           LCHS Army JROTC Cadets
            To Compete in Regionals
LAS CRUCES – Thirty-five Las Cruces High School U.S. Army JROTC cadets have been
selected to attend and compete in the Army Western Regionals, which will be held March 11-14,
2010 in San Antonio, Texas, said Sergeant Major Velton Locklear Jr., senior Army instructor for
the Corps of Cadets at LCHS.
“This is once in a lifetime for us to take advantage of this great opportunity to excel. We
are very excited about this competition,” said Locklear. “We have been working very hard for
this ROTC competition,” he said.
Locklear said LCHS was one of only two JROTC units from New Mexico selected from
among 1,645 JROTC programs to compete in San Antonio. “This is a distinct honor to have
been selected by the U.S. Army to attend western regionals,” he said. He said the LCHS unit
qualified for the regional competition based on its past performances in competitions and “our
overall rating as a corps of cadets. The requirements were very strict.”
The Army will pay for the trip to San Antonio, where the LCHS cadets will compete
against approximately 60 other JROTC programs from across the nation in in-ranks inspection,
academic skills, uniform inspection, individual and team drill and other categories, said Locklear.

XO. Other unit leaders are battalion CSM James Franco, Cpt. Arthur Lindsey, battalion S-1
