          Hi Samara,

I have been communicating with Laure regarding the list of artwork specs. Unfortunately, some of the information is
simply not available: namely, the weight (She said "heavy") and the dimensions of the largest sections. She wanted to
know when you would be able to meet with her next, and thought it would be helpful for all of you to visit the Greektown
space (where most of the follies are) with a tape measure soon.

Everything is electric, except for a few random ephemera pieces.

Also, regarding the powercords/strips, she mentioned that usually she uses a mix of her own and the galleries. So, for
your budget purposes, she says to assume that she owns about half of the needed cords/strips.

Again, I want to apologize in advance for the forthcoming incomplete spec sheets. I am trying to be as thorough as
possible in the notes section, however, to explain the needs of the pieces.

          Thanks,

          Karen

           Hi Guys,

I talked to Laure last night and she was considering not using the Frog
Kissing booth because it is so large and because it needs a lot of finish
           work.

           See you tomorrow,

we have a meeting at 12 tomorrow, we are meeting in the upper part of the library (where we met today).
some things to think about before the meeting (brought up by the writing mentor):
             * how and why Laure wants her work presented?
             * what's her thought process?
             * what do you think when creating the pieces?
             * how we create connections with her art and installations?

*handout of layouts and which pieces are where (the sections of gallery: decker, meyerhoff, ramp, etc)

             Neil said:
             * need to locate the ball of string (it was sold)

             in accordance with the hive:
             * what are the trade offs of displaying that is unique with each layout?
             * how are the designs determining what is being displayed?
             * more content in the hive as an area
             * the collections are important- they're rich (she is a real consumer)
(jonathan create an aerial of the new hive concept, maybe even have your alternative idea that has the funny walls that
             dont match in the presentation)

             * integrating tvs to walls?
             * play pal- more psychological
             * how much of the curatorial list is in blue print? (in other words, how much exists and where is it)
             * did someone talk to Lidell about crane operators? (jonathan?)
             * want to add that cost of operator to budget

             bozo:
             * thinks there was brakets on pole and where cut off
             * anticipating that it is more complicated than Laure thinking
             * most complicated piece because outdoors

*there is no shortage of art

             Doris:
             * likes the wall paper tables, how to attach to the tables?
             * will doris allow? who is in charge of the table appearance?

RE: notes from today...... and tomorrow........to think about.............. http://mail.mica.edu/exchange/srosen/Inbox/RE:%20notes%20...

             * run a test on a table, before doing all tables
             what he would do:
large print of wallpaper, contact paper around it or gaf (?) tape (theatre tape that is matte black, fabric like and better than
duct, more cabaret like), clear table cloth on top or vellum

             * Neil will be around in Jan, he wont be going to NYC
             * how are we doing with curtain -for dolly/ ball of string
             * can't project on black- sucks the light from projector, what is typically done is that it is projected in dark room with
black background in video or surrounding video
             * there is so much physical matter (exhibitions has its work cut out for them. this is the easy part)

            Hey X team,

Check it out. We need to prepare a few things for Wednesday, and a few things to get started on. Apologies for the length
            of this email.

            Wed=
Maria, could you please get the label stuff, if you haven't already.

Samara, spend some time with the Doris Concept page, clean it up. Perhaps print something to show this Doris guy.

All, Spend time combing the wiki. Read the meeting notes, add what you can. Maybe this is helpful, maybe not. Spend
time with all of the concepts. look for the over looked or know info that has been discovered and not added. Think about
how we can answer what we don't know yet and wikify it.

ALL, Think about the HIVE! try to weight out the original and the open space one that Gerald likes. Whats good about
them? How do they change the presentation of the concept? Think about how we should present it to the class. So far I'm
thinking about just opening it with the different hive designs, and passing it off for the class and really curatorial to
discuss the content. We will spend at least ten minutes choosing a hive, weighing them, and spend the rest of the time
plugging and placing content as a class. This is an importnt element to our class vision of the exhibition.

Wednesday 1:30pm Meeting with the Cafe Doris owner guy, meet in Cafe Doris
Wednesday 3pm meet with Curatorial and Education to discuss exhibition content, programs and hive issues to
            supplement our in class workshop.

            Saturday and the Future=
All, read the notes for what is due on the 19th. Think about how you personally want to be involved for install. Think
about what resources you have at home or don't have over break... for example I cant travel with my PC so i wont have
Illustrator to create the vinyl files. Figure out the date you can be back, and think about how you want to experience the
install. I am adding a final 12/19 Kill list of Dates and duties on the wiki. I might not call it that though...
Be ready for a walk through, Sat 13 (next week) 4-6 gallery walk through with Laure, Gerald, Neil, etc. put in gerald's
terms "to nail everything down" (Mandatory)

Paul, Could you design the catalog display box, two boxes are needed. think simple, elegant, construction costs, and easy.
The catalog are 12"x9" and likely an 1/8" to 1/4" thick. I imagine that there would need to be room for 60-100 at a time.

We will talk about this more as a team.

            You guys are badasses-
            love Jonathan

I just realized that I could give Neil a call tomorrow morn, or do you think that is too late, and would you like to be
            included in the conversation?
attached is the spec form (technical wise) for the pieces, I am thinking about recreating this to include information on the
individual pieces with what needs to be prepared before installation (such as repairs) and during installation. I haven't
combed the wiki yet, I am planning on doing this tonight after my class gets out, so around 7/8. You are welcome to
contribute somehow, if you want to since you are also creating a spec chart (I am not sure what you have on yours).

These are some of the things that we need from other teams to give to exhibitions:
label/wall text from curatorial/education I sent an email asking it by tues morn (is that an ok time? or too late?)
            type faces from gd
graphics from gd- if on vinyl, contact paper, paint (bee patterns, the bee, nose, man icons)
final catalogue size from gd, in order to figure out how to display them
tech av specs for pieces from curatorial/catherine/laure (im hoping to send the chart to them this evening, and asking
them to give it to us tues night, is that not enough time?)
            misc textures, paint, decoupage
size of ed event handout and hive handout from education
misc specs of pieces from curatorial/laure/catherine

is there any other items that we need to give to the exhibitions department that other teams would be responsible for?
also, what dates should most of this be due? I think the due dates should be before class on wed so we can look over
everything and correct things and make sure everything is filled out. I will send out an email to all the applicable teams to
do lists for us, so please let me know of other things we need and due dates by tonight at 7pm.

Looks like its there. Some may move about. All we can so is see and prepare pedestals and plinths for the works. I would
just nudge them to work on the written content, get an update? Ask them which works on the list need pedestals or have
           been shown on pedestals before.

I am not sure how to respond to this comment about the hive. I feel that their team isn't moving any further, at most it has
moved a baby step. It seems that most of the pieces they say that are in the hive are going to be scattered in the gallery
space, but I don't think she realizes that. What specifically do you want them to consider in regards to the hive, which
they cannot answer by saying "its on the wiki under our hive section etc."?

           Hi Samara,

I'll bring everything I can to class. A quick response for the Hive piece:
this is something that will come together as we're putting things up, most
likely. The current list of what we know for sure will be in the Hive is on
the wiki on the Master List of Artwork on the main page, all of the "bits of
pieces" shall we say are pretty set. The main parts that remain a question
right now are additional collections of Laure's--she and Gerald are going to
go through her things and dig some stuff up this weekend. I'll keep everyone
           posted!

I think 11 x 17 looks too "formally" long. Its like the portion of legal size right? Would it be a printout mounted to a
board? taped to the wall? Decoupaged to the wall? (not a good idea) the 8.5 x 11 could be plastic protected for example,
ya know? It solves itself. I see it as somthing bigger, maybe 18x24 or 18x18, with text printed to it, mounted on stiff
board, neatly floated on the wall. simple typeface same as titles. It mentions the Exhibition statement and curatorial
statement give the EDS class some credit, Gerorge Cicsle and Glenn dog some cred. We all need to get some street cred
          from all this work.
Im think it should be located by the Marquee walls, both Decker and Meyerhoff. CT writes this shit right? Has Karen
          responded?

          Y'all.

Ok so the text panel that holds the intro statement/context for the exhibit. I just need to let Lydia know if there are any
size restrictions for that according to our wall layout plan. I told her I didnt think there are, as I am sure it willbe a
reasonable size (11x17?). If this is incorrect, feel free to correct me.

          Thanks.

           Hi Samara,

I just met with Gerald to discuss some of the "to do" items identified in class last week. He wanted
to make sure that you or someone from the X team have worked out the following, related to the
           Doris activation:

I know you guys met with Peter Nobel, but have you also met with the staff who actually work in
Cafe Doris to let them know what will be happening? If not, Gerald reccomended you meet with
Libby (I think the manager) to make sure that they Cafe Doris workers know not to clear things off
           the tables, etc.

If we do use the popcorn machine, also make sure to clear that with Cafe Doris staff (for use
outside of their food prep area) and make sure someone who knows how to operate the machine is
           there to supervise its usage.

Equipment requests: Gerald is unaware of any equipment requests for the movie element. Please
include any monitor/tv/projector needs in your equipment list to the Exhibitions Department to
           make sure they're available.

The Curatorial Team will have all "did you know?" factoids to you by January 15th. If this is too
late, please let me know ASAP so I can communicate this to my team.

Thanks and have a happy break!

           Lydia

Hello Café Doris Activation team (and all of the graphic design team, since you have yet to identify a person to
           be involved in this),

My input on the issues brought up by Samara are below in ALL CAPS.

Lydia met with Gerald to discuss some of the "to do" items identified in class last week. He wanted to make
sure that you or someone from the X team have worked out the following, related to the Doris activation:

food prep area) and make sure someone who knows how to operate the machine is there to supervise its
usage. WAS A POPCORN MACHINE IN THE ESTIMATED BUDGET THE X TEAM SUBMITTED FOR THE
FRIENDS OF EDS FUNDING REQUEST? THIS SEEMS LIKE IT STILL HAS A LOT OF LOOSE ENDS THAT
           NEED TO BE RESEARCHED.

Equipment requests: Gerald is unaware of any equipment requests for the movie element. Please include any
monitor/tv/projector needs in your equipment list to the Exhibitions Department to make sure they're available.
HAS THE X TEAM PROPOSED A SPECIFIC LIST OF WHAT THEY NEED AND WHERE IT GOES? AGAIN,
THIS NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED SOON.

In regards to the movie night, I am not sure who is in charge of that, Education or Xteam? I feel like it is more
geared towards education because it is not up for the entire show, it is only one night. Or do you think the
doris activation group should be in charge of this (one member of xt, ct, ed)?

We haven't heard from education if they want to do this. At the same time, we don't want to add this on top of
their list of other events, which are more important and involve a lot more programming and planning around.
We had in mind that this is would be a casual event. Would we add the tech equipment for that event in our
huge tech list for the entire show, or should education because it is only a one time event, and it is not up for
the duration of the exhibition? THIS SHOULD NOT BE ADDED TO THE EDUCATION TEAM'S TO DO LIST,
THIS LATE IN THE PROJECT. IF THE X TEAM HAD SUGGESTED THIS IDEA WHEN THE EDUCATION
TEAM WAS PROPOSING PROGRAMS, THEN IT WOULD MAKE SENSE FOR THEM TO TAKE THIS ON.

           - OTHER ITEMS THAT WERE PRESENTED THAT NEED TO BE DEVELOPED ASAP INCLUDE GRAPHIC
TREATMENT OF THE NAPKIN HOLDERS (WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? WHAT INFO DOES IT
CONVEY?), TABLE TREATMENT (CONTACT PAPER? WHAT SHAPE?), AND SCENTED CENTERPIECES

(ARE THESE STILL PART OF THE PLAN?). THESE ITEMS SEEM MORE CRITICAL TO THE OVERALL
SUCCESS OF THE IDEA THAN MOVIE NIGHT, BUT THEY NEED TO BE DEVELOPED IN
COLLABORATION WITH EDUCATION, EXHIBIT DESIGN, CURATORIAL AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
           CONCEPTS.

           - I HAVE RESERVED THE AMOUNT REQUESTED IN THE FRIENDS OF EDS REQUEST PLUS SOME
ADDITIONAL FOR THIS PIECE (DORIS ACTIVATION BUDGET = $100). THIS WILL BE PAID FOR
THROUGH THE EDS BUDGET (NOT THROUGH EXHIBITIONS DEPT). SAMARA, YOUR TEAM (AKA
YOU) SHOULD TAKE THE LEAD ON THIS AND SEND ME AN UPDATED BUDGET ESTIMATE AS IT IS
           AVAILABLE.

Since several steps are necessary before this piece can be finalized, I have created a list of associated the
following deadlines (NOTE: EVERYONE COPIED ON THIS EMAIL SHOULD BE SENT DRAFT MATERIALS):

           Due Monday 1/5 5pm
           - A decision is made about movie night scope
           - A member of the graphic design team is identified for this task

           Due Friday 1/9 5pm
           - Specific proposal of approach is sent to Gerald / Laure / Glenn (this should include the graphic design, what
are centerpieces? Concept for contact paper, movie night? Etc…

           - Submit revised budget to Glenn

           Due Tuesday 1/13 5pm
           - Gerald / Laure and Glenn send comments on the above

           Friday 1/16 5pm
           - All design are finalized and materials are purchased.

           Week of 1/19
           - Fabrication and Installation of Café Doris materials to be coordinated by X team. How does this happen
when school is in session? Are there things that EDS students can do to help during off hours (time outside of
           installation sign up)?

           Thanks.

           Glenn

           Samara,

Office of events holds all the paper ork. Gerald should know this. He needs only to call Anne for assurance. I
think it was like $280. Ill check the wiki. Yeah I did not add spices. Or wire or Cheese cloth. The spices we
need the mind of luare to dictate what it should be. There is ample room like 2500 buffer in the budget. It
should be covered, but through exhibitions. All cost after the $280 comes from x team budget
           cool?

If you have the paperwork from your meeting with Ann South, could you post it on the wiki, so I can refer
Gerald to it. If not, is it possible to give him a copy when you are in Baltimore?
Is there still money set aside in the budget for doris, since we received knowledge that the friends of eds gave
money for that and how much? I have been calculating it and the spices might be over the budget. I'll play
around with the money we have to see if there is a better solution.
Have a good rest of the break.

Hey Samara, Hope you had a great new year! whooo
It would be easier to call me to talk about these emails, but intill then this is my response
           1. Shapes, Im glad you are considering this. If you need to give Exhibitions or Glenn criteria about how. Just
tell them shapes and we will see that it is done. I did the budge thinking about rectangles. but im sure it would
just require cutting. There are ways! many ways to do it. I would say if there is a stiff in the system that needs
to "know" them tell what is simple and just prepare to do what you feel is right when we are there...
           2. Movie night. THIS IS NOT AN ACTIVITY OF EXHIBITION DESIGN. It was a suggestion to ED. Are they
dropping it on us. Im not sure where this notion comes from? Communicate with ED, see if they want it. It
could be easy, that is all we where proposing.
           3. Still no typeface. Joe is o that. I will call him today.

           4. There is room for budget stuff. Jars I found online. We just need to order them. I will be back on the 7th so I
will, make the order with Glenn and Friends whateva. But you need to know specx right? Ill look on my
thumbdrive. i might not have it. I look you call me maybe.
           5. What else?

For the tables, what would be helpful from gd would be deciding the shape of the contact paper on the table.
Is there a simple shape that is used a lot in the graphic identity or Laure's art, such as a diamond, circle,
hexagon, etc? The contact paper could mimic those shapes, there also could be multiple shapes since there
are multiple tables. We could also use other textures/patterns/color that are in the catalogue/ Laure's
art/inspiration. (please cc/send Jonathan your ideas for the decoupage, im not sure who is in charge of that
           him or me)
For the cards...there is going to be at least 6 cards (one every week, advertising each event that is happening
that week), there could be at most 12 different cards if each side of the napkin dispenser has a different card.
This is the info that I know about the cards:
           Education: reminders of events:
Knitting Jam Fri, February 6, 6-9:30
           14K Cabaret, Friday, Feb 13, (9-11:30)
Special Host: Laure Drogoul, Sat Feb 21
Connecting through Conundrums, Sat Feb 28, (12-3)
Special Host: TBA, Sat, Mar 7
Laure Drogoul at Baskt Theater, Fri, Mar 13
Ex of format. Scented Papermaking, Knitting, and Sewing Lessons/Workshops Feb 28 (12-3), Remember 14K Cabaret
this Friday!, Friday is the 14K Cabaret, you don't want to miss it!, for the special hosts maybe something like.. Laure
Drogoul happening here Sat at 12, etc.
           Curatorial:
4 "did you know?" type facts and 4 other brief things relating to the show (i think they are about 5
           sentences each)
           also advertises the blog/website
Is it possible that each week the layout be different somehow, so it catches the eye of the doris
           eaters?
I'll send you the specific information as I receive it, which is hopefully asap and before glenn's
           deadline of friday the 9th.
           Thanks,

Thanks for the Doris updates Samara and Lydia. Here's how I see the responsibilities being divided (note: I'm
defining teams instead of individuals, since I understand that some additional support may need to come from
team members who weren't identified on the To-Do list).

Napkin holder inserts - Graphic Design and Curatorial
Table contact paper and arrows - Exhibition Design and Graphic Design
Movie night - Exhibition Design, Curatorial, and Education
Centerpieces - Exhibition Design and Curatorial

Since I understand that progress may be more easily (and quickly) made once key players are back from
break, I will look to Exhibition design to propose a revised process / schedule for this issue.

            Thanks.

            Hey Samara,

I think there are a few crossed wires here. I sent Raf/other folks the text for the Education Team's
"sensory guide" (formerly the Hive guide/scavanger hunt brochure). I haven't sent GD anything for
the Doris activation yet. I'll have the info requested to you tomorrow evening (I have an
            off-campus conference from 8:30am-5pm tomorrow).

For the tables, I think you're right about it being good for Curatorial to have input on the design
and content. However, since this isn't something we were counting among our responsibilities until
just now, Thursday seems a bit soon. Do you/the GD Team have images Laure has used in her
work available to use for the tables? If so, that would make things way easier.
I'm cc'ing Glenn to help us determine how to divide responsibility for this task since I'm a bit

            confused.

Since I'll be unavailable for most of tomorrow, I'm also cc'ing my teammates to see if any of them
can help sort out what to do for the tables: Karen, Alissa or Barbie - this needs to be resolved
quickly, so feel free to jump in.

Thanks and happy rest-of-break to all!

I am not sure what you sent to graphic design today. I realized that the
exact content can be due the latest by 13th, sorry about that freak out. We
would need the subject matter of the facts and the length ASAP, latest by
tomorrow. Could you cc that email to me if you send it directly to gd?
The more I think about the soon-to-be decked out tables of doris and its
appearance, the more I think that it might be your responsibility as
curatorial team to pick out what should go on them and their shape. The
tables could be another reference point for the hive (the keane painting wall
paper, skins of follies, etc). or something that is based off of her work
(particular patterns and textures used in Laure's work), which would be more
tied to the graphic identity of the show, or even relating to the content of
the cards, etc. As for the shape, I thought that it could possibly be common
shapes that appear in Laure's art/ in the graphic identity. We could go with
a diamond shape it would be more cabaret like, conundrum arrows going every
which direction, cut the corners off of rectangles (like a scrapbook/picture
book, which was used in the catalog), the shapes can be based off of the
decoupage, or anything else that can be cut by hand. There are approximately
17 tables and to possibility of using the counter tops so each table could be
a home for different patterns/textures and shapes, it would be visual
windows into Laure's world. I would need those designs by Thursday. Is that a
reasonable time? Do you think that would be considered under the curatorial
                    team's responsibilities?
Thanks and I hope you are have a good break,
                    Samara

a google calendar has been available for the past 3 months :)
            http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=q4n9iks86ambnmf249m377qom4%40group.calendar.google.com&
            ctz=America/New_York

Remind me, will these cards have a full calendar of events on them? or just reminders of upcoming ones?

Events that could use cards would be:
Knitting Jam Fri, February 6, 6-9:30
            14K Cabaret, Friday, Feb 13, (9-11:30)
Special Host: Laure Drogoul, Sat Feb 21
Connecting through Conundrums, Sat Feb 28, (12-3)
Special Host: TBA, Sat, Mar 7
Laure Drogoul at Baskt Theater, Fri, Mar 13

It seems like we'd be able to do change them just about every week. They will be done by January 12th.

The Catherine Pancake film will be screened during the 14Karat Cabaret in the BBOX on February 13th. Nothing is
            scheduled for the MAP space.

            Happy New Year,
            Kyle

           Hey,
Here is the PDF of the CAD drawing of the plan of Fox. I just thought I would send it to you guys for visualization
purposes. Its not as detailed as the one we were looking at in class because it has less layers, but it could be helpful if you
wanted to size it up or down or print it out.

           Have a great fall break,

Ok. Model Wednesday at 1pm to drill/paint. Paul are you available at noon to drill? or would you prefer to get together at
1pm? Either is cool. Just let me know cause we cant do anything until we got the bits. It should work out fine if
tomorrow. two of us can drill/cut need pieces and 2 of us can go to exhibitions to get paint materials.
             Cool

I think you're on the right track with how you are thinking about EDS
student involvement. I would also encourage you to group EDS assign up
times together, rather than spread out. This will make it easier to
            schedule/coordinate and to schedule for.

            Thanks.
            Glenn

            Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if you had any input on what types of things should
be omitted form the EDS student sign up. Like, "trips to Greektown to haul
stuff to MICA" or "Pouring Bozo's concrete slab" shouldn't be something they
can sign up for right? But things like "Install Phantom Sleeve" is good,
            right?

            Thanks,
            Maria

           Hi Gerald, Andrea, X team,
I am sure you all will learn about this in the near future, since the sign up will be on the Wiki, but I just wanted to let
you guys know that EDS students will be helping on the following days and times over break:

           Date- Time (#of EDS students)

           Tues, Jan 6- 1 to 4 (3)

           Thurs, Jan 9-9 to 12 (2)
                   1 to 4 (2)

           Fri, Jan 9- 9 to 12 (2)
                    1 to 4 (2)

           Mon, Jan 12- 1 to 4 (3)

           Tues, Jan 13- 9 to 12 (3)

Then we we return from break every weekday from Thurs, Jan 22 to Wed, Jan 28, there will be four EDS students
scheduled for every 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 shift. This gives each student a total of 3 shifts of three hours.

I hope this is informative, I dont even know if you need to know this, I just wanted to inform you for future planning
           purposes,

           Have a good break,
           Maria

OK, here's what she sent me. I'm attaching the slide lists she mentions. As i think i said in class,
only a few pieces on this list are actually in our show. I'll be in touch ASAP w/ mor info.

            > Exhibition Design Team - due 10/21: needs some specific information from you about each
piece that will be in the show. Please complete the attached form for each piece. This includes the
exact title, dimensions, weight, location of the work (which studio it's housed in), whether or not it
requires electricity, and any other notes special installation notes you think would be relevant (e.g.
is it fragile? Do we need a crane?). If you have any questions about the information being
requested, please contact Jonathan Taube of the Exhibition Design Team at 985.373.0755. (I know
Karen e-mailed you a spreadsheet recently, but the X team requested more specific information
than I think we asked for.)

            > I'm attaching the list of all of the artwork we've identified so far. If there are any pieces you'd
like to include in the show that you do not see on this list, please add them. THIS IS A BIG JOB
AND I WILL NEED TO MEET WITH THE X TEAM AND WORK IT OUT. ALMOST ALL
THE WORKS REQUIRE ELECTRICITY...OR WE COULD SAY ALL EXCEPT FOR BILLY
BOB.. AND THE HOMUNCULUS SKINS. ENCLOSED ARE SOME SLIDE LISTS OF THE
WORKS THAT ARE A START FOR THE X TEAM, THEY CAN START WITH THIS. I WILL
FILL OUT THE FORMS AS WELL BUT NEED TO GO TO GREEKTOWN AND DO SOME
SERIOUS INVENTORY WHICH WILL NOT BE TILL THIS WEEK, SINCE I JUST GOT
            BACK IN TOWN TODAY.

           Hey fellas,
I have the CD..In Baltimore though. Im not worried about not having the stock for the decoupage. Between
snatching some from luare's follies, and wat you dug up we are golden. What the news on the typeface? And
Marquee wall? is there an illustrator file for the vinyl cutter? for 4 feet wide? The following is how i see it
           happening.

           Marquee wall:
           1. paint rounded rectangle shape, BG color,Pink for Meyerhoff, Green for Decker, Yellow for Outer fox
           2. adhere vinyl black
           3. Paint and complementing color to the BG color in between letters
           4. fin enjoy

So typeface for curiosity sake, and the impending wall text "titles markers".
Illustrator files prepared for vinyl cutter sizing. Note it needs to be problem solved to fit, and cut
easily. Think of the applicator and their nerves, and health. From what we discussed it looks like,
Decker width equal 4ft, Meyerhoff equals 3ft, and out of fox 4ft. JUST LETTERS NOT outside
           shape!

           Thank you sirs.

I did give Maria a CD that included all the images used in the catalog, the icons, folly skin
samples, 14kt posters, and digitized slides so there is probably some material there that you could
           use for the decoupage.

            Hello Curatorial,
We have two request to be completed by next class. First could you please look back to the final selection and ADD some
kind of image for every item. If there is absolutely no image could you give a detail description of the piece (sketch of)
and note where it is located. Any note will help inform us about why the piece is relevant and might help with placement.
An example of "what the heck is this" is Freud's Rotten Little Dream Beaver and "the performances". What
performances? Descriptions? somekind of image? type of documentation?
Second, for this hive thing I have put together a section on the wiki that needs your contribution - http://wiki.mica.edu
            /exhibitiondevelopment/index.php/The_Hive#Concept
X team will like to solve this hive conundrum next week during the workshop. In the meantime it will be useful to think
about the different spaces that our design creates, internal and external. Think about how Laure's works and collections
can be categorized. Think about a statement that introduces the Hive concept to the viewer and connects the graphic Icon
to the collections that will be "peppered" through out (This will be essential for both of our final presentations). Exact
placement we are not interested so much in, but what things should be INternal and what should be EXternal. Add to the
list of items suitable for the hive and take a stab at suggesting what sections they belong in (with a brief explaination).

            Recap
            1. Complete the image list
            2. Contribute to hive list and consider sections/categories
            3. Prepare some kind of text about the collections.

            Thank you
            Jonathan Taube

           X team Ho!

           Meeting Friday 4pm-5pm Doris.

           Agenda for now will be:

1.Concepts for works that we divided up, rough sketches on napkins may apply

2.Logistics of works and cost ballpark, with list of needed material most important. Doesnt have to be 100% because
there will always be more,as much as you can gather individually.

           3.Budget, above will influence this.

4.Schedule time line review for the rest of the semester.

           5.wiki

           6.whatever is next...

SO! Please tonight or in the morning consider the works that you have selected to dwell upon. Come with 1 and 2 to
some degree of considerations so we can discuss it. Update your wiki page for the work. Don't spend too much time on it.
Be reasonable, stay healthy but make progress.

           Hello xteam!

Great concepts today! Get them on the wiki whether written or upload am image. I would suggest making a heading at
the top of the page: =Concept 1= Then if some one else makes a contribution or a different concept then that would be
=Concept 2= ya know? Call me with and wiki questions.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 12pm! Doris! Finish up model, Concepts, time line and budget compiling.

Some things to take care of before Wednesday:

All - Make contributions on wiki. CONCEPTS of placement, sketches, descriptions, THINK THRU the pieces. Consider
all the items on the Spec Form

Samara- Please email Project CoOrd to put Hive workshop on Agenda for 20-30 mins. Ask them to send out a class email
to view the hive section http://wiki.mica.edu/exhibitiondevelopment/index.php/The_Hive#Physical_aspects I guess
phrase it like please view and contribute...something elegant or spicy.

Paul- Please make some quick calls for quotes. Start with what you think will be the most expensive, ie crane and rentals.
Check out the Master Budget, http://wiki.mica.edu/exhibitiondevelopment/index.php/X_team_Master_Budget Try to
edit it, for a kick, see if it is a suitable way for plugging in budget stuff.

Maria- Please upload detailed floor plans as PDFs. Measurement between like everything. Plugs. Most of this should
have already been created. Also if you have some good vantage point gallery photos, resize to 100pi 800px widest.

All- bring some kind of materials to make props for the models. clay, cardboard, toys, bits of string.

          Hi Samara,

This means that I want your team to spend some time thinking about all of
the exhibition design components that require work by other teams. For
example, will there be a statement in the gallery? If so, this needs to be
written (or edited from existing text) and formatted by the graphic design
team. Based on your previous presentations, it seems most additional
content will be located in the Hive. I suggest you all coordinate with
Curatorial and Education teams on this.

I was also thinking that it would be a good idea to reserve some of the
technology that will likely be used in the exhibition ASAP. On past
projects we've forgotten to do this and have had to rent equipment ($$).
Specifically I suggest your team reserves all available large scale
monitors, a computer to be located in the gallery and all 3 sound domes. You
can coordinate this with Andrea Dixon in Exhibitions Dept (see project
          contact sheet on wiki).

          Thanks.
          Glenn

Christina told me to email you about the specifics that you asked for in the
mock presentation next week. What do you mean by "list of content required",
what content are you referring to?

            Hi Jonathan,

Sorry for the delayed response. Here's what I got:

-All images that we have are posted to the wiki. I'm emailing Laure to request images of the busts,
but if memory serves I've asked her before and she doesn't have any. She described them as busts
in the classical sense, shoulders up sculptural representations of a figure, so I suppose they'd
need pedistals or shelves for the show. I will let you know if I can get my hands on any images.

-Laure has promised to share sketches of her new work (Sweet Annie & Army of Fools) before
our final proposal presentation but I don't have anything yet.

-Freud's Rotten Little Dream Beaver - Laure doesn't have any photos of this either. It's a
taxidermied beaver (so for dimensions, however big beavers are...) with extra teeth. Think vagina
            dentata...pun-liscious.

-I added some other information about collection/hive pieces to your Hive wiki page. Hope that's
            helpful!

Alissa wrote some nice text explaining the Hive succinctly. I don't have the final version of this
text and am waiting for one of my teammates to share it with me/post it on the wiki.

            Thanks,
            Lydia

            Jonathan, Paul and Samara,
Here's the 411 on the soul bruising meeting:
-Gerbear wants us to interact with Cafe Doris. He suggested putting something on the tables maybe, such as sweet annie.
-He also wanted us to think about sweet annie or frog kissing booth in the brown atrium. He would be willing to omit
frog kissing booth but not really fugue chamber.
-He seemed up for Bozo in Cohen Plaza.
-He wants us to think about the ramp space for collections, Evidence of Fairy Land(elf skins) and possibly some
unexpected lighting such as a disco ball.
-He also mentioned something about possibly putting older pieces in Meyerhoff.

OK!! These are just some ideas for y'all to consider when you are throwing together your fresh, spicy and new placement
schemes. By the by, Samara we are doing some new placement sketches to mix it up.

For the final Gerald would like to see:

            -two designs for hive
            -new placements
-Nature trail spookhouse as an option in Decker
-some new ideas for Keane paintings

Are we good? Are we?? Bet you dollars to donuts this will come together.

            Jazzhands,
            Maria

           Xteam,

Thank you for contacting me about your frustrations. Please know that I appreciate all of your hard work and
will do all I can to help resolve the issues you bring up. The concerns outlined in your messages are valid and
they should be shared with the seminar when evaluating the project process. I'm happy to see that, within
your team, you have established an open and constructive dialogue about the exhibition design issues and I
trust that your input will have a significant impact on the final installation. Some specific suggestions are as
           follows:

Maybe we should create more ideas based off of theirs?, ...the most valuable contribution we can make now
is suggestion of our vision. We don't have the time to fight this in my opinion, let's re-evaluate our role." - I
agree that, given the timeframe, your team should focus your efforts on realizing the remaining installation
issues, rather than proposing alternative solutions. One of the ways that the EDS educational experience
differs from other course models is that our work on the project doesn't stop at concept. I know how
committed you all are to the success of the exhibition design and I strongly encourage you to find the role
where you can make the greatest contribution to the project given the reality of the situation as you
understand it to be. For example, following through on the more pragmatic installation planning that remain
undefined. I suggest you refer to all items outlined on my previous email and chip away at these lists.

Why are we developing a way to do this when we could observe their process and learn how it is done? - This
question gets to the core of the EDS method and, again, please bring this up during our project evaluation.

bozo placement - If this wasn't discussed in the walk through and your team has a well-considered and
specific proposal, I suggest you email to Laure and Gerald for their consideration. This can, and should, be
concise. For example, a sketch showing proposed placement and a bulleted list of reasons your team favors
           this alternative.

the Hive design...EDS and GR/LD have had completely different visions - This is unfortunate and based on
last week's class discussion, I'm not confident that EDS has articulated a shared, cohesive vision for this
element. At a minimum, I suggest your team focus on creating a list of EDS generated content to be included
in this area (e.g. event calendar, hive statement, etc), to insure that Gerald and Laure are aware of these
           elements.

           Thanks again.
           Glenn

           All, Xteam, Glenn, and Neil,
After the walk through we are still, even more confused about our role and our responsibilities now. Here is a
conversation that has begun. We need advice, clarification and perhaps contextualization to EDS. Paul and
Maria, please add your comments, and reply all.

Topics not nailed down during the Walk through:

           Equipment needs
           Bozo Placement
the Hive design (Gerald and Laure will discuss it apparently) EDS and GR/LD have had completely different
           visions.

I have been thinking....and based off of this walk through I do not understand our role in the exhibition.
Especially because they through our ideas out and was starting new. I agree with you, we probably should
have started walk through earlier to get feedback. I don't understand our role in the exhibition if Gerald and
Laure are planning the exhibition despite our ideas. Maybe we should create more ideas based off of theirs? I
don't have time and you probably dont and no one does either, but even if we did, what would be the point, in
the end it seems that we would be organizing their ideas. It didn't seem very fair that Gerald seemed to listen
more to his team than ours, but it kinda makes sense though. do you think we should talk/email Glenn about
this and see what his opinion on our role is. but maybe what we are supposing to do is create and realize their
ideas, those ideas are the few that they preserved. the thing that is also bugging me is the bozo
placement.(not addressed during the walk through) Why does Gerald have more power over placement than
Laure, or the majority, could that ruin the chances of having bozo in general?

just my thought process of tonight.
           -samara

I think you said it right here Samara.
It is reasonable that they make these decisions in spite of our ideas. The decisions to move FFDarwin to
where A. for Orchestral Knitting was, and grouping it with the Phantom Sleeve is a more cohesive placement.
But when it comes to the process of EDS and our team's Role to come up with concepts and a vision...seems
to have been for only practice and experience, to pretend comes to mind. What needs to be address with
Glenn is our Role now, and at this time...the changes mean more of a load. I feel that it is over stepping its
bounds, as a thing...this strange exhibition monster we like to get ourselves involved in. If Gerald is going to
make the call anyway, we are just standing around, the most valuable contribution we can make now is
suggestion of our vision. And with the general lack of understanding of the work at this point, Gerald and
Laure should make this decision, and should work how they do it. Perhaps we are in the way. Why are we
developing a way to do this when we could observe their process and learn how it is done?

           _jtaube

I agree fully with both of you. Although we put a lot of effort into placement strategy that seem to have been
entirely cast aside and a hive idea and design that no longer represents the class, I actually DO understand
that it is Laure's show, and even though we supposedly have the job of placement, it is Gerald's job FOR
REAL and his team will be doing the installation. We should step back, allow the placement scheme the way it

thought having actual 16mm footage would be problematic because you can't loop it and it would

As a follow-up, here's the beginning of an email response I started about the Hive. Let's discuss
          more in class :)
How the Hive relates to Laure's work:
Laure approaches art-making as a collector: stockpiling images and research material, collecting
weeds and scents. The Hive will place the collections that inspire her side-by-side with her artwork
and provide visitors with a rare view into Laure's creative process. When installing the work,
Curatorial will be approaching the hive intuitively: situating collections next to pieces so that they
can be in dialogue with one another (e.g. placing the humunculous skins next to Laure's "precious
moments" figurines). I don't think we should have a "collections" section and an "art" section.

With regards to the confusion about the educational component of the Hive: I've always seen the
computer kiosk as the primary "educational" part of the Hive. Additional information (research,
history, etc.) about Laure's work will exist on the website, and Hive visitors are free to paruse that
info. The Hive's primary function is to draw visual connections between Laure's collections and
her artwork, which in itself is something that will further educate the viewer about her work and
process. I was a little confused in the walkthrough about the class' understanding of the
Educational components of the Hive, aside from wall text and the computer kiosk, where else were
folks expecting to find educational information in the Hive?

If there is any written information the Education team envisioned in the Hive, I think the
scavenger hunt guide would be a perfect place to put that info.

Here is an updated/condensed list of hive peices for class today. Please
fill in any blanks you can think of!
Samara--the short answer is a cabinet of curiosities. Laure's work is so
experiential that we don't want too much overtly educational stuff--can be a
turnoff for viewers. We can combine Laure's art with her collections--I
think the lines will be pretty clear especially with labels, of which Laure
is getting us a list asap!

               -Karen

In regards to the hive, we would like you to consider how the content relates
to Laure's other art. Through that consideration, think about the
organization of the content, if each wall/section is going to relate to each
other, emphasize on a certain aspect of the show/her work, scattered and no
               apparent organization, etc.
Which approach are you going to be taking when confronting the hive? In the
walk through Saturday, it was unclear what the function of the hive would be.
Laure and Gerald have a different vision for it than the class, a cabinet of
curiosities vs. an informational kiosk to understand Laure's art and
collections. Is there a way that you can combine these two ideas? It might
mean that there would be more of a need for additional wall text or a "hive
guide" to understand the context of the works shown, you would have to work
with Education on what you want the hive to function as.
One of the main issues coming up is the hive's relationship to the rest of
the show, we don't want to confuse the viewer into thinking that the hive is
another work of Laure's. Our plan is to have related Hive material scattered
through out the exhibition, possibly with examples in the hive or menchion it
on the wall text or reference the hive guide/web through the use of icons. Do
we want the hive to contain examples of her collections/inspirations, etc. or
have it serve as a place to exhibit parts of Laure's art (gallery within a
               gallery)?
               I hope this helps,
               Samara

I'll keep everyone
               posted!
