Schindler’s List Movie Guided Information Handout
DAY 1
Chapter 1
1:40 CC: September 1939, the German forces defeated the Polish army in two weeks
1:55 CC: Jews were ordered to register all family members and relocate to major cities.
More than 10,000 Jews from the countryside arrive in Krakow daily
Chapter 3
***We meet Oskar Schindler for the first time. Schindler is a wealthy, charismatic
German businessman, and a member of the Nazi party.
11:10 CC: THE JUDENRAT: The Jewish Council comprised of 24 elected Jews
personally responsible for carrying out the orders of the regime in Krakow,
such as drawing up lists for work details, food and housing. A place to lodge
complaints.
***In this scene, A Jewish woman is told she will be shot if she takes off her Jewish
armband. While she is being evicted from her home, Nazis are moving into her home
***Meanwhile, Schindler meets a Jew named Itzhak Stern to manage the finances of his
factory. Schindler is looking to meet with financers to give him the money needed to
open up a factory in town.
Chapter 5
CC: March 20, 1941…Deadline for entering the Ghetto
CC: Edict 44/91 establishes a closed Jewish district south of the Vistula River.
Residency in the walled ghetto is compulsory. All Jews from Krakow and
surrounding areas are forced from their homes and required to crowd into an area
of only 16 square blocks.
***In this scene, a Jewish man is packing to go to the ghetto. Schindler, a Nazi, takes
his apartment. The conditions the man is moving into a much more cramped than his
previous residence.
Chapter 7
***At this point, Schindler gets the money from investors to open an enamel-works
factory, which he names D.E.F. or Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik. His factory makes
ceramic pots and pans for the German military.
The cheapest labor Schindler can get for his factory are Jews that are living in the
ghetto.
***In this scene, Stern now is out in the ghetto recruiting workers for Schindler’s
company. Jews need to tell the SS their professions. Jews with White Collar jobs are
viewed as worthless and taken away. Stern tries to pass as many Jews off as
ESSENTIAL WORKERS
***Schindler is an excellent politician and he has many connections with German
generals. He sends them samples of his pots and pans along with household items and
foods in order to gain their favor and keep good connections with the powerful men.
Chapter 9
***In this scene, you meet Schindler’s wife, Emily Schindler. During dinner, he tells her
he has goals of making money and becoming rich one day. He tells her the ticket to
making him rich is the war. When she asks to stay in Krakow with him, he has her
return to their hometown in Germany instead.
?How does the one-armed machinist make Schindler feel during their conversation?

Chapter 10

DAY 2
Untersturmfuhrer Amon Goeth: Goeth has the position similar to 2nd Lieutenant, and he will
be in command of the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp.
Chapter 11
***In this section of Chapter 11, we see Oskar Schindler run to the train station to find
Itzak Stern, who forgot his papers and was going to be shipped to a concentration
camp. After Schindler rescues Stern, we see the belongings of those that were sent off
to the concentration camp.
Chapter 12
***Here we meet Untersturmfuhrer (2nd Lieutenant) Amon Goeth, who will be in charge of
the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp. After he surveys the ghetto, he will clear the Jews
from it and force them into concentration camp.

Chapter 13
***In this scene, Goeth explains how the Jews were blamed for the Black Death in
Europe 600 years ago. Jews were forced into Krakow, but they rebuilt their lives and
financially succeeded there. Goeth tells his SS soldiers that 600 years of Jewish
prosperity will end today.
Chapter 14
56:45 CC: Liquidation of the Ghetto, March 13, 1943
Chapter 16
***In this scene, Oskar Schindler goes to the concentration camp to meet Amon Goeth
and other Nazi leaders. At the dinner, Schindler and Goeth have a private conversation
where Schindler makes a deal with Goeth to have his Jewish workers returned to him.
Schindler has to provide food and alcohol for parties along with other goods in return
for the use of workers in his factory.
Chapter 18
***In this scene, Goeth randomly kills Jews because one of them stole a chicken. Pay
attention to whom the boy is. Where did you see him before?
Chapter 19
***In this chapter, Schindler is worried about the reputation his factory is receiving. He
tells Itzak Stern that war, “always brings out the worst in people. Never the good.
Always the bad.”
DAY 3
Chapter 21
***In this chapter, we see the frailty in Amon Goeth’s character. While Goeth and
Schindler talk about control, power and justice, Schindler tries to persuade Goeth to
become a more merciful man. Schindler wants Goeth to believe that power is stronger
than justice. Schindler says that power is when we have every justification to kill and
we don’t. He tries to persuade Goeth to pardon the Jews, and show true power.
What do you think about Amon Goeth in this chapter? How do you think he responded to
Schindler‟s message about power and justice? Why does he miss twice before he shoots the
boy?
Chapter 23
***In this scene, Schindler chooses to kiss a Jewish woman and girl who brought him
cake. Is it right for a Nazi to do that? Will Schindler be punished for this choice?
Chapter 24
***In this scene, we see how the Nazis brought doctors to the camps to examine the
Jews and separate the healthy from the weak.
Chapter 25
***In this scene, many children are taken from the Concentration Camp. Some choose
to go to the depths of filth to survive.
Chapter 26
***In this scene, Schindler chooses to help the Jews standing in claustrophobic
conditions on the trains that are probably sending them to an Extermination Camp.
What does Goeth start to realize in the end of this chapter?
Chapter 27
***In this scene, Schindler is arrested for kissing a Jew

CC: Department D orders Goeth to exhume and incinerate the bodies of more than
10,000 Jews killed at Plaszow and the Krakow Ghetto massacre
?What was happening in the war in April, 1944? Who is winning? What major invasion is
about to happen in Europe?
Chapter 29
***In this chapter, Schindler and Stern make the list of Jews that will work at Schindler’s
new factory in Czechoslovakia
DAY 4
Chapter 30:
***In this chapter, the men and women are put on separate trains, but the men’s train
reaches the factory while the women’s train goes to Auschwitz. An angry Schindler
discovers the re-routing and drives to Auschwitz to make sure the women he paid for
would be sent to his factory.

Chapter 31:
***In this chapter, the Jewish women have their hair cut, since their hair is useful to the
Germans. The women are told they are going to get disinfected, and by now the Jewish
women know they are going to the gas chamber. When the frightened women huddle
together in the gas chamber, cyanide gas does not come out of the shower heads, but
instead water pours out. After the women come out of the showers, they see other non-
Aryans on the other side of a fence also going into a gas chamber.
***Meanwhile, Schindler talks to a German and pays him off in diamonds to get back his
Jewish women. The German gives Schindler only 300 women back, which is not the
entire group that went to Auschwitz.
Chapter 33:
***In this chapter, 300 women’s names are called out, and Schindler makes sure he gets
the children on the train as well.
Chapter 35:
***In this chapter, Schindler lets the Rabbi prepare for Sabbath. When the Jews light the
candles, why do you see color in the flames?
CC: For the seven months it was fully operational, Schindler‟s Brinnlitz Munitions factory
was a model of non-production. During this same time, he spent millions of
Reichmarks to sustain his workers and bribe Reich officials
Chapter 36:
***In this chapter, Schindler finds out he is broke. The Allies’ victory helps Schindler
though. Who do you hear on the radio address?
Chapter 37:
***In this chapter, a ring is made for Schindler before he flees from his factory. Why did
Schindler break down and have regrets about how he used his money? Why did he
think he didn’t do enough for the Jews?
Chapter 38:
***In this chapter, you see the conclusions for many of the characters in Schindler’s
List.
CC: Amon Goeth was arrested while a patient in a sanatorium in Bad Tolz. He was
hanged in Krakow for crimes against humanity.
CC: Oskar Schindler failed at his marriage and several businesses after the war
CC: In 1958, he was declared a righteous person by council of the Yad Vashem in
Jerusalem, and invited to plant a tree in the Avenue of the Righteous. It grows
there still.
