HON 400. Portrait of Chicano/a Culture in the US
Description
Food is a necessary commodity for all persons - both for sustenance necessary to maintain life and for
the social facets of life associated with meals. The foods eaten and the eating (or meal or dining)
practices of cultures are very much integrated into the overall heritage of the culture. Different cultures
and/or different ethnic groups have traditional foods and eating practices associated with them. The
United States has been referred to as a melting pot of many different cultures which have been, and are
being, fused together to form the American culture. Such fusion includes the fusion of foods, flavors,
and eating practices.
This course will focus on the exploration of the foods, eating practices, and customs associated with
foods of the different cultures and/or ethnic groups that have become, or are becoming, integral parts of
This class will look carefully at the work of several philosophers from the Americas, Africa and Europe
who address issues of race and racism. Our primary (though by no means exclusive) focus will be on

background in philosophy is necessary, though we will be reading some difficult material as we struggle
with these complex issues. Students should be prepared to work (and think) hard. We shall look
carefully at three important questions:
What is race? Is it a "real" property, which distinguishes certain members of the same species from one
another? Is it a matter of biology? Shared ancestry? Perhaps it is a cultural "construction?" An
ideological tool used to justify European colonials' treatment of indigenous peoples? In the end, we
need to determine what the usefulness of race as a concept might be - should it be an important part of
During the 1960s many minority movements arose in an attempt to gain their fair share of the American
Dream. One of the most significant and intriguing movements was the Chicano Movement and its four
dynamic, articulate leaders: Cesar Chavez, Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, Reies Lopez Tijerina, and Jose
Angel Gutierrez. Although Chavez, Gonzales, Tijerina, and Gutierrez are the best-known figures, there
are other individuals and groups in the movement that were significant catalysts for change.
This seminar will focus on the events leading to protest among Chicanos in the 1960s, read and
This class This class examines the life and times of Abraham Lincoln and his influence. The objectives
include the contours American history and Lincoln’s role in it; the interplay of historical events and
actors, politics and society, and world, national, and regional issues; and the role of race, religion, and
This class examines all the critical aspects affecting Chicano culture and its integration in the United
States - race, gender, religion, ethnicity, spirituality, etc. The class easily meets the requirement that at
