17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
GIFT Thoughts for the Week
In today’s gospel, Jesus gives us an outline for praying—communicating
with our creator to express our respect, gratitude and needs. We are assured
that we will receive an answer. We are not promised that we will always
receive what we think we want.
Question: What is my favorite way to pray?
Growing In Faith Together
Action: Pray. (How? Pay attention to the prayers during mass and what
Generations of Faith they are really saying. Have a conversation with God. Read scripture and
let it speak to you.)
Page 2 July 25, 2010
Dear Parishioners,
The first reading and gospel usually have similar themes, today being no
exception as we heard about Abraham’s conversation with God in the first
reading, and Jesus teaching His disciples how to talk with God in prayer.
Part of our liturgy which ties in with both the first reading and gospel is
often neglected by preachers of the Word, including yours truly—the
Responsorial Psalm—even though, by our singing, it plays a prominent
part in our liturgy. Today’s Responsorial Psalm, “Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered
me,” is from Psalm 138. Part of that Psalm reads as follows, “When I called you answered me; you
built up strength within me.”
We pray for many things, recovery of health, employment and safety for our military personnel who
are often in harm’s way. Let’s not forget to include in our prayers to our caring God to ask for
strength when our prayers are not answered right away or in the way we wanted. Jesus said that
parents know how to give good things to their children. He did not mention that parents always give
to their children what they think they want. It is the same with God. However, just as we believe
that God gave strength to His Son when He lived with us, died for us and rose to new life, so let us
believe that He will do the same for us.
In the Word,
P.S. Speaking of giving and receiving, I want to give my very sincere appreciation to all who made
my birthday celebration last weekend a truly memorable event. Many thanks to Jerry and Patti
Crimer for their leadership in planning parties at both BD’s Mongolian Grill last Saturday and the
hospitality after last Sunday’s 10:00 mass. I’m also very grateful for all who provided such delicious
sweets and snacks after mass. I will always be very grateful to God for all the love and support
which I have received from Him through all of you.

to encourage life-long learning in all generations of parishioners for the last 6 years. Each year has had a particular
learning focus, one year it was the Liturgical Calendar, last year we focused on the Seven Core Values of Catholic
Social Teaching, and this year the Core Team leaders have chosen the parish theme of “Living our Faith ~ Led by the
Spirit”. We will explore the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and learn ways to recognize how the Holy Spirit is active in
our daily lives and in everything we do.
For a beginning, the above logo was designed. The flame is shades of reds to yellows, representing the gifts of the
Holy Spirit. The large swirls are blue, symbolizing the waters of our baptism when we first receive the Holy Spirit. The
vine logo was designed by Chris B in the early days of GIFT, and this year has seven leaves, one for each Gift.
