Glendale Community College – Program Review - Student Support Services – 2006
Overview of the Program
1. Please give an overview of your program.
The Glendale Community College Alumni Association was established in 1988 as an
organization of people who desire to serve and support the college. The association has more than
7,000 names on its mailing list, hosts major social events during the year, and publishes a
newsletter.
The purpose of the alumni association is to develop stronger relationships between friends
and former students and to support and promote the goals, activities, and interests of the college.
The alumni association provides the vehicle to stimulate this support and to keep the community,
alumni, and friends of Glendale Community College aware and involved. There is a growing pride
in being a part of the Glendale Community College family of supporters and in giving something
back to the college which has given so much to them.

Demographic Information
Educational Information
The Alumni Association is comprised of all kinds of former students and friends of the
college. Most members join because of their love for the college and their desire to both stay
involved and keep informed. This is the main criterion for membership, and the
demographic make-up of the association reflects the demographics of the past years of the
college. As an organization, the Alumni Association does not gather demographic
information (other than dates of attendance).
There is a significant age factor (probably due to available time and financial
resources), which seems to possibly explain the lack of younger participation. The
association is however working on getting younger alumni to get involved and participate.
Alumni Membership is open to all those who wish to join and show their support for
the college. No educational requirement is articulated, and membership varies from
community members who have never attended, to current students, to faculty members of the
college. The various academic backgrounds and experiences of the members help contribute
to the diversity of the association.

Although the organization does not have any real full-time employees who have the
option to serve on several campus governance committees, the organization does have a
group of volunteers who serve (and have served) on several different committees. Current
Executive Board members (other than Barbara Jordan and Antonino Patti) have served (or
still do) on wide range of committees and organization boards, such as: CSEA, ASGCC, The
GCCD Board of Trustees (Student Trustee), International Students, Campus Executive,
Student Affairs, Student Services, Campus Development, Budget, and many others.

6.03 Program Plans
Develop a Five Year Plan which includes operations, staffing and facilities. Try to be as specific as
possible about what year you hope to accomplish each goal, as well as what you need to do to attain
that goal. You should also include any suggestions for improvement.
Within the next five years, the Alumni Association would like to accomplish
several goals. Its first priority is to increase membership and become a stronger
organization, both in numbers and influence. Once this goal starts to be realized, the
Association‟s goals of increasing membership benefits and, most importantly, increasing
the benefits contributed to the campus and its students will be within reach.
To achieve its first goal, the organization needs to improve its public relations, and
its members need to promote the organization as much as possible. Membership drives
(such as promoting the organization during graduation) and word-to-mouth conversations
have been the methods used in the past. The organization would like to maintain such a
strategy, but to also include more events and other approaches. This year, the organization
has sent out promotional newsletters to the community and the campus, for example.
The next goals are about benefits, both to the members and to the community. In an
attempt to increase membership, the organization sets out more goals on increasing the
benefits associated with membership. As the benefits increase, prospective members find
more and more reasons to join that they find personally appealing. For example, the
association this year has managed to increase membership benefits to include discounts at
the on campus bookstore, discounts on community services education, discounts on a local
summer childcare program, etc. All of these benefits (along with others, such as the use of
the campus library and fitness center) have been made possible thanks to the managers of
the programs themselves. This shows how important it is for the organization to have a
good and highly regarded reputation throughout the campus community.
The last goal, and most certainly the most important one, is the association‟s desire
to increase its influence on campus, and to become an important part of Glendale
Community College as a promoter of the school and a partner of the college in its
achievement of its mission. The organization would like to help the campus and its
students, and most of the group‟s members have an honest desire to benefit the college.
Ideally, the organization could be a key player in the mentorship of students and a good
aide to the Foundation in its efforts to raise funds for the college. Efforts such as these
require an organization with a significant amount of members, information sharing, and
positive campus recognition.
In order to achieve these goals however, the organization does need some
infrastructure and support. Due to a significant lack of space, it is hard to maintain the
organization and execute the task set out be the group in an efficient manner. The other
issue is the lack of a consistent management structure to help with the completion of tasks.
Because the organization is comprised of volunteers, it is hard to keep such a cohesive
management team when time and availability are limited. A permanent employee would
help maintain and manage the daily business of the organization and keep the structure of
the organization intact. Without such a person, the group has seen many changes in
leadership, structure, and strength in the past years.

7.00 Program Effectiveness
Instructions: Review and analyze any anecdotal or observational information you have gathered
regarding the membership and recipients of your program.
1. Based on the data provided, how does the program contribute to access, retention and success?
N/A
2. How can this program effectively increase its contribution to access, retention, and success?
N/A
3. Should additional goals be written addressing the data? N/A
Yes No
(List any goals in the Summary.)
Membership in the Alumni Association tends to fluctuate significantly each year,
probably due to the constant changes in leadership and management style. If the program
were to have a better working environment and a regular full-time or part-time employee,
maintaining the organization and keeping its growth at a steady rate would be an easier task
The Program currently does not have the strength, numbers, and organization to be
able to directly affect students. The organization however is working hard to build a solid
foundation for the association, and to increase the benefits that the organization will bring to
the students and the campus.
With a solid group of energetic and dedicated alumni, the association‟s members can
mentor and advise new, current, and former students on how to succeed in their education
goals, in their careers, and in their overall lives.
