1.) Grading System

A.) Examinations 40 %

Exams make up the majority of a student’s quarter average. It is

extremely important that students fully prepare for each exam. Students

can expect to receive TWO major exams each quarter as well as a

number of smaller quizzes. Extra help will be provided before each

exam.

B.) Projects/DBQs/Essays 20%

During each marking period, students will be required to complete TWO

projects. Some examples of these projects include outside reading,

document-based question assignments, and thematic essays. Students

will be given time during class to work on certain projects, but students

must also work on projects at home.

C.) Current Event Assignments 20%

The Current Event Assignment is outlined on a separate sheet.

D.) Homework 10%

Homework will be assigned ALMOST every night. Each Sunday, Mr.

Turano will post a weekly homework sheet on his blog

(www.mrturano.wordpress.com). This blog post will outline homework

as well as other various other assignments for the entire week. If a

student has difficulty accessing a computer, he/she may request a hard-

copy of the homework sheet. If such a request is made, each student will

only receive ONE homework sheet. If a student loses his/her homework

sheet, it is his/her responsibility to make a photocopy or refer to the

blog.

While there is not an official homework format, students are

expected to complete each assignment on loose-leaf paper or by using a

word process like WordPerfect of Microsoft Word. Please make sure that

each homework assignment is done neatly and accurately. Students

who do not put effort into their homework assignments will not

receive any credit!!!

E.) Class Participation & Attendance 10%

Students are expected to attend class every day. Excessive absences will

inevitably force the instructor to lower a student’s grade. While in class,

students are actively encouraged to participate. Some students may be

hesitant to participate at first, but as they become more comfortable in

the classroom environment, they are expected to add their input to class

discussions and debates.

2.) Classroom Behavior

Students are expected to adhere to the following guidelines at all times:

A.) Students must arrive to class ON TIME!!! After the 2nd bell, the

classroom door will be closed. If a student comes in the classroom after

the 2nd bell, he or she will be regarded as late. After a student is late

three times, a parent will be contacted. If the problem is not corrected

after a phone call home, more serious actions will be taken.

B.) After the 2nd bell, students must be prepared to work. At the

beginning of each class, students are expected to follow the instructions

written on the blackboard. The following outline illustrates how a typical

class should run:

Students arrive to class on time, sit in their seats, and immediately

take out their notebooks, folders, and their homework assignment.

All other items, including bags and materials for other classes

must be put away.

Students pass up their homework assignments to the front of each

row.

Students complete the DO-NOW assignment written on the

blackboard.

For the remainder of the class period, students will attentive to the

class being taught. Students WILL NOT:

a.) Partake in side conversations with other students.

b.) Use any type of electronic devices (cellphones, I-Pods)

c.) Eat, drink, or chew gum. Drinking water is appropriate

d.) Get out of their seats without permission.

4.) Absences

Students should be prepared to arrive to class everyday on-time. If a

student misses a class for any reason, he or she must bring in the

homework assignment the following day. Each student must also make

up any notes or assignments.

Makeup tests will not be given during class. If a student misses a

quiz or exam, he or she must be prepared to take the test at 7:30 AM to

next morning.
