      Overview            Students will research Historically Black Colleges and understand
                          their impact they had on the freedmen and women and their
                          advancement
Essential Understanding   Students will understand the importance of education as it relates
                          to freed slaves. ( Also some may also make the connection between
                          education and the oppressed in general)

        Day 1                                     Details of the Activity
                          Answer the following questions:
                          Preview Question: What are Historically Black colleges and
                          Universities and Why were they formed? Name one historically
                          Black College. Where are they primarily located and why?

                          Word Sort: Organize the words below into three categories. Label
        each category
        Segregation, Racism, Slavery, Abolition, Freedman’s Bureau, United
        Negro College Fund, American Missionary Association, Morrill Land
        Grant, 13th Amendment, Alcorn State University, Booker T,
        Washington, Tuskegee Institute, Civil War, Fredrick Douglass, Black
        Churches, Historically Black Colleges and Universities

        KW Chart: Create a chart of what you know about historically black
        colleges, and then what you would like to know. (Remind students to
        add preview questions also) Leave room in the What you want to
        know column to answer your questions.

        Reading/Notes: Freedom’s Children Pages 4-5: Small Groups to
        Report Out 1, Why were school started? Name at least three ways
        in which schools were started? Name some organizations involved in
        starting schools. Why was education so important to escaped
        slaves?
        Read as a class A History of the African American People Published
        by Salamander Books Limited Reading pgs 108-111 and take notes

         Why are HBCUs primarily found on the east coast with a high
                      percentage found in the south/

Day 3                         Details of the Activity
            College Recruiter: Students will take on the role of college
                              recruiter for a Historically Black College/University of their
                              choice. They will create brochures and act as recruiters at a
                              mock college fair. Use Rubric.

       Rubric           Mock College Fair are to be held at later date. “Perspective College”
                        It would be nice to have real students but school staff will be fine.
                        They will use the rubrics to judge student work.
