					DYSON

OVERVIEW

DYSON develops and manufactures vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, fans, and motors.
The company is best known for revolutionizing the vacuum industry with their Dual
Cyclone bag-less vacuum cleaner, replacing traditional bagged vacuum cleaners,
which lose suction easily. Today their vacuum cleaners lead the market in the UK,
Europe, Japan and the USA. DYSON also pioneered the equally clever and
functional Airblade hand-dryers and Air Multiplier fans. The company also holds
more than 1,300 patents and patent applications for more than 300 different
inventions.

DYSON’s engineers are continuously challenging existing products and developing
new technologies to make them more sustainable. Keeping in mind that
environmentally responsible engineering is efficient engineering, DYSON has been
focusing on creating machines that are made of fewer materials and consume less
energy, but perform better and last longer.

DOING GOOD AND DOING WELL

Environmental

To save on energy expenses and reduce carbon emissions, DYSON has implemented
leaner logistics processes such as reducing packaging and eliminating the use of
pallets. As a result, the company’s shipping efficiency has improved by 98%. The
redesigned packaging uses approximately 25% less cardboard. In addition, DYSON
engineers have designed more efficient motor technology to reduce energy usage, and
smaller machines reducing material waste. DYSON also promotes energy savings
among its employees: the company has set up a car-sharing scheme for its employees,
including hybrid cars and energy efficient diesel-powered vans.1

Social education

The James Dyson Foundation runs workshops across the globe in which young people
have the opportunity to solve engineering challenges in practical, hands-on ways. The
James Dyson Award is also given to aspiring design and engineering students,
attracting potential future talent to the company. DYSON also funded the Dyson
Microarray Laboratory at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, which helps
scientists study thousands of genes at a time, identifying patterns relevant to breast
cancer and its treatment.2

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Consumer Safety

There have been a number of reports in 2010 that highlight concerns regarding the
safety of DYSON products. In Tokyo, twenty-four DYSON vacuum cleaner users
suffered from minor burns due overheating power cords.3 In Sydney, DYSON issued
a precautionary recall notice for Dyson DC05 Motorhead.4 These ongoing safety
incidents have led to increased calls for DYSON to prioritize consumer safety.

Product Reliability

In the UK, consumer-focused Which? Magazine ranked DYSON last in a comparison
of product reliability: DYSON vacuum cleaners required the most repairs in the first
six years compared to other manufacturers. Nearly a fifth of DYSON users reported
issues with their machine. Surprisingly, despite these problems, DYSON customers
were the most likely to recommend the machine to a friend.5 Clearly customers are
happy: DYSON’s market share continues to grow.
