What is a domain name?

A domain name is a 'name' to identify a website, similar to your own name
that identify yourself to your friends .Domain name is an identification string that
defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet.
Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name
System (DNS).

                                      Figure 1: Domain Name

Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-
specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents an
Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the
Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other
service communicated via the Internet.

                                         3
How it works?
Each computer connected to the Internet has a unique IP address. The IP
address consists of four sets of numbers, for example, 195.234.53.199. To be able
to connect to any given computer via the Internet you need to know its IP address,
but because numbers are hard to remember domain names are used instead. The
domain name system (DNS) then translate the domain name you entered into your
browser into the correct IP address. This is done automatically and you as a user
need not worry about it

In the internet world, domain name is a unique name for people to identify a
website, like yahoo.com is a popular domain name to an internet website with a lot
of fun thing, and google.com is a website to do internet searching etc. While
anyone can register a domain name, there is an authority (iana.org) governing the
creation of these domain names and there are some rules they have set for people
to follow when dealing with domain names.

Top-level domain

                               Figure 2: Levels of Domain

                                           4
A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the
hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. The top-level domain names are
installed in the root zone of the name space. For all domains in lower levels, it is
the last part of the domain name, that is, the last label of a fully qualified domain
name. For example, in the domain name www.example.com, the top-level domain
is .com (or .COM, as domain names are not case-sensitive). Management of most
top-level domains is delegated to responsible organizations by the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which operates the
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and is in charge of maintaining the
DNS root zone.

Second-level and lower level domains
Second-level domains commonly refer to the organization that registered the
domain name with a domain name registrar. Some domain name registries
introduce a second-level hierarchy to a TLD that indicates the type of organization
intended to register an SLD under it. For example, in the .uk namespace a college
or other academic institution would register under the .ac.uk, while companies
would register under .co.uk.

Domain registration
In the old days, domain registration was only available at network solutions
and the cost for registering a domain name is more costly than now, Reserving a
domain name is easy and much cost friendly. If you do a search of "domain
registration" at any search engines, you will notice there are a long list of domain
registration provider available for you to choose, some offer top level domain
name registrations, and some has extended their offers to ccTLDs registrations.

Domain registration is a simple process, all you need is an active credit card
and figure out a good name for your website and you can select one of the domain
registration provider of your choice and check if your desired domain is available
for registration, if it is available you can proceed on to submit payment and the
domain will then be registered under your ownership after 24-72 hours. Please take
                                         5
note that domain ownership is on yearly basis, and you can renew the ownership of
the domain name with single to multi-year payment, just be sure that you do not
miss the renewal, otherwise the domain will be released back to public pool where
anyone can register the domain again.

How to Choose a Domain Name
There is no right or wrong way to choose a domain name. However, it's best
to consider what your goals are and then learn how to best meet those goals.

Figure 3: Choose a Domain Name

Consider Your Goals

For instance, if you have a business that is strictly online and will likely
depend upon Search Engines as your main way to gain traffic to your site, then you
may want to consider choosing a domain name that contains keywords that are
relevant to your site. These Keywords would be something people type into a
search engine.

Consider SEO

Thus, a domain name is one piece of the SEO (search engine optimization)
puzzle. In optimizing web pages, we use keywords and phrases in strategic
locations and throughout our content. The domain name is one more place where
using keywords can help your SEO.

1. Research Keyword Phrases people commonly use in a search engine when
searching for a particular topic. Ideally, your domain name will include the most
important keyword(s) that are relevant to your web site.

2. Use a Hyphen to Split up Keywords. There is much debate about whether to
use a hyphen in a domain name. I suggest using a hyphen when your goal is to
generate traffic from search engines. It separates the keywords, and the thought is
that search engines will be able to read the individual words instead of say 3 words
mashed into one.

I researched my keywords, and based upon that research AND the availability of
domain names, chose Expression-web-tutorial.com which happened to be one of
the most frequently searched terms for Expression web. It's also quite relevant to
my web site.

Let me point out that the domain name alone is only one factor in optimization. It
alone will not generate the kind of traffic you want or need. Therefore, you can
certainly choose a domain name that has nothing to do with keywords, yet still
rank well in the search engines. For instance, if your goal is to Brand yourself,
you might choose a domain name a bit differently.

Branding Goal

If you are selling yourself or your brand, then choose a domain name that is
unique, easy to remember, and somehow adds to your brand. If you have a physical
shop and planning to extend your business online, obviously you would want to
register a domain name that is the same as your shop name this will give your
online customers a sense of confident if they have been shopping at your physical
shop.

You May Want to Protect Your Privacy

As you're registering your name, you will be presented with the option of
keeping your domain name private - a deluxe feature you may want to take
advantage of.

A private domain registration will keep your information (name, email address,
etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from
reaching your email box.

Even though registering a "private" domain is not mandatory and will not block all
spam, it is a great idea if you want to keep your contact information out of the
domain registry database. Some people want to register domains anonymously, so
this is the reason this option is available.

Avoid mistake in Domain Name Registration

Domain registration process is simple, all you need is a credit card and a
internet browser and you can get a domain name registered within minutes.
However, there are some common mistakes that people should be aware of when
registering a domain name, this is important as a domain name is the identity of
your website and loosing the online identity can caused severe damage to a
business.

Register the domain name yourself

There are people prefer 'one-stop' service and push everything to a freelance
web programmer/designer, there is likely to see no problem if you are paying
promptly and the programmer/designer is delivering the job well initially.
However, as time goes by, there can be anything to happen, you might have lost
contact with the freelancer and your domain name is about to die for renewal. You
can renew it because you are not the current owner of the domain name; you

                                         8
cannot request to transfer the domain to yourself because that requires the current
owner to authorize the transfer.

The only thing you can do is wait for the domain to expire and rush to
register the domain name back yourself, you might need some luck to register it
back, because once a domain name is expired, it is freely available to anybody that
wants it. Also, when a domain name is expired, it is generally being reset pointing
back to placeholder webpage with advertisements shown by the domain
registration company, and all your email accounts on your domain will be de-
activated automatically. Therefore, to protect yourself from all these, it is highly
recommended to register the domain name yourself.

Avoid registering a trademarked domain name

Don't think that ridding on other people success can get you rich, there is no
free lunch under the sun and everybody is working hard to be successful and they
are paying attention on people that are violating their rights. You might get away
for awhile but when you are caught in a trademark violation, you are not only
losing your online business instantly, caught in huge damage claim. So, be very
careful when selecting a domain name to avoid being caught in all these when you
are on the way to the success.

Be sure to renew your domain name on time

You are working real hard to beat your online competitors, search the entire
internet for your targeted audience, calling all your suppliers bargaining for the
lowest cost price so that you can have a much competitive pricing, but be sure you
have not missed your domain renewal notice, you should always renew your
domain on time to avoid losing your business. Remember? When a domain name
expires, everything stops working.

Free domain name hosting and things to consider

There are several webhosting providers offering free domain name when signup
for a hosting package with them. Since a domain name is so important as an
identity to your website, you should make sure you have double check by reading
through the terms carefully to ensure there is no domain ownership issues in future,
you should make sure :-

   1. you are the registered owner of the domain name in domain WHOIS record
   2. you can transfer the domain name freely to other domain registrars
   3. you can host your website at other web hosting provider
   4. you have no long term commitment to this current web hosting provider

Just remember the golden rule here is no free lunch under the sun, every
business needs to make money in order to survive, especially in an ultra
competitive market like web hosting, and there are all kinds of marketing
techniques to drag you from moving away from the web host so that they can earn
                                        10
recurring revenue from you. I am sure you don't want to be tie down to a web
hosting provider, especially if you need to surrender your domain name when you
want to move away from the web host. Therefore, make sure you have read their
terms carefully to ensure you will not the next victim.

A safe approach is to separate the two service, register your domain name with
a domain name registrar, and choose a good and honest web host to host your
website, in case you need to transfer your hosting elsewhere, just upload your
website regular backup to the new hosting server, change the name server record at
your domain registrations website to point to the new hosting server, wait for 24-
48 hours and your website visitors are visiting your website at new hosting server.

Conclusion
Domain name can provide you with a pathway to starting your own website
which can help you expand your portfolio if you are a business looking to sell
online, or can provide you with another method of communicating with the world
if you are just an individual.
