How to Install Filezilla Client

FileZilla Client is an FTP, FTPS, and SFTP client that runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. At the time of

this article, 3.3.5.1 is the latest stable version of the client. FileZilla Client is a free download, equipped with

a user-friendly interface and plenty of features. Its features list includes drag and drop support, a network

configuration wizard, remote file editing, bookmarks, remote file search, configurable transfer speed limits,

and more.

Installing FileZilla Client is easy, and you can start by going to its download page here:

http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

Once there, you will have to decide which version you want to download. If you are a Windows user, you

can choose between an installer .exe version or a .zip version. To use the program, you must be running

Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. The installer .exe version is recommended for most users, as it will let

you download and run the program easily.

The .zip version is for those who do not have sufficient rights to install programs on their computers. This

could be you if you are using a computer at work. It also works well if you want to carry the program around

on a portable USB stick. You will need a program to unzip the files, however.

Linux and Mac users also have their own versions to download, although you will not find the installer

version on either. Also, if you are looking to modify FileZilla, you can do so by downloading the source code

version.

Windows installation with the .exe version

Click on the .exe link on FileZilla Client's download page. You will be taken to a page that says the download

will start shortly. Depending on your setup, you will be asked to either Run or Save the file. Choose Run if

you can, otherwise Save it. Once the download is finished, the installer will either run automatically -- or if

you saved it, find the .exe file and double-click it.

A pop-up will ask you to select a language for the installer. Select your language and click OK. You will see

the License Agreement. Look over it and click I Agree. Next, you will be asked for whom the application

should be installed. Choose between anyone who uses the computer or just yourself. Click Next.

Now is the time to choose your components. If you click on a component, a description will appear. Check all

of the desired components and click Next.

The next window asks you to choose an install location. The default location is recommended. Click Next.

The installer will ask you to choose a Start menu folder. The default, FileZilla FTP Client, should be good

enough. Click Install. The program will install. Once it is finished, you can check the Start FileZilla now box

to begin using the program. Click Finish.

Windows installation with the .zip version

Select the .zip version from the FileZilla Client download page and save it. Once it downloads, you will have

to unzip or extract the files. After the files are extracted, click on the filezilla.exe file to begin and complete

the installation.

Linux installation

FileZilla Client's Linux version is built for Debian 5.0. If you are using a different version of Linux, you should

manually compile FileZilla or use your distribution's package management system.

Once the program's files are extracted, you can begin installation by going to the bin/ subdirectory and

looking for the FileZilla executable file.

Mac OS X installation

You must be running Mac OS X 10.5 or newer to use FileZilla Client. On the download page, you will have to

choose between an Intel or a PowerPC G4 version. Choose the appropriate download that corresponds to

your Mac's CPU. The Intel version should suffice for most users, just in case you don't know which group you

fall into.

After the file is downloaded, it will extract automatically as long as you used the Safari browser. If you used

a different browser, you might have to perform a manual extraction. Once extracted, double-click the file to

begin your installation.
