                            Black / Dark      ‫ח ַׁ ך‬
                                              ְ ‫ָש‬     Strongs 2821

The word for black essentially means dark, and by implication black. Black represents
darkness as the absence of light and also represents sorrow and famine. Black describes the
colour of the middle of the night.

Be dark = be in a state of little or no light, with an associative meaning of gloom or depressed
feelings.

Job 3:9 ‘May the stars of its morning be dark, ‫ ֶחשכּו‬may it look for light but have none..’
Job 18:6 ‘The light is dark in his tent       ‫ח ַׁ ך‬
                                              ְ ‫= אֹורְ ָש‬   Or chashach = light is dark

Ecclesiastes 12:2 ‘before are darkened the sun, the light, the moon, and the stars.’

Isaiah 5:30 ‘Behold darkness and distress, and the light is darkened by its cloud.’

Isaiah 13:10 ‘The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon…’

Darken
Psalm 105:28 ‘He sent darkness      ‫ֶך‬                  ‫ַׁי ִׁ ך‬
                                    ְ ‫ חֹש‬and made dark ְ ‫’וַׁחש‬
Psalm 139:12 ‘Even the darkness, will not be dark to You. But the night shines as day,
as the darkness, so is the light.’

Exodus 10:15 ‘For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened.’

Joel 2:2 ‘A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the
morning clouds as blackness spread over the mountains.’

Be black = be the color black, as an extension of darkness as the absence of light
Lamentations 4:8 ‘they are blacker than soot.’

Not see = be darkened, be in a state of blindness as an extension of having a lack of light for
perception. Psalm 69:24 ‘Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see.’

Obscure = make something hard to understand, as an extension of causing a lack of light.
Job 38:2 ‘Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?’

Dark skin

Job 30:30 ‘My skin turns black ‫ ש ַׁר‬on me, and my bones are burned with heat.’
                               ‫ר‬
Song of Songs 1:5 ‘I am dark ְ‫ שחֹו ָה‬but comely’
Song of Songs 1:6 ‘do not stare at me because I am dark      ‫ח ר‬
                                                            ‫ש ַׁרחֹ ֶת‬   ’
The sky, sun and moon
Jeremiah 4:28 ‘For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black.’

Joel 2:10 ‘The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the
moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.’
1 Kings 18:45 ‘the sky grew black with clouds and rain’
Revelation 6:12 ‘the sun became black as sackcloth.’


Black horses
Zechariah 6:2,3,6 ‘ In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black
horses; And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.
Revelation 6:5 ‘And when he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying,
Come. And I saw, and behold, a black horse; and he that sat thereon had a balance in his
hand.’


Black hair
Leviticus 13:31 ‘If there is no black hair in it’
Song of Songs 5;11 ‘His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a
raven.’
Matthew 5:36 ‘Neither shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair
white or black.’



John 8:12 ‘Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who
follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

YHWH is our Light and Salvation. Let us never have an absence of light!
