4.5.2 RNAV Procedure descriptions (OCP/14-WP/36)
4.5.2.1 The need for unambiguous RNAV procedure descriptions in the AIP has been recognised
for some years to enable uniform navigation database coding. The rapporteur of the Data Quality
Working Group proposed that the best option would be to apply the globally accepted industry
standard that is being used for navigation database coding (ARINC 424), i.e. path terminator
codes, and to publish these codes in the procedure description.
4.5.2.2 The meeting considered amendments to Annex 4 and PANS-OPS providing direction and
guidance to the procedure designer concerning RNAV procedure descriptions and the proper
application of the ARINC 424 path terminators.
4.5.2.3 In reviewing of the proposal, an alternative placement of the amendments was suggested
that would better conform with the general ICAO protocol of placing high level material in the
annexes and more technical, detailed material in lower-level documents. The meeting agreed with
the proposals subject to minor technical revisions, and with the recommendations regarding
placement of the amendments.
4.5.2.4 It was pointed out that the Instrument Flight Procedure Construction Manual (Doc 9368)
contains material concerning path terminators and that this material should be reviewed for
consistency with the new proposed PANS-OPS, Volume II amendment. The Secretary agreed to
undertake this task.
