Jack Johnson Award
Mrs Egyedy – Award Coordinator
Due : April 30, 2010
It is that time of year to organize our students for the Jack Johnson award.
This unique award is given to our school every year from a will left by the late Jack
Johnson. The interest from the investment funds has given us the opportunity to issue 8
awards of $500. This is given on grading day.
Many students are eligible for this award. The awards are totally at the arbitrary
discretion of the Trustees of the Jack Johnson fellowship Fund.
Please follow these criteria:
All students can apply from grade 7,8,9
200 word essay due April 30, 2010
Application stapled with the essay with 2 references
No award will be given without the student or parent SIN number
All information on the application is confidential
All essays presented must be neat, organized, and appropriate
Criteria for this award
Jack Johnson, a Junior High School Principal and long time bay resident,
deplored the fact that many times “nice” students are not recognized in any special
way for those qualities of character which are just as important and as worthy as
academic or sport excellence. In his Will, he provided for an award intended to give this
recognition.
Students of Five Bridges Junior High may apply for one of the eight awards of
$500 each to be issued in the June graduation. Students may win more than once.
Recipients will be chosen yearly by the Trustees. Students must have two signatures of
reference to support the application. Submissions will be reviewed with school officials.
The award is not based on financial needs, academic excellence, sports ability,
or leadership qualities. This award is unique in that they require only that the students
demonstrate by their attitude and behavior in school those qualities that define
decency and graciousness. Please read the exact quote from Mr. Johnson’s will. They
should be…
“ Students who have demonstrated by their appearance, their actions and their
behavior towards teachers and fellow students such qualities of respect,
kindness, fellowship, and decency as has in the opinion of the school population
set an example for others and helped make the school and the world a better
place.”
Applications are to be submitted by April 30, 2010; late ones will not be accepted.
