Geelong City Cricket Club July Newsletter 2011
Dude, where’s my kit bag?
Welcome one and all to the commencement of cricket season 2011/12. Sure it’s still
freezing outside but there’s no better way to get warm than a spot of shadow batting in the
mirror on a chilly morn. It’s time to get up in the cupboard or under the bed, seek out your
cricket kit and get primed for pre-season training.
Preseason Training Dates Announced.
Please see attached the list of training dates for indoor sessions at Barwon Valley Activity
Centre and additional outdoor fitness sessions to be held at Eastern Beach.
It should be noted that club coach Graeme Beaumont and 1 st XI Captain Adam Pitts will be
away overseas during parts of August and September. The Sharks have secured current
Geelong Cricket Club stars (and former Geelong City players) Tom Elliot and Travis Agg to
provide specialist coaching during several of the indoor preseason sessions.
Tom (Vice Captain of the Geelong CC 1st XI last season) and Travis (Current Assistant Coach
of the Geelong CC) bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience from VCA ranks.
All players are encouraged to get to training to take advantage of the high quality coaching
available, hone your technique early and be ready to hit the ground running come Round 1
of the season.
Coach’s message from Graeme Beaumont.
I am really looking forward to the coming season and working with Adam and all the teams
to get our Club back into GCA Division 1 by being the benchmark of the GCA Division 2
competition. Our challenge this season is greater than the last as we have seen that one
successful season does not guarantee you a place in Division 1 – we have to be the
benchmark every week and every season.
There is a positive feel around the club following last year’s success and the development
we saw in a number of our players and teams. If we build on this through the work we do at
training, on game days and around the club this 2011/2012 season will be another great
one.
Cheers, Graeme

Pre-season BBQ at Eastern Gardens.
The Geelong City Cricket Club encourages all players and their family members to get down
to the Eastern Gardens on Sunday 31st July for a BBQ to enjoy a catch-up and a snag or two.
For any players interested there will be a social soccer match held at Eastern Gardens pitch
5 between 11am-12noon. We will then be migrating to the undercover BBQ area at the
north side of Eastern Park near the Botanic Gardens (see map on the club website).
Bunnings BBQ fund raiser for the GCCC Junior section.
The Geelong City CC junior section will be running a BBQ at Waurn Ponds Bunnings store on
Sunday 31 July between 9am-4pm. Trevor Elliot will be on the tongs and encourages you to
get down and purchase one of his snagtacular morsels should you be in the vicinity.
If you’re able to help out on the day please contact Trevor on 0439 118 311.
New English Import.
Geelong City will once again be welcoming an overseas player to the fold for the coming
2011/2012 season. Liam Andrews (nickname Roy), a left hand batsman and left arm spin
bowler from Clifton Village Cricket Club in the Nottinghamshire Premier League will be
joining the Sharks.
Liam resides in world famous Gainsborough, Lincolnshire (the G-town of the Northern
hemisphere) and has made the trip down under on two previous occasions having played
the 2005/6 summer with Toombull District CC in Brisbane and the 2008/9 season with
Mildura Settlers CC.
Liam confesses to be a sports enthusiast, he follows English football, rugby league and
enjoys the odd round of golf. Liam listed his sporting hero’s as Muhammad Ali and Spiro
Malekelis and noted he had the opportunity to be a net bowler during the last T20 world
cup in England. He named Chris Gayle as the toughest batsman he bowled to, a lefthander
who’s explosive capabilities only marginally out shine City’s own Rossi Cameron.
Geelong City Cricket Club thanks the following sponsors for their ongoing support…
