This year’s 2011 START executive team invites you to come to a conference that will not soon
be forgotten...

START (Students: The Active Risk Takers) is a fantastic one of a kind conference held in the
Peel region every year for high school students. It is a dynamic two-day experience where you'll
meet fantastic people, learn useful leadership skills, and have a whole ton of fun! In short, this is
one of those times when you get to kick back, relax, and have an awesome time!

What is START?
Going into its 14th year as a conference, START continues to be run by students, for students.
During these two exciting days of the conference, Delegates will listen and learn from
informative and inspiring guest speakers as well as their peers, enjoy a wicked dance, participate
in eye-opening discussions with fellow students, learn about leadership opportunities in their
community, make lots of new friends, and all while having the time of their lives! To top it all
off, Delegates will receive a t-shirt and a special Delegate package, we will provide meals and
snacks (and trust us, the food is awesome!).

Who can go to START?
If you are a high school student in the Region of Peel, then you are eligible to be a Delegate at the
START Conference. We welcome all students grades 9-12. We especially encourage grade 9-
11 students with little conference experience to apply as Delegates so that they can continue
attending the START leadership conference for years to come and continue building up their
leadership abilities.

When is the Conference?
Mark November 18th -19th, 2011 on your calendar! The conference will be held at Turner
Fenton Secondary School. Delegates will not have to miss school on the 18th! . Registration is
from 3:30-4:45 pm on Friday, the 18th. Delegates must be picked up by their parents at 8:45 pm
on Saturday night.

Since the first START Conference, hundreds of students like you have benefited from their
participation in this incredible opportunity. Students come into START, and leaders leave the
conference. You will learn valuable skills and leadership qualities that you could not learn
anywhere else, all while have an amazing time and making memories that will last a lifetime.
START is a life changing experience for everybody who attends it. So make the decision, take
the initiative to become a better, more confident leader!
There is a $50 fee for all Delegates, which covers all meals and snacks, a t-shirt, manual, and all
conference activities. This fee may be paid by cheque, payable to Turner Fenton S. S - START
2011. Although START is organized by students, it is fully supervised by Peel teachers, and
there will also be a student security team on duty at all times. The student-teacher ratio is about
20:1. All doors to the school will remain locked, and all conference activities will take place
inside the South Hall of Turner Fenton Campus. Safety is of primary importance to all of us.

Attached to this letter is a registration form, a list of what you’ll need to bring to the conference,
and an outline of our conference rules. To register, just fill out the form (pages 3,4 & 6) and mail
it, with your registration fee, to START c/o Turner Fenton Secondary School. Space is limited
and any incomplete or late applications will not receive first consideration, so be sure to get
yours in on time! If you have any questions, feel free to fax them to START c/o Turner Fenton S.

Spots will be awarded to complete and acceptable applications on a first-come first serve basis.
Please note: if you are a returning delegate, and ultimate capacity is reached, preference will be
given to first-time delegates.

WHAT TO BRING
   Casual clothes for 2 days and 1 night
         o (Comfortable clothes- it is MANDATORY to wear your conference shirt the entire time you
             are at the conference)
   Toiletries and personal items (toothbrush, towel, soap, etc)
   Comfortable indoor shoes.
   Sleeping bag and pillow
   Sleeping mat or foam pad (optional, but recommended)
   Bathing suit (for showers, optional)
   Any appropriate items related to this year’s theme, START of the Ages! (Think ancient times,
    including Egypt, Rome, China, Greece, India, etc!)

WHAT NOT TO BRING
   Walkmans, Discmans, I-pods, MP3, cell phone etc.
        o If any of these items are found, they will be confiscated and returned at the end of the
             conference. Don’t take the chance of having expensive items stolen… DON’T BRING
             THEM!!!
   Weapons of any kind
   Non-prescription drugs
   Alcohol or cigarettes
   T-shirts from other conferences

Conference Rules (Very Important, READ CAREFULLY!)
   1. Use of alcohol, non-prescription drugs, or smoking will NOT be permitted during the conference.
   2. Sexual activity of any kind will not be permitted during the conference.
   3. Delegates will not be allowed to leave the premises of the START Conference unless permitted to
       do so by the appropriate START Executive member and Staff chaperone. The Delegate must have
       a note from their parent or guardian.
   4. Identification tags must be worn at ALL times, as well as t-shirts.
   5. After “lights out” Delegates must remain in their designated sleeping areas unless asked to leave
       by a START organizer (i.e. in case of an emergency). Male and female Delegates will have
       separate sleeping areas.
   6. No open flame will be permitted (candles, incense, lighters, etc).
   7. Delegates must act and dress in an appropriate, respectful, and courteous manner.
   8. No profanity will be allowed.
   9. No perfume, sprays, and/or cologne shall be used due to allergies.
   * Delegates must have fun.

Any Delegates found breaking the above rules (*except this one) or any federal, provincial, or municipal
laws will immediately be removed from the conference and sent home at their own expense. Guardians and
authorities will be notified where appropriate. Feel free to bring whatever items you feel necessary (within
the rules) but be aware that Turner Fenton Secondary School, the Peel District School Board, and the
START Conference Executive will not be held responsible for any lost or damaged items.
