Configure EZProxy: Enable Off-campus Access to New Resources

UCSC Google Documents

 Do not enter free resources.

 Work only on resources that require IP recognition, including trials

 Single domain has been created for every item that has different domain for every title in

the group, e.g. Highwire and Oxford titles have been grouped at the very end of the

EZProxy.Resources file

 More information is available from OCLC:

http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ezproxy/cfg/database.htm

1. Receive notification of new or changing resource

 For Tier 1 and 2 items, wait for requests or notification coming into

ejournals@library.ucsc.edu (Sue is asking bibliographers who send related emails to

refall/scie-refall to cc also ejournals and to add ejournals to Libproxy listserv. For

Tier 3 items, TS staff will modify file when changing URL domains

2. Check to see if it's already been defined.

 Configuration information and known issues for specific databases:

http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/ezproxy/db/default.htm

(sort by date is helpful for undocumented changes). Try to use the definition found

on this OCLC site. If cannot find the definition, ask Sue to set up the definition after

making a couple of unsuccessful tries.

 EZ Proxy email list is also very helpful for database definitions as well as all sorts of

other issues: http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/ezproxy/list.htm

 It is easiest to connect to the resource through the proxy server and see if the

connection gets dropped (OCA should be part of the URL when testing EZproxy).

Two PCs allow testing (Mike's PC and the PC next to the cataloging phone). Use

personal library card for login. Test all the features of the database (search, browse,

login, etc.). Take note of additional host names. Cruzcat and the e-resources

database often use a PID instead of real URLs for the databases. Note that EZproxy

requires the fully resolved URLs and domains of the databases, not the persistent

identifiers (e.g. PID).

3. Update EZProxy.Resources file

 If it is not defined, record all the different domains used on the site and add them to

the EZProxy.Resources file. Resources are listed alphabetically by title or vendor.

If you are listing under the vendor instead of the database name, adding a comment to

the definition with the database title will make updating and trouble-shooting the

definition easier. It will help to do a quick "Find" within the document to see if part

of the vendor’s holdings has already been defined. Most simple database definition

consists of three lines. See example, below:

Title Academica Sinica

URL http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~tdbproj/handy1/

Domain sinica.edu.tw

o Domain contains the last two segments of the first section of a URL

If this does not work, add DJ and HJ:

o DJ (Domain JavaScript) includes the whole first section of a URL

o HJ (Host JavaScript) is created when URL either changes servers or spans

several servers

Title Academica Sinica

URL http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~tdbproj/handy1/

Domain sinica.edu.tw

DJ sinica.edu.tw

HJ sinica.edu.tw

If additional host names exist, add them as follows (include DJ and HJ if necessary):

Title ACLS History E-Book Project

URL http://www.historyebook.org

Domain historyebook.org

Host name.umdl.umich.edu

Host ets.umdl.umich.edu

Host www.hti.umich.edu

Host hdl.handle.net

Host hdl.lib.umich.edu

Host www.humanitiesebook.org

Host quod.lib.umich.edu

4. To discard all changes made in this session and revert to the previous page, go to

Tools > Revision > History > Revert to this edition

5. Save and republish EZProxy.Resources

 Change the last edited date in the file.

 Click Save > Share > Publish as Web Page > Republish Document

6. Contact IT Request/OCA to request EZProxy reload

 Click Share > Email as Attachment

 Select Send published link tab

 To: help@ucsc.edu

 Message body: ex., “A new domain or host has been added to EZProxy.Resources;

please reload the page.”

 Contact Frank, Wes or David by phone to request reload if you are unable to wait.

Send.

7. Test new resource via proxy server

 Upon receiving confirmation that page has been loaded, re-start EZproxy and

check to see if the new resource is working.

 If it works, resolve any RT ticket that accompanied the request. If not, return to

step three, making the required changes on the EZProxy.Resources page.
