Joy is a Carousel Ride

Six-year-old Lauren giggles with her dad, Brian, in front of her new carousel. Lauren is an active girl who loves music,

singing and playing with her dolls, but the one thing that always brings her many smiles and laughs is a carousel ride.

This summer, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona granted Lauren’s wish for a carousel of her very own. The

carousel was delivered to Lauren’s Institute for Education (L.I.F.E.), where Lauren attends school. The school, named

after Lauren, is geared toward developmentally disabled children.

Lauren’s mother, Carrie, says that Lauren loves the carousel and asks to ride it every day. And the carousel is not only

putting a smile on Lauren’s face but the faces of all the children who attend L.I.F.E.

OF ARIZONA Message from the CEO

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2008 I am always amazed about the reaction of folks I speak with when I talk

Tim Jeffries follow that question up by asking if someone knows what we do or how

Vice-Chairman to get involved, I don’t hear the same confidence in the responses I get.

Volunteer Spotlight

Ducky for Diane

The Make-A-Wish Foundation would like to show its grat-

itude for the enormous efforts put forth by volunteer Diane

Arment. As a wish ambassador and chair for the Derby

Duck Race committee, Diane provides the Foundation

with an outstanding amount of involvement. From going

on-air to share the Make-A-Wish mission with local

media and all of Arizona, to dressing up in full costume

as “Quacky” at last year’s Derby Duck Race, Diane has

shown the ultimate level of dedication.

“I can’t think of another organization that I’d rather

be involved in,” Diane says. “I’ve made so many new April Warneke (right) from 3TV interviews Diane (left) at the

friends and I look forward to working with them at future Derby Duck Race for “Good Morning! Arizona.”

events.”

After a family member fell critically ill and was granted his wish to go to Walt Disney World in Florida by the Make-

A-Wish Foundation, Diane says she felt it was her privilege to become involved in volunteer work and give back to the

organization that helped her family through rough times. Her cousin’s son is now doing well, and Diane continues to

devote a tremendous amount of her time to the Foundation.

“It has given me a sense of peace in my life and a great feeling that I’m helping those that are in need of help in a way

that I can fit into my lifestyle,” Diane says of her volunteering. “I’m not the richest person in the world, but when I do

my volunteer work, it makes me feel as though I am.”

Awarding-Winning Youth

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona is fortunate

to have an outstanding group of dedicated volunteers.

These volunteers touch the lives of the children we

serve and inspire us with their charitable support. Even

more inspiring is the involvement of youth in our volun-

teer family, like 13-year-old volunteer Alyssa Goya.

Alyssa has been involved with the Make-A-Wish

Foundation for several years and serves as the youngest

member of the Kids For Wish Kids® executive board of

directors. She commits her time to organizing raffles,

collecting sponsorships and leading a team during the

Walk for Wishes® and has succeeded in raising more

than $25,000 to grant the wishes of children with life-

threatening illnesses. Alyssa also received the Kohl’s

Kids Who Care® Scholarship in recognition of her vol-

unteering efforts.

great feeling.”

Alyssa has not only helped raise money to grant wishes, but she has also helped to get other kids involved with volunteer-

ing through the Mountain Trail Make-A-Wish Club, which she founded last summer at her Phoenix middle school.

“I started this group because I wanted other kids to learn about this great organization and to help kids with life-

threatening medical conditions,” Alyssa said.

Crystal's Wish

A shopping spree

wish comes true!

Crystal’s wish

to go on a dream

shopping spree not only

came true but also came com-

plete with many other surprises as

well. When the big day came, Crystal and

her family traveled from Yuma to Scottsdale

and stayed at the hip Hotel Valley Ho, where there

was a big surprise waiting in her room. An avid fan of

the band Fall Out Boy, Crystal was given a Pete Wentz

guitar by the Fender Company and a copy of the group’s

new CD signed by Wentz. From the ecstatic look on Crystal’s

face, it was obvious the guitar alone was a dream come true.

The next day, Crystal and her family were yet again surprised

as a white limo waited for them outside the hotel lobby. After

stopping by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona Derby

Duck Race and officially releasing 20,000 rubber ducks into

the lake, Crystal was ready to shop till she dropped!

Best Buy was the first stop on Crystal’s daylong shop-

ping spree where the entire staff greeted her with smiles,

applause and a welcome poster. A personal shopper

helped her pick out a laptop computer, video games

and headphones before she was whisked away to a

lunch of her favorite food, Chinese, at P.F. Chang’s.

After a bit of re-fueling, Crystal’s shopping spree

ended at Scottsdale Fashion Square where another

personal shopper was there to give her a goodie basket

full of items from some of her favorite stores. Crystal

was able to shop at her favorite places and even received

a make-over complete with full makeup!

At then end of the day, Crystal’s final surprise, a Luis

Vuitton handbag, was given to her by a client of her

personal shopper who she was introduced to earlier

in the day. Crystal was speechless! Her daylong wish

left her with fond memories and a permanent smile

on her face!

Wish Stories

Phoenix International Raceway helps make wishes come true!

Our friends at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) take

pride in their affiliation with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

PIR offers children facing life-threatening medical conditions

the opportunity to take part in the NASCAR experience. Kids

travel to PIR from across Arizona and around the country

to meet professional drivers and popular personalities from

the sport.

The guest services personnel at PIR work with Make-A-

Wish representatives to set up events where wish kids and

their families are treated to a special VIP experience. Wish

recipients receive total access to the infield and garage

area where they get to see firsthand everything that most

NASCAR fans can only dream of seeing. The staff at PIR

makes it their top priority to establish a strong connection

with the wish kids and give them a first-rate NASCAR

experience.

In addition to the garage tours, PIR makes it possible for

the children to meet some of the biggest names in racing

and see some of the fastest machines in motorsports. From

Jeff Gordon to Kyle Petty, no driver races past the oppor-

tunity to help make a child’s wish come true. Wish child John R. was thrilled to meet NASCAR driver Kyle Petty.

Phoenix International Raceway has made it their duty to

assist in granting the wishes of many children with life-

threatening medical conditions. From tickets to access

passes that allow the wish kids to see all there is to see, PIR

touches the lives of many families and is a true example of

what it means to be a wish granter!

Birdies Mean Bucks for Charity

The Thunderbirds Charities are once again providing local charities the opportunity to collect

pledges for every birdie made by PGA Tour players at the 2008 FBR Open, and you don’t have

to be a golf lover to get involved. It is estimated that 1,300-1,800 birdies will be made.

(For non-golfers, a birdie equals one under par). The Make-A-Wish Foundation will

receive $1.10 for every $1 donated, and last year’s efforts raised nearly $48,000! In

addition to raising money for charity, you will be eligible for a random drawing

of over 100 fantastic prizes including a chance to win the Grand Prize of a 2008

Buick! You don’t have to be a golf fan to help out with this great cause. Make

a pledge online at www.birdiesforcharityarizona.com, or pick up some pledge

sheets from the Wish House today, and get pledges from family, friends and

coworkers!

Derby Duck Race

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona teamed up with Kiwanis International to host the Derby Duck Race for a

second year, at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. Approximately 20,000 rubber ducks raced for special prizes, including round-

trip airline tickets, a Colorado River rafting trip and a year’s worth of ice cream. It was a fabulous turnout, despite the

September heat wave. Even Darth Vader and a crew of Storm Troopers showed up for the festivities. Participants adopted

rubber ducks to compete in the race, helping the Foundation raise more than $54,000. Kiwanis groups from around the

Valley helped adopt the ducks, with the Scottsdale McCormick and Fountain Hills clubs adopting out the most ducks,

bringing in 550 and 503 duck adoptions respectively. Thank you to everyone who adopted a duck or came out to volunteer

for this event. And a special thank you to our sponsors who made the race possible: Knights Templar and the Jim Click

Automotive Team, media sponsor KMLE Country 108, and presenting sponsor Discover® Financial Services.

(above) The race begins as 20,000 ducks are dumped into Kiwanis Lake. (below) Even kids want to get their hands on a winning duck.
