Cast bronze is a beautiful and durable material, something
BRONZE
that has been appreciated by mankind for several
thousand years. It is particularly effective for figurative
and abstract sculpture, architectural components and key
elements of streetscapes.
Bronze has always been the preferred material for
commemorative plaques and in recent years has been
specified increasingly for more imaginative signing such
as hill top viewpoint panels, in country parks and heritage
trails or inset into paving.
The term bronze covers a whole range of copper-based
alloys. The most useful and attractive are gunmetal
bronze (almost a pinkish shade) and silicon bronze (yellow/
brown). We use silicon bronze for most sculptural pieces
and signage as it combines great strength and good
fluidity when casting.
Depending on complexity, bronzes are cast by traditional
sand casting or by the lost wax/ceramic shell process.
This brochure illustrates the scope of our bronze casting
and also the abilities of the artists and sculptors, modellers
and letterers who have worked with us.

BRONZE
This page illustrates the
diversity of our bronze work
- from plaques to large
public art works. It also
shows a range of patinas
- finishes achieved by
applying different chemicals
at different temperatures for
different periods of time.
Bear in mind that, for every casting, an original
has to be created as a pattern to cast from.
Hardwood, clay, high density foam and rubber
are some of the materials etched and carved to
create the originals for these castings.
Amongst the items of interest are a Flower
Clock for the National Wildflower Centre,
bronze bases for a water sculpture by SBAL, and
one of a large fleet of plaques applied to all the
Scottish lighthouses. The huge planter was an
accurate re-creation of the original, of which
only a tiny fragment survived.
BRONZE
More examples of sculptural and architectural
bronze work. The bronze whale fin seat is one
of a long line at Whitehaven Harbour, each
incorporating a timeline from
the town’s history.
At bottom left is the original clay sculpture, by
Denise Dutton, for the dialect poet Ben Brierly,
commissioned by Oldham MBC.
As Watford fans will know, the large hornet
(top right) is the club’s symbol and is sited in
Watford town centre.
BRONZE Wall and Floor Plaques
Thanks to advances in computer graphics, complex
designs can now be crisply reproduced in bronze. Hand-
carved signs and reliefs, in which we particularly specialise,
reproduce just as well. We can work from your own
artwork or create designs ourselves working from
your brief.
For heritage and town trails, floor-mounted plaques reduce
signage clutter, last for decades and pedestrians provide a
free, if unwitting, cleaning service! Above-ground
plaques can be supplied mounted
vertically, horizontally or on lecterns.
