 Maryland State Assessment (MSA) will be given the week of March 16th. Two days will

be spent testing reading and another two days testing math. Testing begins at 8 AM

each day and the testing sessions should last 2- 2.5 hours each day. The MSA is the

measure the state of Maryland uses to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act. The

test is required. Our school has placed first or second among county schools; our county

has placed second or third in the state; and our state has placed first in the nation for

educational excellence. Only with the efforts of the students and the support of the

parents will we be able to maintain such high level standards. Please encourage your

child(ren) to get plenty of rest, plenty of exercise and eat nutritiously especially the week

of the 16th.

 The eighth graders will take the Science MSA starting in late April. More details will

come later. The Algebra I with data classes will take the High School Assessment for

algebra in late May. Details will come.

 The Empty Bowls Banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in the MHS

 The Maryland State Department of Education has announced the schedule of upcoming

offer one to three week residential and non-residential programs with a focus on the arts,

sciences, mathematics, technology, creative writing, world languages and culture,

engineering, law and government, physics, and history. Activities are designed to

academically. Tuition ranges from $150 to $750 and financial assistance is available.

Brochures and applications can be found on the website of the Maryland State

Department of Education at www.marylandpublicschools.org/summercenters.

Applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, April 15, except for Fine Arts Centers,

which have earlier deadlines and may require an audition. For more information, please

contact Stephanie Zenker, Specialist for the Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and

Talented Students, at 410-767-0821.

 Frederick County Public Schools will host a Secondary Literacy Showcase, titled Share

the Love of Literacy, on May 26, 2009, from 5:30 to 7:00, at GTJ High School. This is

an opportunity for students to share their excitement about a book with others via a

project that reflects their understanding and enthusiasm. Projects may be entered in

three categories: writing, multi-media, and performing arts. Language Arts teachers have

the guidelines for students to follow to prepare their projects. We look forward to

displaying some creative and exciting projects from our students.

 Middletown Middle students and staff are committed to reaching those less fortunate.

This year we will make a difference in the lives of starving children in Africa. We have

enlisted the help of the non-profit organization, “Feed My Starving Children” to provide

the food and materials needed to package 100,000 meals at a cost of 17 cents per

serving. Once the monetary goal is met, over 500 students and staff will prepare,

package, and ship these meals to a needy orphanage or village in Africa. Beginning on

February 17th, The SGA, Builder's Club, and Taking Action Against Hunger Club, will

facilitate a school-wide collection through Roundtables and during lunch.

We will show our progress by signifying $5 and $10 donation increments on paper plates.

Each plate reflects 1 or 2 meals a day, for one month, for one child in Africa. They will be

displayed by grade in the cafeteria. Kids can write their names on the plates when

they make a donation of that amount. We will also post a running total on the SGA

bulletin board reflecting our progress and the contributions of the community. Local

businesses and organizations such as: Scouts, 4-H, youth groups, and area churches are

encouraged to partner with us.

 Again this year Frederick County Public Schools is sponsoring a county-wide Science

and Engineering Fair. The fair will be held on March 27-28, 2009. The fair will be split

into two divisions: middle school and high school. Each division will have its own booklet

listing student participants within that division. Student art, appropriate to each division,

decorates the cover of the booklets. The winning designs at each level will be displayed

on the covers of their divisional fairs. In addition, divisional winners and honorable

mentions will be announced on Channel 18 the week following the fair. All winners will

be invited to the awards ceremony on March 28th. Award certificates not distributed at

that time will be sent to the sponsoring teacher at the school. Contest Rules: Contest

runs through Thursday, March 19, 2009. All entries should be black and white, good

quality, and submitted on standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Actual art work is to be no more

than 7 1/2 x 10 inches, allowing at least a half inch border around the entry. All entries

must include the words "28th Annual Frederick County Science and Engineering Fair."

(Please note: past entries have been eliminated due to misspelled words. Check

carefully for spelling errors.) All entries must include artwork depicting a science,

mathematics or engineering theme - combinations of these themes are encouraged. All

entries must be received by the Science Curriculum Specialist, 6-12 (Stacey Adamiak,

Hayward Road Complex) no later than 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2009. Entries

received after this date will not be judged. No entries will be returned. All entries will be

judged by members of the science fair planning committee. All decisions are final.

 Call Your State Leaders and Legislators today. Governor Martin O’Malley has proposed

cutting more than $100 million dollars in education funding in the FY 2010 budget

with additional cuts in other education, children and health programs. This will

significantly affect poorer districts with at-risk students disproportionately. It will also hurt

the efforts of our rising school systems and may jeopardize Maryland's Number One

Ranking in Education Week's 2009 Quality Counts Annual Report! Governor Martin

O’Malley – governor@gov.state.md.us 410) 974-3901; Senate President Thomas “Mike”

Miller – thomas.v.mike.miller@senate.state.md.us (410) 841-3700; House Speaker

Michael Busch – michael.busch@house.state.md.us 410) 841-3800. Tell them that: “I

am a Maryland PTA member from (County, City, Town).” Please tell the

(Governor/Senate President/House Speaker/my legislators) “Do not to change the

Thornton law and to fully fund the education formula, without cuts.” Remember, Our

Schools Need Local. State, Federal Funds!!! The Federal Stimulus Plan is only a

Temporary Solution!
