Alaska Regions Concept Map Project
Enduring Understanding
A region can be defined by shared history and human characteristics along with distinctive
physical characteristics such as landforms, climate, hydrology, vegetation, and animal life.
Student objectives:
Day one: Your job is to write detailed notes describing one assigned Alaskan region’s characteristics for
two sub-categories within one class period.
Information for Day One’s objective can be found at www.akhistorycourse.org under the geography
prompt and by accessing the regional map found on the left side of the web page.
Day two: Your job is to type information for your region’s subcategory into a concept map template
accessible at Mr. Halls AK History Class Web Page by ten minutes prior to class ending. The group
leader must set-up and turn in the map before group will be released at the bell.
Room is limited so prioritize essential information ahead of time.
Information on the concept maps will be used for semester exam material. Each student will receive a
copy of regional concept maps. You will want to become familiar with each map’s content.
Alaska Regions Concept Map Project
1. The history of human habitation in your region. This should include:
a. The date of the earliest evidence of humans in the region
b. Dates when one major town or city in the region was founded and named and why it was
founded
c. An interesting place name in your region and its derivation
d. A list of the sources (include page numbers or URL addresses) for your information
2. Demographic information. This should include:
a. A list of the Native groups that have homelands in your region
b. The regional hub or hubs
c. The total population of your region as of the latest census information
d. The current ethnic makeup of the region

3. The major geographic features of your region (rivers, mountains, terrain)

4. Your region's climate

5. An ecological description of your region (e.g., tundra, forest, desert, major plants and animals)

6. Economic information on your region. Include:
a. What are the region's natural resources?
b. How are the region's natural resources harvested or used?
c. How important is subsistence in your region?
d. What is the average yearly income in your region?
e. What are the most important jobs in your region?
