Description

Food is a necessary commodity for all persons - both for sustenance necessary to maintain life and for

the social facets of life associated with meals. The foods eaten and the eating (or meal or dining)

practices of cultures are very much integrated into the overall heritage of the culture. Different cultures

and/or different ethnic groups have traditional foods and eating practices associated with them. The

United States has been referred to as a melting pot of many different cultures which have been, and are

being, fused together to form the American culture. Such fusion includes the fusion of foods, flavors,

and eating practices.

This course will focus on the exploration of the foods, eating practices, and customs associated with

foods of the different cultures and/or ethnic groups that have become, or are becoming, integral parts of

This class will look carefully at the work of several philosophers from the Americas, Africa and Europe

who address issues of race and racism. Our primary (though by no means exclusive) focus will be on

thinkers from Africa and the African Diaspora, but the concepts we shall be discussing should be

relevant for analysis of race in any context (Asia, South America, Native America). No prior

background in philosophy is necessary, though we will be reading some difficult material as we struggle

with these complex issues. Students should be prepared to work (and think) hard. We shall look

carefully at three important questions:

What is race? Is it a "real" property, which distinguishes certain members of the same species from one

another? Is it a matter of biology? Shared ancestry? Perhaps it is a cultural "construction?" An

ideological tool used to justify European colonials' treatment of indigenous peoples? In the end, we

need to determine what the usefulness of race as a concept might be - should it be an important part of
