					          HILLFIELD STRATHALLAN COLLEGE - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

                 PPL10 - Healthy Active Living Education – Grade 9

Course Outline :
This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities
that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and
principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence and safety and
injury prevention. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use
and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed
to develop goal setting, communication and social skills.

Physical Education – General Expectations

DRESS:
- You are expected to conform to required College dress code. This is clearly outlined in the
College Handbook (Grey HSC t-shirt or House shirt only, Green or purple shorts only, running
shoes and white socks –outside only - grey HSC jogging pants, HSC track suit and HSC
sweatshirt.)
- Should you not have your gym kit on a given day you will be docked marks (0.5% each time)
- On your third offence, your parents will be emailed. If there is a forth offence you will be asked
to visit the Campus Store immediately to purchase the necessary equipment. Any subsequent
offence will result in detentions.
- NO JEWELRY or MP3 Players (lock valuables in your locker and bring everything out of the change
room).

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is compulsory (both in the gym and in the health classroom).
- It is also expected that you will arrive to class on time. Marks will be deducted for lateness
(0.5% each time).
-If a student is feeling ill or is injured they must produce a note from their parents/nurse in order
to avoid penalty. Students will be asked to be a part of class in alternative ways when injured or
ill (i.e. score keeping, referees, set-up or modified activity).

3 STRIKE RULE: If a student is late 3 times they will serve an after school detention on the 3
offence. (Consequences will progress for repeat offenses)

TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: It is important that you adhere to due dates for assignments and
required readings(see additional sheet). You must expect an academic penalty if you are late
with your work. The penalty will be 5% per day, up to a max of 20%. After this the assignment
will no longer be accepted and the student will have to do an alternative assignment. If you miss
a test or an evaluation, it is up to you to make arrangements to complete your evaluation.

NOTEBOOK & TEXTBOOK: It is REQUIRED that you purchase a workbook and a textbook.
“Healthy Active Living” text book and – Student Activity Handbook 9. You may keep both at
home in order to complete the assigned required readings. As well, you will need to submit
completed workbook tasks throughout the year. In addition, at times you will be instructed to
bring your workbook and textbook to class with you (e.g. for health units). Both books are
available in the campus store.
