Open Letter from the Chairperson

October 2003

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 27th celebration of Italian Heritage and

Culture Month. This year’s event is dedicated to the cen-

tennial of Enrico Caruso’s American debut at the Metropoli-

tan Opera on November 23, 1903.

Enrico Caruso, the most famous tenor of his era, was

born in Naples on February 25, 1873 to a poor family. He was

the third of seven children whose mother provided him with

his primary education.

“A LONG CRESCENDO” is the way a New York Times

headline described Caruso’s career. Caruso attended a

school for choral singing in the evening while working as a

mechanic in the daytime. His skills as a singer were devel-

oped under the tutelage of Guglielmo Vergine and Vincenzo

Lombardi. Before coming to the United States, he performed

in theatres throughout Italy as well as other countries in

Europe and South America. In 1901, he sang La Boheme at

La Scala under Toscanini. He also sang in other operas

conducted by Toscanini with whom he traveled to Buenos

Aires. Nearly all his splendid career was in America where

he created, among other operas, The Girl of the Golden

West. He continued to perform at the Metropolitan Opera

until his death which occurred while visiting his native

Naples in 1921.

This year, in keeping with the theme of Enrico Caruso’s

anniversary, many of our activities will focus on Italian op-

era. We invite you to join us in this special celebration and

to participate in as many events listed in this booklet as you

possibly can.

Grazie di cuore e buon divertimento!

Italian Opera and The Great Enrico Caruso

The art of opera originated in Italy in the 1600’s, which

was its Baroque period. The word opera is actually the

shortened term for “opera in music”, a work set to music.

The first opera of which music has survived, Euridice, was

performed in 1600.

However, it was the more ambitious, dramatic and opu-

lent work of Claudio Monteverdi, several years later, that

brought out the virtuosity of the singers and served as a

model for the operatic composers to follow. Among the

most prominent of these composers were Domenico Gabrielli

and Giovanni Bononcini, in the 17th century and, in the 19th

century, Gioacchino Rossini (who initiated the Romantic

period in the early part of the century), Vincenzo Bellini,

Gaetano Donizetti and Giuseppe Verdi (who actually trans-

formed the nature of operatic writing).

(L’Arena di Verona)

The long list of Italians who continued to distinguish

themselves in this most significant medium of musical, liter-

ary, artistic and dramatic expression includes Giacomo Puccini,

Ruggiero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni.

In the realm of opera the great tenor Enrico Caruso’s

sovereignty is undisputable. His life and career began in a

humble environment of Naples, Italy, but as a young boy

Caruso’s extraordinary voice drew the attention of tutors

and supporters who helped pave his way to world renown.

Caruso’s career flourished and he became the star of

the Metropolitan Opera of New York, where he presented

the greatest number of performances of his career. It can

easily be said that Italian opera and the work of the great

Enrico Caruso remain among the most vivid examples of the

contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to culture

and world civilization.

Official Proclamation from the

Governor of the State of New York

Proclamation

Whereas, the Empire State proudly salutes the contri-

butions of our Italian community of friends, neighbors and

fellow citizens who have played a vital role in introducing

and sharing with the world a long and distinguished tradi-

tion of musical excellence; in recognition of one of the great-

est artists of Italy, this year’s chosen theme for Italian Heri-

tage and Culture Month in New York State is “Italian Opera

- Celebrating the Centennial of Enrico Caruso’s American

Debut”; and

Whereas, opera had its birth in Italy in the 1600’s and

quickly spread beyond the Italian peninsula, today enjoyed

globally by music lovers of all backgrounds and especially

appreciated for its colorful sets, rich costumes, drama and

passion blended into a supreme musical and performing arts

medium; opera’s melodies performed as solos, duets and

chorus arias, are beloved by the public and encompass the

senses through singing, instrumental backgrounds, inter-

ludes, and dancing – all of which add to an imaginative and

artistic portrayal that captures and delights audiences; and

Whereas, opera was first introduced to the new world

by Italian immigrants and resounded in Little Italy communi-

ties across the United States, embraced as a source of nos-

talgic pleasure and entertainment in the native language;

throughout history, the timelessness of many classic works

have proven that opera is indeed one of the greatest Italian

exports to this country; and

8

Whereas, New York is home to one of the most presti-

gious opera houses in the world, the Metropolitan Opera,

where Italian works have always been the most popular and

well-received productions; each season, the ‘Met’ offers

more operas in Italian than in any other language, its re-

nowned stage drawing the most widely acclaimed Italian

opera singers, some choosing to make their careers exclu-

sively in New York; and

Whereas, Naples, a worldwide center of music, gave us

Enrico Caruso, one of the greatest opera singers ever, who

debuted at the Metropolitan on November 23, 1903 and be-

came the regular opening night performer for the ensuing

seventeen seasons; Enrico Caruso was the Metropolitan’s

top tenor, performing many Italian Opera premiers in the

New York opera house, and during his Metropolitan career,

this legendary singer gave 607 performances in 37 different

operas; and

Whereas, Caruso’s glorious voice is forever immortal-

ized on recordings, providing a legacy for the world and a

standard to which all tenors have been compared; the Great

Caruso was indeed the operatic world’s first star and Italian

Opera could not have had a more perfect interpreter than

this celebrated and enormously talented man who chose to

base his career in the greatest city of the world – New York –

we therefore pay tribute to the brilliant career of Enrico Caruso

and to Italian Opera, a rich and wonderful art form that re-

mains universally loved;

Now, Therefore, I, George E. Pataki, Governor of the State of

New York, do hereby proclaim October 2003 as

Italian Heritage and Culture Month

in the Empire State.

G i v e n under my hand and the

Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol

in the City of Albany this twenty-

fourth day of September in the year

two thousand three.

in churches and made his debut

as a tenor in Naples in 1894. As a young man, he

performed in small theaters throughout Southern

Italy. In 1897 he auditioned for Puccini with an aria

from La Boheme--after which the baffled composer

uttered the celebrated line, "Who sent you

to me? God himself?" Soon

after, Caruso began perform-

ing in the great opera houses

of Italy and by the turn of the

century had already achieved

international fame performing

in Argentina, England, France,

Russia, Spain, Germany and

Austria.

On November 23, 1903,

Caruso made his American

debut in Rigoletto at the Metro-

politan Opera in New York City,

and for the next seventeen

years, he opened each season

at the Metropolitan, appearing in 36 different roles.

While still in his prime, Caruso took violently ill on

Christmas Day, 1920. He returned to Naples and

died there on August 2, 1921.
