal, tin or gold and only the
community leaders strike it.
Additionally the month of Pyathoe is special for Karen cultural solidarity, given the following
reasons:
1. Although Karens have different names for Pyathoe (Sgaw Karens call itTh’lay and for
Pwo Karens, Htike Kauk Po) the first of each of these monthsfalls onexactly the same
date.
2. The rice harvest is completed in the period leading to Pyathoe, andaccording to Karen
traditional religious practice, there must be a celebration for consumption of the new
crop. It is also the time to divine the date for commencement of the next crop. Typically,
this is also when new houses are constructed, and the completion of these must be
celebrated.
3. The first of Pyathoe is not a distinct festival for any religious group,so it is a day that is
acceptable to all Karen people. For these reasons, on the first of Pyathoe annually, we
celebrate the Karen New Year.

A Tribute to the Older Members of Our Karen Community
Generally, the New Year is the day that marks the beginning of a brand new year. It is about saying
farewell to the year in passing and welcoming the new. Many cultures around the world celebrate
and embrace this special day in their own manner. For the Karen people, the time of the New Year
significantly marks the end of the Harvest season, a time when we are finally blessed with new
crops – new beginnings.
Since it all began, the New Year was a time for the community to gather as one, and share these
crops in the form of a festival or a Thanksgiving ceremony. In these ceremonies, there was much
emphasis placed on the positions and value of the elders in the community - where they were paid
much respect. Accordingly it was believed that the blessings of the elders for all future tasks were
significant and ideal for that coming year to be of great success. In some ceremonies, the elders’
were given the first fruits, and/or bathed and dressed in new garments by the grandchildren.
Here, in this country we have now had the opportunity to call home - Australia we take the time to
truly reflect on our traditional ways and beliefs, and endeavor to maintain the practice of the
elders’ with much respect and integrity.
In this festive time of the Karen New year, we look to these elders as iconic pioneers of our Australian
Karen community. It is with the guidance, support, and encouragement of these special members
of our community, that we as a whole can live a fulfilling new life here. We thank the elders, and
appreciate all that they do.

Burma Public Talk
Burmese activist, Naw K’nyaw Paw, visited Australia in May at the invitation of Union Aid Abroad-
APHEDA. A public talk with Naw K’nyaw Paw was hosted to allow Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA sup-
porters and the general public to meet this inspiring young Burmese woman on 11 May 2011; in the
Labor Council Building of Sydney.
This was a great opportunity to hear about the cur-
rent situation in Eastern Burma; why the Australian
Government should be supporting cross-border aid;
and the extraordinary work of the Karen Women's
Organisation.
Naw K'nyaw Paw is 30 years old. She was born in
Thailand after her parents fled from their village in
Burma to the Thai border area in the late 1970s. They
were forced from their home as a consequence of
the Burmese military regime's harsh 'four-cuts'
strategy. Naw K'nyaw Paw grew up in a refugee
camp. This is also where she lived until she finished
her high school education.
In 1999, K'nyaw Paw started working for the Karen Women Organization (KWO) as a leadership
trainer, and later worked on human rights and democracy education. She is now a coordinator at the
KWO's "Emerging Leaders School".
K'nyaw Paw also works as a member of the KWO advocacy team. Through this work she has travelled
to Geneva and New York, attending meetings with the UN Human Rights Council, the Commission
on the Status of Women (CSW) and the United Nations Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues
(UNPFII).
K'nyaw Paw also travelled to the USA to meet with the US Government, Congressmen, Senators and
Laura Bush in order to raise issues about refugees, IDPs and women. K'nyaw Paw has also had
meetings with the Canadian Parliament Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to
discuss cross-border humanitarian aid issues.
At the KWO Congress, held in 2008, K'nyaw Paw was appointed as a KWO Executive Committee
Member, and she currently holds the position of KWO Education Program Coordinator.
K'nyaw Paw's vision:
"I would like to see all Karen women being empowered so we can all make our own decisions related
to our lives and our communities. I also want to see women being able to participate in political
decision making processes, at the community and national levels everywhere."===

“The New Year celebration allows us to reflect
“I’m also amazed that the Karen community
on all our memories of the year which passed
inside Burma continue to resist the military
by, and hope for new things in the coming year;
dictatorship in the ways that they do. After
but the Karen people in our homeland have had
decades of oppression and offensives and
