Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 2
Dear Parents,
Wyatt Edison has always prided itself as a safe school with a high level of respect among
staff and students. This year, we will continue to implement a school-wide positive behavior
support plan which is designed to foster a climate of cooperation, academic excellence,
respect, and safety at Wyatt. Our plan makes use of effective and engaging instructional
strategies, consistent procedures, logical consequences, and positive reinforcement to teach
students the skills and behaviors necessary to succeed.
At Wyatt Edison all students and staff have four basic rights in our Code of Conduct.
1. The right to be safe 3. The right to teach
2. The right to learn 4. The right to be respected
All students will be taught the eight Core Values and the importance they have in life.
1. Wisdom 5. Hope
2. Justice 6. Respect
3. Courage 7. Responsibility
4. Compassion 8. Integrity
During this school year, the students of Wyatt- Edison will learn about our Code of Conduct.
They will be asked to teach you what they know and to discuss it with you. Please spend
some time discussing this with your child. It is especially important that you talk to your
child about key concepts such as: our school mission, our discipline philosophy, the four
rights of the Code of Conduct, the eight Core Values, behavior expectations, and the negative
and positive consequences of their behavioral choices.
This is an excellent opportunity for you and your children to discuss the importance of
cooperation, academic excellence, respect, and safety. With your continued support and
involvement, there is no question that Wyatt-Edison will continue to be a school where
students can excel in a safe, respectful, and cooperative learning environment.
Sincerely,
Dave Trajtenberg Joe Taylor
Principal Academy Director

AN AVERAGE DAY
ATTENDANCE
It is the obligation of the parents/guardians to ensure that students attend school daily
and comply with school attendance rules in order to receive an appropriate education.
School starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. Any student arriving after 8:00 a.m. is considered
tardy. Students who arrive after 8:00 must check in at the Reception Desk to obtain a
tardy slip before going to class.
If your child is going to be absent from school please call the absence line (303-292-5515
ext. 2) before 8:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. A verified absence occurs when the
parent notifies the school in writing or verbally that he student will miss (or has missed)
a day of school. An excused absence will include written documentation from a
medical or religious institution. When absences and/or tardies become excessive,
official documentation will be required. Unexcused absences are all other absences,
including suspensions or expulsions. Truancy is an absence without permission of the
parent/guardian.
The attendance law allows for 10 days total unexcused absences. Violation of the law
may result in the initiation of an Attendance Filing in Denver Juvenile Court.
If your child is absent from school for 10 consecutive days with no prior approval, it is
the principal’s right to withdraw your child from Wyatt-Edison.
ARRIVAL
School starts at 8:00 a.m. Students may enter the building through the playground or
parking lot handicap doors at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast. All other students will enter the
building at 7:50 a.m. and go directly to class. Children may be dropped off at the curb
along Gilpin, Franklin, 36th or 37th ; please do not enter the parking lot. Parents are
welcome to escort students to class between 7:50 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAM
Denver Public Schools provides our breakfast and lunch programs. There is no cost for
breakfast for all students. Lunch for elementary students is $1.45 and $1.70 for Junior
Academy students. Prices are subject to change without notice. Students can pay for
breakfast and lunch each day, or parents can deposit money into their children’s
accounts. Checks must be made out to DPS Food Services with the student’s name
written clearly on the front of the check to ensure that it is credited to the correct
account. We require ALL families to complete a Free & Reduced Lunch application. If
you have questions about the breakfast or lunch programs, please contact the
lunchroom manager at (303) 308-1997. (This is a separate phone line in Wyatt’s kitchen).
Breakfast
Breakfast is served each morning from 7:30 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. Students must be in line
before 7:50 a.m. so that they can eat and get to class on time. Breakfast will not be
served after 7:50 a.m.
Lunch
Lunch is served from 11:20 a.m. – 1:50 p.m. daily. Check with your child's teacher for
specific class lunch times. No food may be taken out of the cafeteria.
UNIFORM POLICY
Students at Wyatt-Edison Charter School are required to wear school uniforms every
day. A policy of required school uniforms has many advantages for students, families,
and the learning community. Schools are places for learning; uniforms eliminate
discussions and competitions about clothing. Uniforms contribute to a positive
learning environment.
Descriptions of Uniforms
Navy blue or kakhi skirts, skorts, jumpers, shorts (walking length), capri pants, or
long pants.
White, navy blue, or light blue collared (polo style) shirts, blouses, or turtlenecks
with short or long sleeves.
Students who earn a free t-shirt by being present on Count Day (Sept 30) will be
allowed to wear the Wyatt branded t-shirt on Fridays.
White T-shirts are allowed under uniform shirts. Colored T-shirts are not permitted.
Plain navy or white sweatshirts or sweaters (without logos or words other than
Wyatt-Edison).
Navy blue or white leggings, tights, or bicycle shorts may be worn under skirts or
jumpers.
Navy blue, khaki, or white socks.
All clothing must fit properly. All shirts must be tucked in. Shoes must be completely
closed in front and back and have non-skid soles. Tennis shoes or sneakers are
preferred, as students attend recess daily and P.E. quarterly. Absolutely no
“Healys” (tennis shoes with wheels in the soles of the shoes) are allowed.
Denim blue jeans, denim blue jean skirts, short-shorts, sweatpants, stirrup pants,
bicycling shorts, leggings and sleeveless tops are not acceptable uniform attire.
Heavy outerwear may be worn when appropriate.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 7
Hats (or other head coverings) may not be worn inside the classroom unless for
medical reasons.
MEDICATION
Medication may be given in school only if times cannot be arranged for all doses to be
given outside of school hours, and may be distributed by the nursing staff only.
If your child must take medications during school hours, please follow this procedure:
For the school to dispense ANY medications, prescribed (by a doctor) OR over the
counter (Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, etc.) a medication authorization form must
be completed and on file in the office. This includes a parent release and a
Physician’s written order.
All medications must be brought by the parent or guardian to the main office in a
pharmacy-labeled container. This must be labeled with the name of the student,
name of drug, strength, dosage, frequency, name of physician, and date of original
prescription. If the medication is liquid, please enclose a measured dispensing tool.
Medications must be left in school. They will not be returned to the student; when it
needs to go home, a parent or guardian must sign out the medication.
Students MAY NOT carry or take any pill, inhaler, etc. in class. The School Nurse or
other designee must administer all medications.
TECHNOLOGY AT WYATT
Wyatt-Edison Charter School is proud of the technology-rich learning environment that
we provide for our children. It is part of our philosophy that students should be
comfortable using computer technology as a method of communication and research.
Computers are provided in each classroom, and there are two computer labs for classes
to use on a weekly basis. We expect that students will learn to use a variety of software
and the internet appropriately. We reserve the right to temporarily suspend a
student’s computer account as the consequence of inappropriate use.
INTERNET USE
All Edison schools are joined with an internal network (The Common) that is shielded
from all outside access. Wyatt maintains a web page on this internal network on which
we reserve the right to use your students’ work and pictures in the same positive
manner as we would present their work on our school bulletin boards.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 8
All Wyatt computers are connected to a high-speed internet access system. Access is
keyed to children’s computer accounts. Your signature on the Internet Use Agreement
(part of the registration packet) allows your child to access many instructional sites on
the internet. At school, this access is supervised and we provide filtering software to
block inappropriate material. However, no filtering system is perfect and part of our
instruction on internet use includes how to “back-out” of an inappropriate site and
inform a teacher. When you and your child sign the internet agreement, you signal
your understanding that while we will make all reasonable efforts to safeguard what
your child sees on the internet, no method is perfect and we assume no liability in this
regard.
PARENT PORTAL
Parents will be able to check students’ grades, homework, and attendance. Computers
are available at the front desk.
STUDENT COMPUTER ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
The computer system is very important to everyone at Wyatt-Edison. Students are
given permission to use computers and the network for educational purposes. Students
are expected to use the system responsibly and lawfully. Use of Wyatt-Edison's
computers is a privilege; this privilege may be taken away at any time.
Privacy
Students will receive an account ID and password. Even though account IDs and
passwords are in place, understand that EdisonLearning officials can access students’
computer files. Anything that is created, stored, sent or received on a computer may be
accessed by EdisonLearning officials.
Forbidden Activities
Material that is not appropriate for school may not be sent by e-mail or to newsgroups.
If a student receives inappropriate material, he or she must tell the teacher immediately.
Students may not use "spoofing" or any other ways to disguise names on e-mail or
newsgroup messages. Students must use their own names on all computer work.
Students may not copy software for use on other computers, nor may they provide
copies of software to other people or change software programming code. If a student
becomes aware of anyone who does any of these things on school computers, he or she
must tell a teacher immediately.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 9
Passwords
Students are responsible for keeping passwords secret. Students are responsible for all
computer activity related to his or her account and password. Students may not use
another person's account and password.
Security
Students may not change or copy a file belonging to another user without that user’s
permission. Students may not use the computer to "snoop" or pry into other people's e-
mail or computer files, or attempt to break into EdisonLearning’s computer network.
Viruses
Computer viruses can cause damage to the school’s computer systems. All computer
users are responsible for making sure viruses are kept out of Wyatt’s computers and
network. All disks must be checked for viruses before they are used.
Security Software
No one may use programs that allow the user to lock parts of a computer without the
technology director's permission.
Other Rules
Do not keep e-mails that are older than sixty days unless directed by a teacher or other
school staff to keep it.
Wyatt-Edison and EdisonLearning are not responsible for material seen on the Internet.
If a student visits a web page that is not appropriate for minors, he or she must click the
BACK button so that page does not show. Then, he or she must immediately tell a
teacher about the mistake so the inappropriate page can be blocked.
All students are required to follow all software licenses and copyrights and all other
state, federal, and international laws governing intellectual property and online
activities.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 10
MEDIA
We expect that the media will be interested in what is happening at our school. If, for
any reason, you do not wish your child to be viewed on television or photographed by
the media, we need to have that information on file in writing. The appropriate release
form was completed at registration; please contact the Data Owner to check or change
the status of your release authorization.
FIELD TRIPS
Classroom teachers will plan occasional field trips for a specific educational purpose.
As the teachers plan field trips, they will send information and permission slips home.
In order to participate, a child must have a Field Trip permission slip completed and
signed by the parent. The teacher will also send a notice home prior to each field trip to
let parents know what is planned. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to
participate, arrangements can be made for the child to remain on school grounds and
participate in academic and enriching activities. Parents are encouraged to join the field
trips whenever possible. Children under the age of 5 may not participate without his or
her parent or guardian.
Teachers sometimes take children to the park or historical sites within walking distance.
Sufficient adult supervision will always be present. If you have any concerns about
such outings, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher or an administrator.
HOMEWORK
We believe that students will benefit from skill reinforcement and enrichment activities,
both at home and in the community. Homework assignments will reflect the needs,
abilities, and interests of students. Every students, regardless of grade level, will have
homework assignments which, includes 20 minutes of reading every night.
If your child is spending what appears to be an unusual amount of time on homework,
or if it seems to be particularly difficult for him/her, please communicate this
information to your child's teacher.
HOMEWORK FOLDERS
Each day, all students will take home a “homework folder.” These purple, two-pocket
folders hold homework and other school information. Please check with your child
every night to see if parent information was sent home, and return the folder to school
each day. Students are given a folder to use for the year. Lost folders can be replaced
for $.25 from the office.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 11
THURSDAY FOLDERS
Each Thursday, Kindergarten through 5th grade students will take home a “Thursday
folder.” These red, inter-office envelopes hold information for parents regarding school
events, parenting resources, and other important information. Please check with your
child every Thursday to see what’s included in the Thursday folder, and return the
folder to school each Friday. Students are given a folder (envelope) to use for the year.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
All students go outside at lunchtime for 15 minutes every day, except when it is raining,
snowing, or the temperature is below 28 degrees. Wyatt-Edison Charter School will
follow Denver Public Schools’ lead in case of snow emergencies. If DPS is closed,
Wyatt-Edison will be closed. If DPS announces a late opening, Wyatt-Edison will open
late. If DPS announces an early closure, Wyatt-Edison will also close early. In the
event of an unscheduled or early closure, after school programs will also be canceled.
MONEY AND VALUABLES
Children should not bring money or valuables to school, except money to buy breakfast
and lunch. If money is required for other reasons such as field trips or library fines,
students and parents will be notified. The school cannot assume responsibility for
money, property or valuables, either lost or taken.
LOST & FOUND
Items of clothing such as jackets, backpacks, boots, raincoats, hats and gloves should be
labeled with the student's name to avoid loss and confusion. Children's lost articles are
kept in the Lost and Found in the lunchroom. Small/valuable items (glasses, jewelry,
etc.) are kept at the reception desk.
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
All classes are dismissed at 3:30 p.m. to specific areas around the building. Classroom
teachers will let parents know where their class’ designated spot is. If older students
are meeting younger siblings, the older sibling will exit the building with his or her
class, then go and pick up the younger sibling. Teachers will wait outside with students
until 3:40. Students who are not picked up by 3:40 will be escorted to the reception area
where they will be allowed to call for their ride.
EARLY DISMISSAL REQUESTS
Please make every effort to adhere to regular dismissal times. If your child needs to be
excused from school before the regular dismissal time on a specific day, the child must
be signed out at the reception desk before he or she will be released from class; only an
authorized adult (at least 18 years old) will be permitted to remove your child from school. This
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 12
will be considered a verified but unexcused absence unless the necessary
documentation is provided. Your child will ONLY be released to those whose name
and phone number you have provided to the school. Please help us extend this
protection to your child by providing the school with names and telephone numbers
of the persons who have (or do not have) your permission to take your child from
school. The authorized adult picking up the student must have a photo ID.
PARKING
The streets around the school have various signs posted about parking. Be aware of the
postings; cars can and will be ticketed. The streets at dismissal time can become
crowded with people in their cars waiting for students. Please do not double-park
and/or leave your car on the street. The parking lot on Gilpin is available for staff and
visitors, but again, please do not leave your car double-parked while you come inside the
building.
AWARDS ASSEMBLIES
Each quarter, awards assemblies are held to honor students in various categories,
including perfect attendance, honor roll, and citizenship. Check with your child’s
teacher for a schedule of quarterly awards assemblies.
AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT
City Wild
City Wild is an experiential program for students in grades 6, 7, & 8. The program
focuses on leadership training, outdoor skills, environmental studies, and service
learning. The cityWILD program includes after school activities, monthly weekend
trips, and extensive summer programming. Activities include team building,
gardening, rock climbing, fly fishing, hiking, skiing, and river rafting. For more
information or to enroll, please call the program director at 303-227-6862.
Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives
Open Door is an after school program that offers children in grades K - 8 help with
homework as well as recreational activities. The program runs from 3:30 – 5:30,
Monday through Thursday at Wyatt. Parents are asked to attend an informational
meeting in the evening of the third Wednesday of each month. The program is free to
Wyatt-Edison students.
Peace Jam
The mission of the PeaceJam Foundation is to create young leaders committed to
positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration
of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 13
PeaceJam is brings young people together with Nobel Peace Laureates to tackle the
toughest issues facing our planet - issues ranging from basic needs, such as access to
water, to basic rights, such as social justice and human security. This program runs 3:30
– 5:30 Monday through Friday at Wyatt and is free to Wyatt-Edison students.
VISITORS
Please feel free to visit your child's classroom. After 8:00, all visitors must stop by the
reception desk and obtain a visitor's pass before going to a classroom. No one is
allowed access to classrooms without a visitor’s badge. Between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m.,
parents are welcome to walk their children to class and to greet the teachers.
Please understand that our awareness of adults who are in the building is a primary
factor in assuring your child(ren)'s safety. All visitors will be required to wear
appropriate identification issued by the reception desk. Thanks for your help in making
our school safe.
VOLUNTEERS
We welcome volunteers in our school. Many parents and community members are
working in the office, library, computer lab, and classrooms. Denver Public Schools
policy mandates that, for the protection of the children, all volunteers who work with
children be screened.
Parents and community members that would like to volunteer in classrooms should
contact the Parent Outreach Coordinator for more details. The Parent Outreach
Coordinator can be reached by calling the school’s main phone number, 303-292-5515.
Parent involvement is crucial to Wyatt-Edison’s educational program. We know that
parents are eager to participate fully as the first and continuing teachers of their
children. Get to know your child’s teacher and let the teacher know how you would
like to help in our school.
FERPA Notification Policy
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students
over 18 years of age ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student's
education records. These rights are:
1. The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of
the day the School receives a request for access.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 14
Parents or eligible students should submit to the School principal [or appropriate
school official] a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect.
The School official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or
eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.
2. The right to request the amendment of the student's education records that the
parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in
violation of the student's privacy rights under FERPA.
Parents or eligible students who wish to ask the School to amend a record should
write the School principal [or appropriate school official], clearly identify the part
of the record they want changed, and specify why it should be changed. If the
School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible
student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and
advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment.
Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the
parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.
3. The right to privacy of personally identifiable information in the student's
education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without
consent.
One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school
officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person
employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support
staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit
personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with
whom the School has outsourced services or functions it would otherwise use its
own employees to perform (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or
therapist); a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a
disciplinary or grievance committee; or a parent, student, or other volunteer
assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks.
A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to
review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional
responsibility.
[Optional] Upon request, the School discloses education records without consent
to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll,
or is already enrolled if the disclosure is for purposes of the student's enrollment
or transfer. [NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 15
attempt to notify the parent or student of the records request unless it states in its
annual notification that it intends to forward records on request.]
4. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning
alleged failures by the School to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The
name and address of the Office that administers FERPA are:
Family Policy Compliance Office
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW

NOTICE OF USE OF PERSONAL HEALTH INFORMATION
This Notice Describes How Medical Information About Your Child May Be Used and
Disclosed and How You Can Get Access To This Information. Please Review It
Carefully.
We understand that information we collect about your child and their health is
personal. Keeping health information of your child private is one our most important
responsibilities. We are committed to protecting their health information and following
all laws about its use. You have the right to discuss with the system’s Privacy Officer
your concerns about how their health information is shared. The law says:
1. We must keep their health information from others who do not need it.
2. You may ask us not to share certain health services information. Sometimes, we may
not be able to agree to your request.
Your child may receive certain services from nurses, therapists, social workers, doctors
or other health care related individuals. They may see, use and share your child’s health
or medical information to determine any plan of treatment, diagnosis, or outcome of
information as described in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or other plan
document. This use may cover such health services your child had before now or may
have later.
We review such health services information and claims to make sure that you get
quality services and that all laws about providing and paying for such health services
are being followed. We may also use the information to remind you about service or to
tell you about treatment alternatives. We also use the information to obtain payments
for such services as a result of the Medicaid program. We must submit information that
identifies you and your child, your child’s diagnosis and the treatment of services
provided to your child for reimbursement by Medicaid.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 16
We may share your health care information with health plans, insurance companies, or
government programs to help get the benefits and so that the School System can be paid
or pay for such health care or medical services.
In most cases, you may see your child’s health information but the request cannot
include psychotherapy notes or information gathered for judicial proceedings. There
may be legal reasons or safety concerns that may limit the amount of information that
you may see. You may ask in writing to receive a copy of your child’s health
information. We may charge a small amount for copying costs.
If you think some of the health information is wrong, you may ask in writing that we
correct or add to it. You may ask that the corrected or new information be sent to others
who have received your child’s health information from us. You may ask us for a list of
where we sent the health information.
You may ask to have the health information sent to others. You will be asked to sign a
separate form, called an authorization form, permitting the health information of your
child to go to them. The authorization form tells us what, where and to whom the
information must be sent. You can stop or limit the amount of information sent any
time by letting us know in writing.
Title I Programs
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended
(ESEA) provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools
with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help
ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.
Title I is designed to help students served by the program to achieve proficiency on
challenging State academic achievement standards. Title I schools with percentages of
students from low-income families of at least 40 percent may use Title I funds, along
with other Federal, State, and local funds, to operate a "school wide program" to
upgrade the instructional program for the whole school. Title I schools with less than
the 40 percent school wide threshold or that choose not to operate a school wide
program offer a "targeted assistance program" in which the school identifies students
who are failing, or most at risk of failing, to meet the State's challenging academic
achievement standards. Targeted assistance schools design, in consultation with
parents, staff, and district staff, an instructional program to meet the needs of those
students. Both school wide and targeted assistance programs must use instructional
strategies based on scientifically based research and implement parental involvement
activities.
Wyatt-Edison Charter School- Parent Handbook 17
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Wyatt-Edison Charter School firmly believes that a key component of a successful
learning environment is active parent participation.
“Active parent participation” means:
Participate in monthly parents meetings
Volunteer for school activities
Assist as a parent classroom volunteer
Assist as a recess parent assistant
Help with fundraising
Join the Parent Advisory Council
We believe that our school community is formed by our families. A parent’s
presence at school energizes children and lifts their self esteem. When education is
made a priority at home, children will excel in school.
STUDENT LEARNING CONFERENCES
The following dates have been scheduled for parent-teacher conferences. Teachers will
make appointments with parents to discuss Student Learning Contracts. Parents are
required to attend these conferences every quarter. Teachers will work to schedule
conferences at times that are convenient to your schedule. If you have more than one
