practical's and lectures, and also holds copies of all the signs and symbols taught on the course.

Diggin It!
Since launching the Diggin‘ It Devonport Park project in January 2011, The Saturday Family
Gardening Club has been a great success.

Disabled young people from across the city have taken part in a number of activities, including seed
sowing, preparing a vegetable patch, fire lighting, decorating plant pots and growing healthy
vegetables ready for a spring harvest.

Development of the exciting forest school area is well underway, with the construction of a wooden
shelter. The Family Gardening Club will be designing a clay oven to site under the shelter, enabling
us to cook yummy pizzas, bread, quiches and roast all outdoors.
On Friday 4th March 2011 we will be working with a specialist, who will run a course on how to build
the clay oven. This will be a fun and interactive course, which will be available to members of the
public at a cost of £15 per person. Spaces are very limited and will be allocated on a first come first
served basis.
We also have volunteering opportunities within the project developing areas such as the vegetable
garden, greenhouse, wildlife and secret gardens. The opportunity to work with groups may also exist,
depending on experience and CRB checks. You can gain recognition for your volunteering hours and
a record of tasks/achievements completed. This is a great opportunity for personal development,
CV‘s or working towards awards/qualifications.

If you are interested in the clay oven course or volunteering then please contact
kdavy@routeways.org.uk for more details.

Due to the success of the Saturday Family Gardening Club, we are creating a second group, to run
on alternating weekends. If you know a disabled young person, who might benefit from taking part in
horticultural activities (as well as other outdoor based activities) with the support of a family member
or 1:1 worker, then please contact cwilshire@routeways.org.uk for more information.

Inclusive Breaks - with a twist...
International Sport and Dance
Barefoot and Plymouth Sports Academy have been working in partnership to provide sports and
dance activities during the school holidays for young people across the city following 12 successful
days during the summer. Aimed at 5-16 year olds with the idea of getting kids moving, the Interna-
tional Sport and Dance days have been attended by over 500 young people.

Staff have been trained in inclusion and young people with disabilities will be supported, however
parents may wish to discuss individual needs with staff prior to the event, in the past parents and
carers have stayed for a short time, while the child/young person become comfortable. However
if parents wish to stay this is fine too!

The themed days have included sports and dance from America, New Zealand, Ireland, Brazil,
Australia and South Africa. During the days participants are able to improve their sporting
knowledge, skills and teamwork whilst having lots of fun. Young people also stand to the countr y‘s
national anthem and perform their new-found skills to an audience of family and friends.

Activities during half-term are planned for the 21st,22nd and 23rd February. These will be themed
on the Six Nations - venue TBC. The cost to attend is £8 per child per day or £20 if attending all
days. For further information or to book a place please contact Barefoot or Dan Pengelly at
Plymouth Sports Academy on 07515 416304 or email plymouthsportsacademy@yahoo.com

Sailing For Disabled Children on the 100 year old Cornubia…
CORNUBIA is a hundred years old and been fully rebuilt incorporating modern safety features.
Her sturdy 30 tons provide the ideal stable environment for the young people and their carers to
experience sailing and the local marine environment. Three certificated sailors run the boat. The
balance of carers to children depends upon levels of disability, the maximum party size being eight
persons total. Siblings and enablers are most welcome and costs are offered on a sliding scale.

CORNUBIA is coded by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Day sailing in the pilot cutter,
CORNUBIA around Plymouth Sound and adjacent rivers and estuaries offers disabled youngsters
challenging opportunities to increase their self confidence and to step outside the comfort zone.
No sailing experience is necessary. As one teacher/carer of a severely autistic child with visual
problems put it: "she absolutely revelled in the elements of wind, sail noise, salty air and the
sounds of Plymouth Sound and Estuary - a full-on sensory experience to beat anything we could
provide on shore."

This is how a typical trip goes.
Before leaving the marina the crew tell the young people about safety on board, what is likely to
happen, and help them fit their lifejackets.
They motor upriver past the dockyard to the road and rail bridges at Saltash. After setting the sails
they sail downriver past Drake's Island, with lunch under way, before anchoring in Cawsand Bay.
There they might collect plankton for microscopic examination.
Once the anchor is up, the voyage continues alongside the Breakwater, and past Jennycliff. Off
the Hoe the crew drop the sails to motor back to the marina.
While at anchor, or back alongside, the young people can explore the marine environment

Delve into Plymouth Music Zone's Bag of Tricks
Plymouth Music Zone, as Area Leader host of Devon Sing Up, is joining forces with Wren Music,
Pathfields and Woodlands SEN schools to invite SEN Teachers and support staff in schools to a
day‘s music training, (with thanks also to Woodlands Learning Community). Called the ―Bag of
Tricks‖, the day will furnish all participants with a creative music making toolkit. If you‘re struggling
to find new ideas in the classroom, need a confidence boost when it comes to teaching music or
think you‘ve got some great ideas to add to our Bag of Tricks then this course is for you. The day
will be jam packed with fun, inspirational ideas and practical, creative approaches to music in the
classroom and will cover a range of repertoire, skill-sharing, technology tips and planning. We‘re
running the same day twice between 9.30am -4pm so you can attend either the first day on Friday
March 18th at Woodlands Special School, Plymouth, or alternatively, the second on Friday March
25th at Pathfields Special School, Barnstaple. There are limited places on each day, so please book
as soon as possible. The cost per person is £150, which includes free original resources for you to
take back and use with your students, as well as a tasty buffet lunch. To register your interest and
for further details, please contact bernie@plymouthmusiczone.org.uk or call 01752 213690 .
